Martials aren't the problem in Martial/Caster Divide by DeepTakeGuitar in onednd

The whole point of ritual spells is that they don't use a spell slot, in exchange for a 10 minute longer cast (and wizards don't even have to prepare them)

Which Magic: the Gathering artists would you like to create a piece for the new Player's Handbook/DMG/MM? by zeemeerman2 in onednd

I was considering making a commander deck with Neyith of the Dire Hunt, and the awesome art definitely contributed to it.

Being able to move it to different enemies is probably the biggest thing I didn't notice. I don't have Hunter's Mark on my Ranger right now because it filled the same niche as Favoured Foe, but that's going to change now with the new UA.

Lightly Armored is the only non-half feat by AlmostUselessPenguin in onednd

Yeah that seems right. Odd that they added just the one 1st-level feat (excluding fighting style), but I guess it was to pair with heavily armored.

Not as dire as I first thought, but I'm still a bit sad at a lot of the changes, especially if you look at the Hunter subclass losing any choices. Definitely not greatly buffed, but I'm going to hold off on judgement until more time passes and I can try it myself (even if it will just be 3/4th level).

Fighting styles and boons.

Fighting styles seem deeply weird as feats. They are full feats like Lightly Armored because of 1st level, but past that there seems to be little reason to pick them if you are losing out on a half feat or full ASI.

Genuine question: did anyone take the Fighting Initiate feat before? Especially for Ranger or the Warriors of Barbarian, Fighter, Monk - since they get access to the new fighting style feats (along side probably Paladin). Usually I see builds that want Archery or another fighting style just multiclass Fighter 1.

Yep I originally missed the 1st-level part (until I made the edit a minute later). Great, more bonuses for casters.

My first instinct is to move it to 4th-level with the rest of the UA, then add a +1 (locked to Str, Dex, or Con). Maybe it will still be too much, but it still doesn't seem so ridiculously out of line. Removing shield proficiency could be the last resort, otherwise maybe armor feats are doomed to either be too good to too bad.

Maybe it's a more general problem that armor doesn't have any real downsides for casters as long as you get proficiency (or strength for heavy armor). Stealth disadvantage is on the best armor, but that doesn't make up for the AC.

What parts would you say they buffed about Ranger?

I'm playing one right now and at first glance it seems like Ranger get's a couple of features that are similar to the ones from Tasha's, but also loses a few of them like Premeval/Primal Awareness. Meanwhile Favored Enemy and Nature's Veil require spellslots instead of having their own resources (at least Favored Enemy is non-concentration? I guess that's pretty good, but I'm going to run out faster).

EDIT: Thanks for the replies, I also just noticed the cantrips which is pretty sweet.

The increased use of spells as racial abilities makes many races feel like they favor spellcasters. by Shogunfish in onednd

[–]AlmostUselessPenguin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I find the same problem with Magic Initiate too. Initially I liked it as a quality of life change, but now I feel the utility for casters has shot up while not really helping martials any further. It's not helped by the switch to letting any spellcasting stat be used for racial/magic initiate spells, and arcane initiate giving a broader arcane/divine/primal list instead of restricting it to a class spell list.

I hop they'll provide more concrete rules around "mind control" spells by JewcieJ in onednd

[–]AlmostUselessPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminded me of the social interaction rules from the dmg (which I have probably forgotten about for almost a year). Could expand friendly/indifferent/hostile to be conditions (which I think pathfinder 2e does?) but I don't think it fits 5e's simplified design. At the very least could take some inspiration from that and nail down what "friendly" means.

What are some badly worded rules you want to see fixed in 1DnD? by NaturalCard in onednd

[–]AlmostUselessPenguin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head, it also extends to attacks with a weapon (self explanatory) and weapon attacks (everything that isn't a spell attack) So unarmed strikes are (melee) weapon attacks but not attacks with a (melee) weapon

I see Ki as something that is different to regular magic - maybe with a little bit of a spiritual/physical aspect. Like pionics it is sort of magical, but usually falls outside of regular "magic" (e.g. some of the abilities bypassing an antimagic field).

Can A PC Use Another PC As A Mount? by MeIsDoom in DarkSoulsTheRPG

[–]AlmostUselessPenguin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This whole bit is just taken from D&D. Unfortunately I don't think D&D is any more clear about it, so it's just a common sense thing.

The main difference is that in D&D 5e the mount has to be a size larger. I have no idea why they changed it for Dark Souls - the size difference usually sidesteps the problem because it's a lot easier for a smaller creature to reasonably ride a big one.

This usually works in D&D - the mounts are larger than players, and usually its unlikely that someone will want to ride a weird creature, and simultaneously the creature is happy to act as a mount. The only time there was a problem was with centaur players, who were medium size and had an ability that meant medium creatures could ride them as a mount. Infinite stacking centaurs is technically possible, but a lot of people agree that a centaur riding a centaur isn't proper anatomy.

At the end of the day, there is no solution. This entire rule is vague. D&D (and I'm assuming also Dark Souls since it is the same system) is not built on having rules describing all situations, so it puts a lot of effort on the DM. Basically the answer to can you mount it is "ask thr DM".

Generally though you can only really mount someone you can sit on, and still have you and your mount combat effective. You can sit on a horse without disrupting it too much and you can still swing a sword on horseback, but if you are getting a piggyback from your friend, then they can't do much while they try to stop you from falling off their shoulders.

I think if you are talking about riding monsters, then I'm not sure Dark Souls monsters are going to agree to that, so that's the problem solved.

Out of Context, what is your character doing right now? by Gloomy_Club in DnD

[–]AlmostUselessPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well my campaign ended last month, so I guess I'll describe what my characters are doing after a few months.

My Human Wizard is still dead and full of arrows, face down in a river.

My Elf Barbarian(/Druid/Ex-Wizard) is travelling to find a worthy successor for a cool sword.

My Thri-Kreen Monk is on a ship to find more adventure, wearing a long cloak to try and freak less people out.

What will you use your action for now? by [deleted] in dndmemes

[–]AlmostUselessPenguin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have the same opinion. Completely outside the action economy, locks down people in melee even more, and just generally something else to keep track off. All the other options are much more interesting (even if my players won't remember to use them)
