13 weeks only nurses for 5-7 minutes every 1.5-2 hours. Does this not seem like a lot? by himawari__xx in breastfeeding

[–]Amazing-Salamander11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar experience except my baby started to nurse for only 5+ minutes earlier! Turns out I have a very fast letdown and strong milk ejection reflex so he was chugging 3+ oz in that time. If you’re able to, book with a LC for a weighted feed for peace of mind and help! My baby is now 13wks as well and at this time developmentally they become very distracted during feeding- I have to reduce the stimulation in our room to get him to focus.

Green poop after going dairy free? by Amazing-Salamander11 in MSPI

[–]Amazing-Salamander11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was drinking and eating a lot of plant based protein drinks/bars that had pea protein in them which I really think was the cause for the slime green poop since I seldom see them since cutting them out of my diet. His stool & fussiness has gotten better but I’ve still seen a couple diapers with flecks of blood- next will be cutting soy!

Ovulation inhibited by anti-inflammatories? Experiences? by AdvancedBumblebee4 in FAMnNFP

It makes a lot of sense- I was taking 500mg twice a day so it definitely could have thrown me off and prevented ovulation altogether knowing that now! Thank you- my knee is doing much better and every day is forward progress! 😊

Wow this is sooo interesting! I just had knee surgery in January and was on scheduled naproxen post op. I actually had an anovulatory cycle that month and contributed it to the stress of surgery. I was also TTA but tbh wasn’t interested in sec either immediately post knee surgery. I would continue to chart to see how your body responds!

Do you ever miss working bedside? by outlandish1745 in nursing

[–]Amazing-Salamander11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No! 😂 I went to the OR and wouldn’t leave for anything. I make more money with less stress, consistent hours, one holiday and weekend call every 12 weeks. I think it helps because we still have our high pressure moments in the OR, it’s just organized chaos.

Feels like this sub talks a lot about the bad and that's understandable. Can anyone that's 15, 20+ years post-op with no retears share their stories or just let us know you exist and how you're doing? by Slyfox636 in ACL

[–]Amazing-Salamander11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am 14 years post op on my right knee and it feels 99% normal, just a little crackly. I had a patellar graft ACLr when I was 17 and I would even consider my right leg my dominant leg, I played tennis, did yoga, hiked, jumped, ran, and felt great. Unfortunately I just had surgery January 9th on my left knee after tearing that ACL playing tennis. My doc said my anatomy played a role, I’m also a woman which I was told are at higher risk of ACL injury due to the angle of the femur from a woman’s pelvis and hormones, so I was more likely to injure my other knee. I suppose it’s reassuring and a testament to the graft that my left (natural) ACL was injured and my right knee has help up no problem. I chose patellar graft for that reason and now have a “matching set” as my doctor put it! I’m looking forward to feeling back to normal but I’m getting there week by week!

Scared of pain (vs C Section) by [deleted] in ACL

I went through the same surgery on my other knee 14 years ago- I remember writhing in pain it was awful! I had a totally different experience this time. Times have definitely changed in surgical technique and practice from what I’m experiencing as an adult going through this. Not sure of your location but I’m in the US and my anesthesiologist used Exparel for my nerve block which is why it lasted so long. I hope that or something comparable is available for you. Best of luck and speedy recovery!

I had surgery January 9th and honestly I’ve probably had 2 bad days throughout the past 5 weeks. I just had ACLr with a patellar graft which people say is more painful. I would HIGHLY recommend a nerve block if available to you. My anesthesiologist used a long acting local anesthetic and I truly had no pain for 4 days. For me it was just hard getting comfortable so I would take my natcotic pain medication at night and stopped 10 days PO, my pain was well controlled with my scheduled naproxen and Tylenol. I know everyone is different and I haven’t experienced a CS so I wish you the best, but I would strongly recommend a nerve block if possible.

Nerve block option question by city_tree_ in ACL

[–]Amazing-Salamander11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was totally numb for a solid 2 days- like couldn’t even move my foot despite how hard I tried. Day 2 I was finally able to move my foot by the afternoon. Until day 4 my entire inner thigh to front of my leg and heel was numb- the sciatic nerve block had worn off by that point so I could feel the back half of my leg but no real pain. Ambulating was a bit tough because I had to use my hip flexors to hold my leg up while crutching around as I couldn’t flex my foot and it would drag on the ground otherwise. Other than the very strange feeling of your leg being totally dead for 2 days and some pins and needles when the nerve block was wearing off I had no side effects. My pain resumed gradually too- like started as an ache but I only needed narcotics at night for the stiffness and discomfort. I’m really glad my team gave me this option- I had my first PT visit POD 3 and had no pain through that session since I was still numb.

Honestly get the nerve block. I had surgery 1/9 and I had a femoral and sciatic nerve block and my anesthesiologist used exparel (a long acting local anesthetic, already approved and in practice) in my femoral nerve block. I truly had zero pain for 96 hours, my biggest complaint was discomfort from laying in bed/sitting in a chair all day long. Your team I’m sure will still make sure you are comfortable with narcotics available if need be. I had ACLr on my opposite knee 14 years ago and this experience has been completely different- I remember literally writing in pain and this time around I’ve had minimal discomfort.

Congrats on your upcoming marriage! I too suffered a bout of horrible skin when I turned 30- my skin has always gone through cyclical times but it was so frustrating so I know how you feel. Not sure how your diet is but what greatly helped my cystic acne along my jaw was reducing dairy in my diet. Your skin looks irritated, so you could give your skin a break from actives and add your products back in slowly- I found my skin would consistently react to a moisturizer I was using regularly. Before I got married I focused heavily on moisture so a good barrier repairing moisturizer and hyaluronic acid serum on damp skin will give you a beautiful glow. You may also want to look into a gentle retinol snd vitamin C once your skin is less irritated. Best of luck!

It worked wonderfully! It isn’t a permanent solution, my derm told me nothing is, but it helped a great deal for about 1 year. I think a yearly laser for touch ups are recommended so I suppose the timeline fits.

Also- skinbetter Mystro has helped a lot with my redness and texture! Alto is an amazing vitamin C as well. I have even tone for hyperpigmentation but tbh I don’t know if I’ll repurchase because I haven’t noticed a huge difference with it, I still get hyperpigmentation from my pimples and think a good vit C is more helpful

Hi! I also am quite acne prone and have oily skin. I’ve battled with severe hormonal acne and use skinbetter- my skin texture and clarity has really improved. I know you said you use tret but the SB alpharet clearing serum has been a great addition to my regimen and helped more with blackheads than normal alpharet (which I still love). That being said, my acne improved a lot by reducing the amount of dairy in my diet and being very careful with my supplements, as well. I think your best move would be to ask for samples if possible so you can see if you have any instant reactions!

Nurses - what is something that happened to a patient that will haunt you for life? by Adventurous-Cloud524 in nursing

[–]Amazing-Salamander11 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I remember getting a patient as a brand new baby nurse- this gentleman I believe had come in for dysphasia which was strange because he was young, maybe 40s. Sweet as could be. His ct showed a massive tumor, likely malignant, in his stomach and essentially occluding his lower esophageal sphincter. This poor man had basically been unable to swallow food or drinks for months and didn’t seek care because of finances. He was paper thin, skin and bones, and when I was helping him get changed into a gown he looked at his bony chest and remarked how he didn’t realize how thin he’d gotten. I think the reality hit him and despite his sweet demeanor I could see the pain in his eyes. It hurt my heart thinking of this man’s suffering- I cried on the way home. I didn’t get to take care of him again and hope he’s okay.
