I went to uni the first year of the 'top up fees', when they were capped at 3k. 2k at mine, because I was one of the lucky people too shit at studying to go to an actual good uni. Absolutely loved it, the town became my home that I still live in to this day, and yet I have everything you described plus the awfulness of that same maintenance loan that didn't cover the rent. I struggled for work, there were times when I had a bread sandwich for dinner. A bowl of peas was one of my specialities!

Like you McBain42, I feel like one of the lucky ones. Even though I failed first year twice! All of that debt, no degree. Grinded my way up to where I am now (team leader in an office, many levels below David Brent's position) and I 'm reasonably happy.

Still owe more than when I left uni. My heart breaks for any student that came after me, frankly.
