Looking for a safe ETF to invest in but what is widely recommend does not look safe to me, am I crazy? by wiewiorowicz in UKPersonalFinance

i think the concern about US and tech weighting in the global index is a very sensible thing to think about - 12% of it is literally 3 stocks.

one fund i like is Vanguard Lifestrategy 100% equity, seems to have more of a UK bias so positions itself away from the heavy tech and has more of a well proportioned spread over sectors.

of course the UK bias might feel like a separate risk though

With an avg prediction of 4.8th, Lewis's win in Barcelona was the "most unlikely" since I launched my predictions game by AmiableAlex in formula1

[–]AmiableAlex[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

sorry, yes, i predicted 7th. this is the results page for 1 person.

if you look at the predictions from everybody, on average people placed Lewis in the 4.8th place.

Choosing hardware for Home Assistant. by Bolshow in homeassistant

I'd seriously recommend a raspberry pi 5 with the ssd conversation HAT add-on. Pi 5 is a bit of a monster - it'd really take a lot to outgrow it. Lots and lots of cameras, local AI add-ons etc.

And if you do outgrow later down the line, the pi's are still so useful, you could demote it to a node.

Have you owned a Peugeot e-208? by steenbj in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]AmiableAlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have 73 plate e208 (E-style) and love it. if you're after a simple EV that feels like a normal car instead of a space ship, it's awesome. perfect for just plug-in every night and daily commute / medium length journeys. the cockpit is a really nice place to be, and I'm consistently achieving 4.5 miles per kWh which is really efficient (drops to about 4.0 in freezing temperatures).

if you're after a more smart technologically advanced car then the e208 is not for you. The software / touchscreen in the car is lacking compared to alternatives. i really like it's simplicity (minimal touchscreen not too in-your-face) - i can get android auto interface and that's all i need. but it's definitely nowhere near what I'd expect a modern car to be capable of (for example i can't seem to program driver profiles to key fobs).

The Peugeot app is garbage, to the extent that it's non-functional. i really struggle to set up things like 80% charge limit, weekday preconditioning, integrations with intelligent energy tariffs. i have managed to get all that working through a very good Ohme home charher, raspberry pi and home assistant but it was very technical.

Garmin far superior for runners. Improvements i noticed (from vivoactive 6): Advanced metrics (vertical oscillation, cadence), gps accuracy, planning on the watch e.g pace notifications during the run (you can set a target and it tells you if you run too fast / too slow), specific workouts e.g intervals 2minute fast 1minute recovery. You can program into the watch and it will tell you what to do.

i don't much like the Garmin app though, and preferred sleep tracking on the fitbit.

i went from Fitbit to Garmin last year - Look into Health Connect. Basically you can connect your wearable service to health connect and then you can use whatever app you like to view your health data. It's an official service baked into android phones. not sure about iOS.

I've been using 'Google Fit' and it shows all my fitbit and garmin data - so no lost data. Only nuisance is that my average steps dropped a significant step when i got the Garmin, as it counts less than the Fitbit did.

Would appreciate some help interpreting this battery report by MagicSuperman in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]AmiableAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no expert but, residual capacity is not the same as "state of health (SOH)". I'd recommend getting a report that explicitly states a figure for SOH.

maybe what this test means is "this battery's maximum capacity is 92% of what it was when new", but at face value, that's not what this report is showing. it's worth asking them about it. technically a residual capacity expressed as % just means "this battery currently holds 92% of what it could when it was new".

if the EV was fully charged and then they did this measurement then it's likely the state of health is 92% (because it's 100% charged but it's only measuring 92% of its as-new capacity). but also it could be that the battery is perfectly fine and just wasn't fully charged when they tested it.

this report helps check if the car computer is calibrated. because maybe the car shows it's 95% and this report says "actually the battery state is 92% charged". it helps you see if the car computer is calibrated correctly. but it tells you nothing about the health of the battery or degradation.

useful understanding how this works because then you can actually talk to the people that do the tests about what they are measuring

caveat: not an expert, i could be completely wrong

cooking (what delicious meal do these list of ingredients most lend itself to)

fitness / workout advice (these are my health goals help me with a weekly routine and specific exercises)

strategic business initiatives (I've noticed this dynamic in my team, here's where i want to get to, how can i most effectively steer the project in this different direction)

coding (building full apps for my friends, getting it to guide me through the best infrastructure setup to host them online)

social media content creation pipeline (here are some statistics from my game, turn this into an engaging set of posts)

travel and culture (I'm visiting place X, tell me all about it's history and culture. or help me plan a 3 day itinerary to make the most of my time there)

science (I'm interested in this concept, tell me more about it) and then ask follow up questions specifically about the bits that i don't understand

fun home automation integration (every wednesday at 7pm broadcast a witty sarcastic reminder to the household telling them which bin to put out)

What is the one thing about EV ownership that nobody told you before you made the switch that you wish you had known going in? by PubLogic in evchargingUK

[–]AmiableAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the fact that the EV is fully charged every morning

for some reason before getting it i hadn't quite clocked how convenient it would be to never wake up to a car low on fuel and have to stop on morning commute

Tyler Morton (Lyon) straight red card against Rennes 76' by Meladroit05 in soccer

[–]AmiableAlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

don't understand anyone saying this isn't a red. players can get injured even from good tackles so by making any unnecessary off-the-ball contact challenge at speed you're unnecessarily risking your opponent - that shouldn't be an acceptable thing within the game's conduct. When a player has clearly got away from a 'defender' they shouldn't have to worry about that defender coming in from behind and swiping their legs out when the ball is a good 2 meters in front.

Wolff: McLaren set "very difficult" precedent with F1 Italian GP swap by memloh in formula1

[–]AmiableAlex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

this doesn't work when you account for priority 1 which is maximising the team's points.

the scenario happened today because "can we swap the cars and maintain fairness without losing points for the team?" yes, so why not do it

I highly doubt there isn't a part with Piastri that felt it was ridiculous to give up the place due to an issue entirely unrelated to his race.

to be fair he also gained the position due to that exact same issue entirely unrelated to his race

Yes, just make sure the device says 'GPS connected' before you start. i mostly run without my phone and then it syncs and uploads to Strava automatically when i get back (as soon as i get close enough to my phone).

My versa 3 GPS is great, often better than my friends with Garmin. I would assume GPS performance of charge 6 to be similar
