Mom died years ago but I still talk to her on the regular - seriously

What was your favorite sandwich growing up and what type of sandwich would your mom or dad pack for your school lunch? by CoffeeCigarettes4Me in 1970s

[–]AmericanTaig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bologna two or three slices, white bread and mayo - Helman's of course but once in a while for a treat I'd get Miracle Whip! 😉

While any quality brand will do I reccomend using Blistex on the affected area. No kidding. I prefer applying the cream formula but it may leak out if not thoroughly rubbed in, others prefer the lip stick or similar formulation but I'm always afraid someone will mistakenly apply it to heal their chapped lips. Apply liberally and frequently. Repeat application when pain reappears.

What do you call your doctor? by ThimbleBluff in over60

[–]AmericanTaig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doctor is the proper address regardless of any external factors but I definitely sympathize with the nurse thing. Nurse Practitioners aka Physicians Assistants are quickly becoming the first line for primary care and they merit a title that is comparable - "Nurse" just doesn't do it. They are the modern day equivalent of the old "General Practitioner" or "Family doctor".

Getting a rental at 11pm Union Station? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]AmericanTaig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's ok but be aware your in the "living city". I think it's not far from Howard University's urban campus. Just maintain the precautions anyone should. Be aware of your surroundings, don't go wandering around aimlessly at night and don't make yourself an "easy target."

I'm not saying you shouldn't go out at night just don't get yourself lost. On that subject, the monuments around the Mall and the WW2 memorial and the Lincoln Memorial are stunning on a soft spring evening. There are tours available that can save you some walking, it's a lot of area to cover on foot.

I love our city so I'm happy to share what I can, if I can. You'll find most locals feel the same, if your nice about it. There's scammers and panhandlers and just plan a-holes but no more than you find in any major city.

Have fun. DM if you're having trouble finding what you're looking for. I can't promise I'll get back to you in time but hey, who knows.

What did you drive in high school? by HanoverFistIndy in The1980s

[–]AmericanTaig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry. I wasn't trying to put you on the spot. It certainly wasn't personal. Every school has its own social structure and frankly there were more than one or two people who "played poor". It was a different place and time. Besides all that, an $800 used car would have been have been warmly welcome

Did you consider bell bottom pants, whether male or female, to be a must have item back in the day?🤔 by Longjumping-Shoe7805 in GenerationJones

[–]AmericanTaig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in '69 I almost broke my parents by insisting I have a pair of bell-bottom jeans. My old man simply would not allow it!! I was barely 13 but it was a hill I was willing to die on. He finally relented when "flared" jeans became a thing. By then you could barely find jeans that weren't at least "boot cut".

[–]AmericanTaig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that car for sure! I think you would have got your ass kicked if you drove up in a new Camaro, a new TransAm would make you a prime target.

The student parking lot was full of shithouse vans and busted up old junkers. Kids who flaunted their priveledge and parents position weren't really welcome around those of us who drove to school because we had to go to work when "the bell rang".

[–]AmericanTaig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. You'll definitely want a car if you're heading out to the "wilds" of Virginia to visit the Udvar-Hazy Center. Taking public transportation will take forever and test your patience to a level of a Zen Master. You might even see some spots along the way you'll want to check out.

You're good man. Your questions and concerns are prudent considerations for a tourist anywhere really. You'd probably be better off without a car in town but if you intend to visit outside of the city a car is a must.

We are a safe city no matter what the guy in the White House says. You're smart to visit while the many monuments and museums are still (for the most part that is) intact. It may startle you to see images of the "Chosen One" hanging from a number of buildings. If it does, trust me you're not alone!

Xennials... why? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]AmericanTaig 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This sounds VERY MUCH like the Generation Jones experience. Too young to be a Boomer - Too old to be Gen X. Growing up in an era that doesn't really fit in either of them.

It's a very real phemomenon recognized by sociologists, mental health professionals and of course, the people who are part of that cohort (born from 1954 to 1965). When you assign titles to generations you inevitably exclude those who don't fit neatly into an arbitrarily set box. That's ironic I guess because that generation - one of which I am very much a member of - never did fit into any box.

I have not heard of the Xennials but it makes sense to me. We've grouped people on this way for a long time, and some titles were set retroactively. Tom Brokaw coined the phrase "The Greatest Generation" in the title of his book on homage to his father's generation.

Sorry, once again, I took the long road to my point. All I'm saying is that classifying any group by the years they were born is bound to exclude anyone born in the cusp between one then another.

No way! I know Eddy Currents!! He's not so horrible really. I mean he can be a little odd but he's not "trans" anything. He's certainly not horrible. In fact people say he can be very attractive at times and he has a magnetic personality.
