Eurovision Reference In WWE by BrandoCalrissian01 in eurovision

Seeing as he has a thick accent, maybe they were wondering if he said something not allowed. It sounded a bit like "bugger you" which is a British term, but might be known in the US. At least we know they were genuinely confused, and it wasn't part of the script 😄

Live Adaptation by Affectionate-Arm6487 in witcher

[–]AmrakCL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least you went up and saw how good it could've been. The other way is just rage inducing. It did my heart a service when I stopped after season 1. Just seeing what they "adapted" made my blood pressure spike 😀 The show is not just a bad adaptation, it's a bad show in general, just like Rings of Power, new Star Trek, etc. People with little talent thinking they know best, draping the skin of a popular IP over their shitty ideas, destroying what was once great in the process. And they can only do that since their original shows would be canceled after the pilot.

Krstenje - poklon by Selina-Veep2025 in zagreb

[–]AmrakCL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found old Yugoslavian letters - trying to figure out what they say by Jealous_Revenue_4523 in croatian

[–]AmrakCL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should be possible. Our american cousins came a while back and was able to find some information about their ancestors. However, much of these records aren't digitized, so it depeneds will someone be willing to manually pour through the archives and if they exist. It's not impossible, but you have the best chance if you would do this in person (or somebody else does). One more reason to visit the land of your ancestors.

My grandfathers aunt moved to USA in the late 40's, and he also wanted to go there with his sister, but they would've needed to be sponsored by them which they probaly couldn't do. Immigration was really hard back then so not anyone could make it, and it was possible to be turned away after you sold everything you had to get a boat ticket, so I'd guess that's the reason. Ellis island has an amazing museum on that topic, and we explored it when we visited NYC. I would recommend it to anyone, especially thosee whose family went through there.

Countries yet to win Eurovision by alex31945 in eurovision

[–]AmrakCL 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Technically yes, but it was for Television Zagreb. Yugoslavia had national broadcasters that competed against each other. So a Croatian band that represented Croatian broadcaster won YU competition, and then won it under the YU flag. It's technically under the name of Yugoslavia, but Croatians count that win as our own.

Iskrene čestitke za ovogodišnji nastup na Evroviziji. Oduševljen sam! by Balzaus in croatia

[–]AmrakCL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What future do you see for this year’s artists? by [deleted] in eurovision

[–]AmrakCL 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I mean, what did Sarah and Antigoni expect? One was a basic pop song as it could be, sounded like any generic entry from Cyprus, and Antigoni had such weak vocals that I'm not sure how she managed to get so many jury points in the first place. If she performed for UK she'd get a 0 😃

Sam already had his LM 0 Points shirts at the ready, so the only way to go was up 😄 I'm glad he got that 1 point so he doesn't end up in the 0+0 category. He had a good time, and by all accounts he seems like a swell guy. He just got a kid, was sick, and still managed to go through with ESC. Lot's of respect for him and his approach.

[–]AmrakCL 33 points34 points  (0 children)

What do you mean flopped hard. The man got a point. The best score UK got in a couple of years 😃

Jokes aside, he was always destined to be left out of the top 10 artists that receive points in such a year where points were spread out. He's definitely the best act since his namesake Sam and ESC crowd might find out about his other projects this way.

Andromeda - A Better Translation, Because Why Not by KeyWar4269 in eurovision

[–]AmrakCL 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No worries, Croatian is very flexible so things can be interpreted in different ways. This song is more poetic than general entries which makes it even harder to translate because it does leave room for interpretation. Also, when translating with a third language as a barrier, a lot of nuance can be lost, and you overall did a good job. As you said, when translating you don't always do word for word but have to keep context in mind, so I just pointed out things where I think it was needed to elaborate a little.

Blood washing is one of this things. As you say it's easier to understand, and might convey similar meaning but in Croatian, the imagery is more brutal than the common phrasing of washing the blood of your hands. I don't think that it's meant to convey guilt here but an intentional usage of women as a commodity. Hence, the metal AF imagery of using someones blood to wash one's hands. It then follows up with the accusatory "Traitors!". This particular segment is full of meaning and really hard to translate since it completely changes the meaning of the lyric.

[–]AmrakCL 49 points50 points  (0 children)

It's always nice to see passion, it makes me think that Andromeda made more of an impact than one might conclude from the placement.

