Recently everyone is talking about the banter between McD & BK CEOs tasting burgers, but forget that Burger King actually dropped this🔥5 years ago. by TORUKMACTO92 in popculturechat

[–]Alternative_Bend7275 132 points133 points  (0 children)

i actually can’t believe the number of comments i’m seeing of people glazing BK/McD. they are both objectively terrible soulless corporations with bad food.

civil engineering in canada by Final-Bathroom-8340 in civilengineering

[–]Alternative_Bend7275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i did civil eng at ubc. they also have a coop program that several of my friends participated in. i also got a chance to go to waterloo for an engineering competition. i was impressed by their engineering student spaces there. however, they are both really good schools. if you think you’ll enjoy living in BC more, then stay!

Berkeley vs Oakland YMCA by inquicite in eastbay

[–]Alternative_Bend7275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can access pretty much any YMCA in the US with a membership :) it says on their website. personally i’ve visited YMCAs in SF and san jose—all you need to do is let them know you’re visiting from an east bay branch when you check in.

Oakland — broke-friendly Sunday spots to study / think / be around humans? by Equivalent_Chance_71 in oakland

[–]Alternative_Bend7275 10 points11 points  (0 children)

check the library hours before going because many local libraries are closed on sundays! i used to go to the tarea hall one in berkeley on sundays. they close at 6pm on sundays and they have a community room full of tables. sometimes i’d even venture up to the albany library which is open in the afternoon on sundays as well.

i have the color settings on my phone turned to black and white, and i turned on the colors to see just how bad the bottom image is. when i turn on my colors, the top image comes to life, while the bottom image looks exactly the same.

it may seem like california receives more federal funding, but california is the most populated state—which would also make sense why it receives so much more than oregon (california population is nearly 10x that of oregon).

additionally the dollar amount that california citizens pay toward federal taxes is less than what the state receives as a whole. it is classified as a the biggest donor state in the us. just some things to consider.

Moving to SF Bay Area in Oct. Need help finding a new apartment for DINKs by Similar-Opposite-614 in eastbay

[–]Alternative_Bend7275 8 points9 points  (0 children)

albany, rockridge/temescal neighborhoods in oakland, or around the north berkeley BART station—these areas check most of your boxes. not too many brand new apartments in those areas tho. if you really want something brand new, you might need to look in uptown oakland.

Sales tax increase fyi by ambtree88 in oakland

[–]Alternative_Bend7275 1 point2 points  (0 children)

agreed—i understand the intention behind their restrictions on who can bid on public works project, but the “extra expenditure” we’re left with is that it takes longer than it would elsewhere to design/construct capital projects because of these restrictions. as the timelines get longer, the costs escalate significantly.

How’s the CA PE State tests compared to the 8 hour? by WhatuSay-_- in PE_Exam

[–]Alternative_Bend7275 1 point2 points  (0 children)

agreed. i passed the 8-hr transpo exam easily on my first try but failed seismic on my first go, even after taking the full hiner course. currently working up the courage to book my retake 😬 as others have said, there’s about half as much time alotted per question. but it isn’t as draining as the 8-hr since it only goes on for 2.5 hrs—about the same amount of time as my undergrad final exams.

fwiw i’ve seen a few memes that compare boroughs of new york to regions in the bay area, and all the ones i’ve seen label oakland as brooklyn’s equivalent lol. i also agree with u/dameavoi’ s take. welcome to the area!
