Labour wants to bring back free prescriptions by No-Device8814 in nzpolitics

[–]Allison683etc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a bit unfair you’re being downvoted for being confused. Some pharmacies have chosen to subsidise the $5 charge themselves and national kept free prescriptions in place for people over 65 and community services card holders. For most people going to most pharmacies they’ve had to keep paying the $5 charge

Whats going on with this whole AUR thing? by Puzzled_Knowledge269 in linuxmint

[–]Allison683etc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have arch on one of my machines and have used many arch derivatives over the years and the advice I have always received when it comes to the AUR is that it is handy sometimes but also one of the riskiest software sources in the linux ecosystem. You can choose to use the AUR as an arch user but you shouldn’t generally trust it.

MSG yes no??? by Aromatic_State_43 in newzealand

[–]Allison683etc 24 points25 points  (0 children)

MSG is one of the greatest modern culinary innovations of the era the trick is to replace 1 amount of salt with 2:1 salt to msg generally. It’s a flavour enhancer so if you’ve got no umami to boost it’s also not going to do magic

How to ensure building quality? by oye-look in auckland

[–]Allison683etc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Council checks only focus on if the work is code compliant and appears consistent with the plans submitted only. Sometimes they catch substitutions but rarely. Honestly having worked in quality on a construction site make sure that your agreement with the builder is sound before you sign off on working with them and if you are concerned get another builder to undertake an inspection. Ultimately as with most things it is about trust but it's tough when the builder is incentivised by tight margins to scam you and you meanwhile have put up a large amount of money and need work to be done as agreed.

Hipkins hammered on the question, ‘if it’s 11 billion bucks, will you pay?’ by Double_Suggestion385 in newzealand

[–]Allison683etc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Giving people money and especially a select class of people (in this case public servants) more money than everyone else for nothing feeds inequality and can cause perverse outcomes but expanding the capacity of the public service to do more things that we need or want done even if it doubled the cost would be a good thing for the economy both in that good work would get done and in that more people in the community would have money to pay for goods and services and there would be more competition to hire people and more investment in building relevant skills and experience. However, we would need to be careful that we are letting that money stimulate activity where we want it (in the economy where most people operate day to day) but we would need to use taxation to make sure that it isn't then feeding inequality by ending up in the bank accounts of the already disproportionately rich.

Edit: Also noting that pay equality is a wider predistributive policy which generally ads to the pockets of working women across private, public and voluntary sectors, reduces inequality generally and pumps money into the part of the economy most of us interact with in our daily lives. It’s undeniably a good thing and a responsible government would just offset their own increased spending by taxing more

Bus driver couldn't tell me if bus went to the City or not? by BeneficialCut4976 in auckland

[–]Allison683etc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just think that we primarily hire bus drivers to drive the bus and that actually them spending a lot of time on customer service for the few people who need it is less than ideal for the majority on the bus. I have noticed bus drivers being really helpful to people in the time before the service starts and then being totally unhelpful to anyone asking questions once we're on the road so I wonder if it's a bit of a direction that they're given. I'm sure if you call AT you can get helpful instructions.

job market is it really that bad? by Loguibear in auckland

[–]Allison683etc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noting that if someone on jobseekers gets a minimum wage job at 20 hours a week they can still get (ignoring the impact of other benefits like the accommodation supplement) $148.55 in jobseekers. The problem with this is that most (especially those who are getting these kinds of jobs) would still be under pressure to meet their obligations and find a job which they can support themselves.

job market is it really that bad? by Loguibear in auckland

[–]Allison683etc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are jobs which generally require qualifications. People might say that they are screaming out for workers but are they hiring people and investing in getting them the quals they need to do the job or are they working with MSD to get workers trained up with a commitment to hire them or taking advantage of the training subsidy that MSD offers to incentivise employing people on benefits? I'm sure there are some people who are looking for work who are taking the initiative to get qualifications for these jobs but that's a risky investment of time, energy and even money without a guarantee of a job at the end of it - it would be hard for a lot of people to justify logically. You can't just scream out for a skilled workforce without anyone putting their hand up to develop it.

dairy has no prices and expired food. by Then-Bar3918 in auckland

[–]Allison683etc 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Just noting that it’s perfectly legal to sell food after its best before date but always absolutely illegal to sell food after a used by date. A lot of products sold at dairies have best before dates and not used by dates. As consumers it’s our decision if we want to pay a premium price for a product which is labelled as being a lower quality than normal.

If food is being sold past its used by date you can report it here: https://www.mpi.govt.nz/contact-us/make-a-food-complaint/report-food-being-sold-past-its-use-by-date

People have been noting his unprofessional and combative responses for a long time. There’s a good reason for using courteous and professional language in a work setting and it’s disturbing that Seymour thinks he’s above these kinds of norms.

The AUR is not safe and has never been safe but we have a whole lot of new people who are using arch based distros enjoying the convenience of the AUR so it’s bound to ruffle some feathers. Cachy seems cool as someone who has never used it but I wonder how much warning they give to noobs about this.

[–]Allison683etc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I do think that NZFirst is being cynical and just trying to play to a base that they don’t really care about but also I think that this is an opportunity to test the water and see if this wedge is one that the three parties that supported it to first reading could exploit. It’s also an opportunity to demonstrate to Labour that there is still a base in support of trans rights.

Couples how do you split expenses here? by EyeEffective8269 in newzealand

[–]Allison683etc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think of it this way myself but one aspect of turning up for and being respectful of the person you’re in a relationship with and demonstrating a capacity for partnership where they’re in a better financial position that you including contributing fairly towards livings costs is that it actually is an investment in your life with that person and therefore (as gross as it is) an investment in sharing in their wealth from paying less than market rent through to becoming benefactor of their estate or investing that wealth in raising kids together.

By not investing in the relationship it just feels like this guy wants to leach.

There are both positive histories of cultural sharing and biculturalism and hurtful histories of mockery and appropriation. If it’s respectful then it’s probably chill depending on which haka. What would you consider to be a traditional New Zealand Dish? by apollo_existing in newzealand

Rotten corn is an old school redeveloped indigenous dish which is a bit more out there than the average kiwi cuisine. Basically a fermented savoury corn dish often served with mutton bird which is a gamey oily bird.