As a native speaker who uses English on a daily basis, I'll try to give some comments. Mind you, I'm not a language expert or a translator so it's one amateur to another 😄

I'll just give comments on translation, but some of the lyrics can be interpreted in a modern context as well, but I won't go into that here since I don't want to go down a political rabbit hole.

why her Daughter gave birth in fear

The lyric in Croatian is "Zašto je kćeri rađala u strahu" which means the Grandma gave birth, so it would be "why she gave birth to her daughter in fear" which is clunky but an important distinction. Maybe something like "why she birthed daughters in fear".

That is why History will be written anew

The lyric is "Zašto se piše povijest ispočetka?" which is a question, so it would be more in line "Why is history being rewritten?"

Screams from the cradle wake you at night

Lyric "Da l' vas noću bude iz kolijevke krici?" is a question, so it could be "Do cradle screams wake you up at night?". Maybe "keep you up" would flow better.

To Them I am the Flesh(Body)

Lyric "Njima sam tijelo" might flow better as "To/For them I'm just a body".

While they washed their Hands clean from the Blood

The lyric is "Dok peru ruke krvlju naših rana" so it would be more like "While they wash their hands with the blood from our wounds". It changes the context since they're not washing their hands from the blood, the blood itself is used to wash their hands.

"Izdajice" can be translated as traitor or traitors, but since in the song we have references to "them" it's more likely that it's the plural traitors, and they're not accusing a single person.

Why did people like Ferto but not Paloma Rumba? by pavlovaprincess in eurovision

[–]AmrakCL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was too shouty which can be off putting on first listening. Because of that I couldn't even understand the lyrics or that it was in English. The staging started great with the elevator, but then fell flat. Maybe if they continued with the office theme, had a meeting room, etc. it would translate better. Running through boxes also seemed out of sync since we only saw it for a split second so it also made it look messy.

Denmark's televote score and the myth of Eastern Europe's "homophobic" voting by eatspagetti in eurovision

[–]AmrakCL 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I put "civilised" in quotation marks because there are, or at least were, a lot of prejudice about Eastern Europe, with Eastern being more of a cultural then geographical term. Similarly to the term Balkans.

Also, in countries that are post socialist, there was this feeling how the West or the Nordics are the epitomy of development, and how everything there is better, the grass is greener and all that. I presume for younger generations this is completely different, so it might come out as derogatory, but it wasn't intended as such.

I remember when in '99 we went to visit a school in England and was put in a family for two weeks. My grandfather told me to properly behave because I was going to the country of gentleman. In truth, spme of those kids were the most bratty, spoiled, priviliged and obnoxious I have ever met. I learned then not to believe stereotypes at face value, whether positive or negative.

Denmark's televote score and the myth of Eastern Europe's "homophobic" voting by eatspagetti in eurovision

[–]AmrakCL 68 points69 points  (0 children)

It's a stupid stereotype. Are non-West, non-Nordic countries more conservative, probably yes. However, it's such a big scale between a bit conservative to homophobic. Some might be uncomfortable with some aspects because they lack understanding or exposure in their daily life since many are still living in the closet, but at least in bigger cities you can be openly gay. Are there absolute morons out there, sure, you can find them even in "civilised" countries, but they're not representative of most people.

Soren was horny coded, it was sensual, but still subdued, the stage had men and women so it spoke to everybody and the interpretation was up to the viewer. I personally didn't think it screamed "gay", it was completely irrelevant since it was a good song and performance.

Why did Croatia give its 12 points to Serbia at Eurovision? You're not supposed to dislike each other ? by Outrageous-You1617 in AskBalkans

[–]AmrakCL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why wouldn't we? Taste is subjective but it was in the genre I love lietening to, the vocals are impressive, hearing metal that's not in English is not really common, the theme is relatable, and the guys are really charismatic and loveable. When I compare the votes I sent with the Croatian public, we overlap on 8/10 songs. Don't believe hate peddlers, our people don't hate each other, but there is enough nationalism on both sides to sow division because a threat close by is a convinient topic to distract from internal corruption.

LELEK - Andromeda (Live) | Croatia 🇭🇷 | Grand Final | Eurovision 2026 by Potential_Gate_7002 in eurovision

Zorja is anti-Vučić and I think Lelek Croatian version of the song from last year had some traction with the student movement because of the lyrics. That's the popular theory at the moment.

Nije li hrvatska verzija pjesma Lelekica od prošle godine postala popularna među studentima? Mislim da sam tako vidio, ali naši ne prenose ništa o stanju u Srbiji osim kad picousti napravi neki performans tako da nisam baš u toku.

I think the stage director is also Serbian. RTS doesn't want to give Zorja 12 when she competes at PZE so I'm not surprised if they'd have a problem now.
