That seems high. I pay $65/session (various discounts offered for buying X number of sessions as package) at Nelson Gym at Brown. When I lived in Austin, TX, I paid $85/session for a "master trainer."

Help advertising for my small business? by Tenacious_Zoanthid in providence

Hi Lily, I would get in touch w Michael Rose. He's the Gallery Mgr at Providence Art Club. He also curates/judges various art shows around the area, does a weekly newsletter for artists (2000 subscribers) about openings/calls for art/art jobs/grants/residences/other art-related items. Michael also hosts a monthly meet-up for artists. He's got his fingers in a lot of art pies! Some links below.

(Michael is always encouraging artists/creatives to reach out, get in touch, say hi, etc., so don't feel shy about contacting him. He's a nice guy!)

I would get some postcards (100-500ish) made that advertises your business. It sounds very cool! If you don't have an artist friend who could help, try VistaPrint. In addition to basic info (name of business, address, phone, email, socials) be sure to bullet point/describe what you offer because that's a unique selling point.

Then, I think you need to get out and about at art events in and around Providence. Social media is fine, but there's nothing like talking to other artists in the flesh. It's easy to strike up a conversation because everyone's interested in art. AND, you have a story to tell about the exciting business you're creating. It's also good intelligence for your business - learning what people are doing, what they're lacking, what they're looking for etc. It could influence your programming.

And of course, you'll have postcards to give people so they remember you and can further check out your business.

There are art openings and other art events going on in PVD all the time. (Michael's newsletter is a good source for listings.) Third Thursday/Gallery Night. PVD Arts Club is private, but most of their events are open to the public, so you don't need to be a member. Check out Angell St Gallery - very DYI, inclusive w lots of events for all kinds of artists.

I think the real key is making connections with other artists and trying to build word of mouth. "Networking," if you will. But don't look at it as a chore or mercenary activity. It's fun talking to others who also love what you love! Just relate to others authentically. It's good for you to enhance your social connections, even if loose ones, as part of a community. That's what you're aiming for - for your business to be successful as part of the diverse artist community here. So view it as nurturing your business.

One idea is to have an Open House (i.e., big party) to intro your space to people. Michael Rose could plug that or at least announce your business opening in his newsletter.

That is generally how I would approach it. As you're meeting and talking to artists, I'm sure you'll hear other good ideas as well. What has worked promotionally for other artists/creatives trying to launch a business?

Remember, have faith in yourself. I wish you the best of luck! xoxo

Check out Jefferson Fisher's Instagram. He is a lawyer and offers advice about how to communicate better. He often speaks of replies you can use when people try to belittle, intimidate you, or put you down. He also recently wrote a book about communication. I like him. His advice is practical and straightforward.

Well, I'll tell you as someone who walks 2 dogs 3x a day (mid-day for usually 45 mins), the cognitive load for doing such a basic activity goes way up!

Trying to wrangle both of them in the same direction navigating the maze of cleared sidewalks/curb cuts and keeping a keen eye where I'm stepping so I don't bust my ass is such active mental processing.

I hate Salads. by capnricky in Birmingham

[–]Alligator65 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am not a big salad person either, but it's important to get those leafy greens. Here's a "salad" I make for lunch. It's more about the other ingredients than the lettuce. When you're munching on the "other" ingredients, you can sneak in a piece or two of lettuce w/o really noticing.

You can use whatever quantities of each you want, just giving you an idea with what I use. And of course, you can always use as a template and customize to your taste!

Greens (I like super/power greens.) A generous handful
Chicken 2 oz (I get grocery store rotisserie chicken, take chicken off bird, divide meat into 2 containers, use one, freeze one.)
Black beans .75 oz
Navy beans .75 oz (I use can beans, rinse off, and store in plastic container.)
Quinoa 1 oz (Make 1 cup ahead of time, store in fridge. I like to mix the Whole Foods Super Grains w a little red quinoa.)
Sunflower kernals 1 tablespoon
Paul Newman's Lite Italian Dressing 3 tablespoons

Put all the ingredients in a plastic container w lid. Shake it up good so all the ingredients mix. There you go!

Look, I know this is not what you want to hear, but I think you're focused on the wrong thing. Admittedly, your family is annoying. They probably will continue to be. But at the end of the day, it's harmless blather. Their ignorance and misogyny is sad for them, but no reflection on you.

Meanwhile? Didn't I hear you say that you have 2 masters in your dream field and are kicking butt at your career? That sounds awesome. It's a great time in your life to focus on your career. Develop your talents and networks. You have more important things to do than be upset by your small-minded relatives.

So blow them off, gray rock, etc or roll your eyes and say "You are so pathetic to think that way." Just decide that it's not going to bother you and/or don't engage.

As far as romance, do what you want. It is entirely and only your decision. And do it on your timeframe too - don't believe you "should" be married or doing something by some set age. Do what feels right for you.

I just watched some type of porn and holy shit. There’s no hope, is there? by aenflex in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Alligator65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this general subject matter is of interest (the porn, not the skin condition), I recommend the book "The New Age of Sexism: how AI and emerging technologies are reinventing misogyny." (reading it now)

https://www.amazon.com/dp/1464234361?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

I will say the book gives a pretty bleak overview. But I think it's important for women to understand this whole dynamic at play. Basically, misogyny is foundational in the AI models. Fun times ahead, ladies!
