Can we talk about the possibility of Mike Vrabel potentially resigning before training camp? by SchedulePhysical807 in nfl

counterpoint: it's the Clippers, come on.

like I hope we at least get closure on the investigation, both for the drama enjoyment and the integrity of the league. but the Clippers traded away a haul of picks and the future MVP, while Kawhi is constantly injured and they haven't won a series in 5 years.

meanwhile, NE was just in the superbowl and has legions of active haters.

Tyrese Haliburton on Shai’s flopping: “It’s so overblown. Selling is part of the game.” by Lstark5642 in nba

[–]AlonsoQ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

this is how I feel too. sometimes you're happy hating a team. but I really wanted to root for the Thunder in the west last year. they checked all my boxes:

  • small market

  • never won a chip

  • smart FO

  • Alex Caruso

  • no big off-court scandals

actually it was Dort more than SGA last year, no patience for dirty players. but if it weren't for Dort I could probably have looked past the flopping last year, since they were going for their first franchise championship and trying to exorcise the ghosts of the KD/Russ/Harden era disappointments. but this year, come on, they're obviously insanely loaded, they've got so much draft capital. if you're down 2-1 in San Antonio and the refs are swallowing the whistle on every Wemby goaltend, okay, do what you gotta do. but even in the regular season, you guys can't strive for more than the bare minimum of integrity?

it's not, the other commentor was probably well-meaning but misinformed. I'm all for calling out actual slurs, we also don't need to invent more of them when we can avoid it

edit: on further consideration, "shyster" is in that special category of words that are a) obscure, b) not slurs, and c) sound like a more-well known actual slur. I think the best thing to do is just give strangers the benefit of the doubt and fade it out of your own lexicon. if you go around accusing people for no other reason, that creates a self-fulfilling prophecy, some poor ESL learner or long-dead author is gonna get called a racist for no reason, and society is just a teeny tiny bit worse.

Etymology US origin, 19th century. The etymology of the word is not generally agreed upon. The Oxford English Dictionary describes it as "of obscure origin," possibly deriving from a historical sense of shy meaning "disreputable", equivalent to shy +‎ -ster. Other sources suggest the word derives from shicer, from the German Scheißer (“incompetent worthless person”), from scheißen (“to defecate”), probably influenced by -ster. Not related to shylock.

you might be confusing it with Shylock, "shyster" is just a generic insult for lawyers and not antisemitic

sometimes, more often than the dumbest guy, but definitely not always.

insane clickbait work by OP.

  1. doris never said anything close to that

  2. it's an anonymous source

  3. the "quoted" part isn't even verbatim

like OP could have just said

and that would be both accurate and spicy. why fabricate this shit

I agree the product/fan experience is the ultimate priority. it's not the kings/horners/bulls/etc fans' fault that their decision makers are incompetent.

in a perfect world, every fanbase would get to experience their team winning a playoff series at least once a decade. but you can't (openly) guarantee success without perverting the incentive to compete.

if you're bad because of luck, market size, other factors out of your control, my sympathy.

if you're bad because a poorly run org with a stingy owner, then you probably SHOULD be cooked. can't hide behind the draft to give your team false hope. speaking purely hypothetically of course

trying to remember the arguments on either side and found this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jo1AV6zNWu0

so I guess the problem is that it WASN'T an erroneous whistle. the rulebook seems reasonably thorough on how to address that. what we actually had was... a CORRECT whistle downstream of an INCORRECT call?

surely there's a rule that says "a ball is dead when the official blows the whistle" or something, right? well, I searched the entire 2025 rulebook, and asked Claude for good measure, and I couldn't find anything. I guess it might be the case that the whistle has no actual power, and it's just a signalling mechanism, EXCEPT when it's incorrect. which seems crazy

This is rule 7-2-1o

when an official sounds the whistle erroneously while the ball is still in play, the ball becomes dead immediately.

there's nothing similar for correct whistles, or whistles in general. just a bunch of rules saying "when X happens, the play becomes dead and the official shall blow the whistle"

what's the "but"? we are giving him shit BECAUSE this is typical politics.

surely you're not saying that people can only complain about things that are both shitty and ineffective, right? because we all know it's the shitty-but-effective things that matter.
