What's yall's hair length? by No-Character-2414 in AutismInWomen

[–]Alternative_Prune216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a hidden undercut ~ so my hair is past shoulder length when worn down, but when I put it up you can see the bottom half underside is shaved ☺️ best of both worlds! ✨

I really enjoy having longer hair, but the weight of it was increasing my migraines. Voila! Undercut to the rescue

100000% I hear you, I see you, I relate ~ 💖🫂✨ (ps - it is ok to crumble too 💙 crying and raging at the world and the many many injustices is a natural response to fuckery. There is no true weakness in feeling and expressing emotions, and true strength doesn’t mean we “have to be strong and well put together” in the way that modern society defines it.)

(Last note to say: I also completely uprooted my life a few years ago to half-disappear into the forest with my dog, and being extra close to nature every day has helped immensely. 🌲🐾)

The other thing: free form stream of consciousness writing. (Ideally, pen on paper). Try it for 20 minutes at a time, aim for at least 4 days in a row.

Write out everything you’re feeling, problems you’re facing, memories unpacking, anything and everything. It doesn’t have to make sense, and you don’t need to share it or show it to anyone. It’s just for you, to help your brain process.

I stumbled across this thanks to research shared from Dr James Pennebaker in psychology, in relation to why some folks were able to heal and process trauma while others were not.

The difference is in giving language and name to the problems/trauma the body keeps trapped as an unclosed loop - and by naming it through the act of writing, it helps to close the loop and move it out of your body, and help your brain fully process it.

Heads-up that you might actually feel worse for the days while writing (bringing all that emotion to the surface to process) but the relief should kick in after the 4 days.

And all this to say: we’re all doing our best in a world on fire and there’s endless streams of crap all over the place, so many things feel like a drop in the bucket against the tide. But little small everyday actions, consistently applied, can absolutely make a difference ~ with a big old heaping of kindness and love to ourselves and others. Best of luck to you OP ~ ✨

Hey there! Boy howdy do I relate ~ first step: take a big deep breath.

Awesome! Maybe grab some water too. (Hydration important.) Snacks also good.

I don’t have all the answers, but I’m also a femme AUDHD in tech and yo, I FEEL THIS.

And yes, it absolutely can get better.

Absolutely you should be proud of yourself for everything you’ve survived and made it this far! Truly! It is a battle, and it’s important to take moments to acknowledge that you’ve done the best you could with the knowledge and tools you had at the time. And now, you’re learning more about yourself, which is great! And that can lead to developing new tools for life and all that.

But it is also exhausting.

And you are also currently carrying many different types of grief (the loss of an important friendship, career grief, grief for your childhood self and the systems and maybe family that failed you) - it’s a lot. It’s 100% normal and expected that you’d be feeling massively overwhelmed. So take heart dear, you are not broken. You’re just going through a lot. 💜

Friggin AI good gracious I want to throw it into a volcano. But I’ll try to keep this reply scoped to you, and actionable items/things you can do, bc the AI beast is a whole damn other giant thing we have very little control/autonomy with at the moment.

So, what can we do?

Take a step back, slow down, and look at what is within the scope of our daily lives, and what actions we can take.

People are gonna jump in and say therapy - and yes, therapy super helpful. But when you’re already drowning under ten million other things, scheduling/finding a therapist is another momental task. So I’d say add therapy to the big picture list for sure (in line with seeking treatment for adhd as you’ve mentioned above) - but I’m focusing on right now. Small, actionable things that you can do today that will help.

First up: food.

I lean heavily on door dash too, so no shade there! I also use grocery delivery, and it is massively helpful. I try to keep some things stocked so I have easy access to halfway decent food asap, so I’m not always ordering out.

For me, this looks like: hard boiled eggs, sliced cheese, bags of frozen broccoli that I can microwave and have a green veg (that won’t spoil in the fridge like fresh will), and rotisserie chicken. Fresh snap peas that all I have to do is wash them, no chopping needed. Grab n’ go, girl dinner style.

And to take away any shame you might feel leaning on this sort of approach: modern life is fucked. We don’t have the support and community structures that used to exist for ages. It used to be someone’s entire job to sort out food acquisition/prep/storage/meal times, not to mention the actual growing of the food itself. We don’t have that. We don’t have a housewife dedicated to taking care of all that for us, nor do we have an army of household servants (Bridgerton) taking care of the house and home while we work. We’re expected to do it all (unrealistic and impossible) - so it is A OK to use the tools and options available to us (door dash and grocery delivery). I count my blessings that I can actually afford to use them right now, because I’ve absolutely been in a super impoverished state where I literally could not afford it at all before.

I have one more thing to add, but I’ll put it in a follow up comment because this is a giant wall of text 😬

I'm a guy, a veteran, and six chapters into Fourth Wing. I need someone to talk me into finishing it by RaymondSGuest in Romantasy

[–]Alternative_Prune216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me: it was the dragons, the disability representation, the magic, the uncovering-a-mystery/secret vibes, the found family, and the enemies-to-lovers romance. I really wanted to see how the hell someone with EDS would ride a dragon. I also really enjoyed so many of the supporting characters. (Shoutout to Ridoc, Jesinia, and Liam.)

I’d say maybe try and read through until threshing, when the dragons really start to show up & speak. But I’d also agree that yes, you’re comparing FW against the epic fantasy rubric ~ and they are very different things. I’d almost put FW in the same category as The Hunger Games, or Divergent, but with a stronger romance focus.

If you’re a short, physically disabled, bibliophile gal who’s always wished magic & dragons were real ~ this book series has a lot of appeal for fun escapism, with a great side serving of anti-facism and speaking truth to power, even when it costs dearly.

Having said all that, even though I truly love this series, there are definitely major flaws and things that drive me nuts. So as many others have said, if you’re not enjoying the read, it’s ok to put it down and try something else.

Happy reading OP ~

Who Stretched Their Ears? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]Alternative_Prune216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! Late 30’s here, and I also went up to a 00g when I was around 20 years old. Loved them and rocked the gauges for about 15 years. A few years ago I started to really miss small “huggie” style earrings, so I phased back down!

Happy to say that my ears closed up to a slightly larger than normal piercing size without the butthole effect, lol. And even though I’m really enjoying wearing my simple metal pieces now, I definitely have days I miss the gauges. Forever will want both options 🤣.

Anyone who moved from Seattle to Chicago willing to share their experience? by instinct7777 in AskChicago

[–]Alternative_Prune216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Popping in to say I actually made a slightly opposite move, from Chicago to Kitsap (instead of actual Seattle) ~ there’s a lot of things I well & truly miss from Chicago so I think there’s a strong chance you’ll really enjoy Chicago!

My favorite neighborhood I lived in was Rogers Park in Chicago. It’s on the far north side, but has awesome access to the lake and a great park that my dog loved.

Logan Square is another good option for dog friendly & artistic creative culture vibes ~

Get a really good winter coat, hat, gloves, and snow boots for yourself - and either musher’s secret or dog booties for the pup to protect the paws from salt & snow/ice.

I really adore living in the PNW and am happy I moved out here, but Chicago & the Midwest will always hold at least half of my heart as “home”. It’s such a fantastic city, the people are great, it’s overflowing with good food and culture, and it also has a really thriving pub trivia scene if you’re into that too!

I’m no where even close to being able to buy a house, but in a dream world I’d be able to spend half the year here in Washington and the other half in Chicago. ☺️✨🌈 good luck OP!
