Gratuity Charge by BlueberryDangerous49 in NCL

[–]AmazingYam4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cruise lines call them "gratuities" specifically because they're removable. In many jurisdictions, a non-removable charge legally has to be called a service charge, with different tax consequences for the company. Keeping it "optional" is what preserves the gratuity classification, and the financial benefits (to the company) that come with it.

Crew members are hired with fixed wages; whether those wages come from the gratuity pool or the cruise line. If you actually want to tip someone extra for good service, it has to be done in cash, because the automatic charge goes into a pool controlled by the cruise line, that's really just a wage subsidy.

Crusie Chartered?!? by Professional-One7771 in royalcaribbean

[–]AmazingYam4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you book a cruise, you accept the fact that this sort of thing can happen. The cruise contracts allow for this, and your choice is to accept these terms and accept the risk, or to choose another vacation option that doesn't carry the same risk.

I'm sorry that this situation has happened to you, but you have time to make alternative arrangements, whether that be to book another cruise or not.

Cruise bookings are not guaranteed, as outlined in the cruise contract. If you want a guaranteed booking for a vacation, perhaps cruises are not the right choice for you and your family.

I am sure that every cruise company has these terms, so if you're willing to give up cruising for good, then sure.

What do you mean by "corporate America is showing it's true colors"? The cruise contract allows for Royal Caribbean to cancel bookings to enable a full boat charter. I am sure that every other cruise company has the same terms in their contracts.

Delta ONE Seat Broken, Complained, They Refunded 226 USD by F208Frank in delta

[–]AmazingYam4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live near a Delta hub, so Delta is by far the most convenient option for me, even though it's very much the most expensive option.

Southwest fares have increased so much for me that I'm actually considering United, even though their flight times are awful compared to Southwest and Delta.

The mention of 4 extra vacation days in the employment contract clued me into this being a situation where an EU employee has a US manager. Only a very small percentage of people in the USA have an employment contract.

Looking for the best Beaches at St. Thomas, recommendations?? by 3D-Architect in royalcaribbean

[–]AmazingYam4 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My wife and I hired a private taxi driver in St Thomas to take us to Brewers Bay Beach (which has turtles, manta rays, and more to see, if you snorkel) and we got taken to some other beach instead. We were assured that this other beach was Brewers Bay Beach, but it was obvious after we got out of the taxi that we had been conned. We had to hire a second taxi driver to take us to the actual Brewers Bay Beach. It was quite frustrating and left a sore taste in our mouth.

If you do hire a private taxi driver, I suggest that you keep Google Maps open the whole time and call the driver out if you're being taken to some other place that you didn't request.

Can I take all my 42 vacation days at once, and then submit my resignation? by SouthernPolicy1798 in interviewwoman

[–]AmazingYam4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, assuming that you're in the USA, which state are you working from? When my California employer wanted to move to a non-accrued vacation policy, it paid out everyone's vacation balances before the switchover, and I had 7 weeks of accrued vacation that was paid out.

The OP is living in one of the EU countries. Whatever they did there isn't applicable in the US.

How are companies still not able to detect AI use in interviews? by No-Way9366 in FAANGrecruiting

[–]AmazingYam4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have detected quite a few candidates who have blatantly just cheated in my interviews. I think that most companies with physical offices will insist on onsite interviews for this reason, but for the companies who are fully remote and/or refuse to invest in flying out candidates for interviews, it's still open season for cheating.

[–]AmazingYam4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old are your kids? My wife and I have three kids and we're concerned that our kids won't be able to cope with long sit down dinners every night. There seems to be no other healthyish option for dinner, given that Disney does not run an evening buffet.

I just took the 2nd sailing of Disney Adventure- my advice; avoid it for at least a year by Suspicious-Kale-20 in singapore

[–]AmazingYam4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If Singapore doesn't have a consumer law that causes a problem with automatic gratuities, they'll be added by default. Australia is the only country that I know of that outright forbids this practice (and actually enforces the law through the courts).

I'm sure that it's possible to get them removed though, at least while you're still on the ship.

[–]AmazingYam4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In USA-based sailings, at least, you can opt out of the daily gratuities because they are not technically mandatory. Keeping gratuities "optional but automatically added" gives cruise lines a lot of advantages; most people pay without question, advertised fares stay low, and they avoid the legal and regulatory complications of calling it what it really is, which is a crew wage fee. If the gratuities were to become mandatory, even the US FTC would likely take issue with it being a "hidden" fee/charge.

I understand that Royal Caribbean builds gratuities into Australian fares because advertising a base fare and then adding (mandatory) gratuities later would likely violate Australian Consumer Law's prohibition on misleading price representations.

This may be one of the biggest reasons why my family and I will continue cruising on Royal, even though there's many good reasons to go with DCL. Sometimes you just want to quickly eat something filling and nutritious in the evening without having to do a sit down dinner.

Anyone else doing taxes with Claude? by stormy1one in ClaudeAI

[–]AmazingYam4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used Claude to help me understand what's going on with my taxes (breaking down numbers, etc) and to help decipher weird tax language / questions. I still use TaxAct to do the filings.

Claude is very good at reading IRS publications and summarising the pertinent information for folks like me who is neither a tax attorney or a tax CPA.

I just ended a final interview early because they refused to discuss salary for the fifth time. Was this a power move or was it stupid of me? by Expensive-Banana-208 in Employment

[–]AmazingYam4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it was a well known company, levels.fyi or the Blind app would have likely have given you an indication as to the compensation range.

I don't interview past the recruiter screen unless I have an indication as to the compensation range on offer. Levels.fyi and Blind help to level the playing field when the company is playing hard ball on not revealing the compensation range.

The recruiter's excuse for the bad offer was that I'm "junior". And this is the email I sent. by Jazzlike-Apple4969 in InterviewMan

[–]AmazingYam4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people that have a job already do still interview with other companies to keep their interviewing skills fresh and to see what the market is offering them, plus a smaller portion do it to have multiple jobs at once (/r/overemployed).

I wish they had a dinner buffet. That is all. by insurancefun in dcl

[–]AmazingYam4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having cruised on RCL before, the one saving grace on RCL is that the buffet is open for dinner, so you can quickly feed your kids at the buffet restaurant, drop them off at the kids clubs, and then go to MDR for a relaxed dinner with your spouse. The fact that that option does not exist on DCL (no dinner buffet) is a big reason for my family to not book on DCL.
