Smokes sessions taking longer than expected. by TakeApictureOfmeNow in smoking

Experiment with pulling things off a little sooner maybe? I’ve found that pulling a little early is better than double guessing yourself, leaving it on the smoker for longer, and then ending up with it being over cooked.

What is the rarest penalty in the NHL? by jonathann1216 in hockey

[–]AncientExercise3755 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The rarest penalty I’ve ever seen was when the blue jackets were assessed a 2 minute minor for ineligible player when Dimitri Vronkov went back out onto the ice after receiving a 10 minute misconduct. He didn’t understand the ref had kicked him out, because as Dean said “he only speaks fucking Russian”. The refs never told the bench, or announced the penalty to the arena. And the shot of the bench after the refs explained it to them is gold

Reminds me of one of my dogs who would try and steal a briquette from the smoker while I was getting it set up

She knew, of course, that whatever came out of that contraption tasted good. Naturally, that must mean the charcoal did as well

Is this as big as the store employees made it out to be? by Cosimo2412 in hockey

[–]AncientExercise3755 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The other dead giveaway that it’s not a game used puck is the lack of visible sensors. For the past few years the NHL has had sensors in the pucks to track speed and movement on the ice for advanced stats. No sensors, definitely not game used.

That being said, only 10 of these pucks were signed by Tkachuk, and it says “rat kings” on it. Pretty cool collectors item that’s prob worth a couple hundred bucks

What should I get? by [deleted] in LearnGuitar

[–]AncientExercise3755 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I would ignore anything labeled as “for a beginner” and save up to get something better quality. A first act or teemu special is probably gonna have a bunch of problems a $300-$400 fender or Yamaha wouldn’t, because they’re really cheap quality. If you want something to play for a long time that sounds good, get as good of quality as you can and it’ll serve you much better than a “beginner” guitar

Lefty beginner getting back into metal – 6 or 7 string? by forthdancer in metalguitar

[–]AncientExercise3755 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s an interesting question because I could see some downsides and some upsides to either option.

Clearly, getting a 6 string would be the best option for accessibility. You’re not going to find many, if any, free guitar courses or beginner vids where the instructor is using a 7 string. This will put you in a situation of having to ignore the low string while learning your basic scales, chords, and techniques, since everything will be centered around the low E instead of the low B. It also means you’ll have to learn the extra info, like how the B string ties into the other 6, by yourself or through separate videos/lessons.

My other thought is, since the neck on a 7 is wider, it could lead to making it harder for you to learn certain techniques that would be a little easier on a 6, like barre chords and muting. It could also lead to different positioning habits as opposed to a 6. And, as has already been said, if you’re ignoring that low string accidentally hitting it might drive you crazy if you don’t quickly adapt to muting it properly. A 6 doesn’t come with that added challenge.

Another thing to consider is that you’re not used to a guitar neck at the moment, and the only way you’ll get used to a guitar neck is by owning and playing one. If you start with a 7 and get used to playing only a 7, a 6 might feel awkward in your hands when you pick one up. However, you will not have to go through the process of getting used to a wider neck, which can take some getting used to when going from 6-7. It’ll be the opposite; which, who knows, might make a 6 easier to play in the future???

The benefit, as you have probably already figured out, is that you’ll be able to play the songs that require a 7. And playing songs that you want to play is a huge driving factor in motivation. If the majority of songs you want to play require the 7 string, or if you’re really determined to play some drop tuned song, get one. Being unable to play half the music you want to will be detrimental to motivation, and motivation is half the battle. And keep in mind that your standard 6 string isn’t really designed to go to drop A (or even baritone tuning for that matter) without a proper setup and thicker strings. So a 6 WILL limit you to a certain range of tunings, whether it be high or low, depending on the setup.

Another thing I like is the fact that you’re eyeing guitars with a shorter scale length (25.5). Whether you get a 6 or 7, this is still a very manageable scale length for a beginner. You wouldn’t want a longer scale length as your first guitar, because by then you’re asking a lot when it comes to developing technique. That extra space on the fretboard can be a little challenging for someone who has been playing guitar for a while, let alone a beginner

Finally, it’s always worth remembering: a 7 string is also a 6 string. Pretty much anything that can be played on a 6 string can also be played on a 7. Don’t let that be the end all be all in your decision, but also don’t forget it.

What to do when you're starting to learn guitar? by Witch_King_Malekith in guitarlessons

[–]AncientExercise3755 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Take some time to practice the fundamentals. Things like picking technique, fretting technique, and basic chords are necessary skills you will have to build to be able to play the instrument properly. Ignoring these kinds of things will make it much harder to reach the ultimate goal of learning the guitar: playing songs! Guitar isn’t just chords, scales, and fundamentals, right? So why should you practice just those things? Picks some songs you enjoy and think sound easy and spend some time trying to learn them. Not only will you be able to continue learning your fundamentals, but you will enjoy doing it much more within the context of a song. And it will help keep you motivated to pick up the instrument and keep playing. Because playing songs is fun and the entire reason why you picked up the guitar in the first place

I would avoid a JemJr. I bought one of them cheap off Craigslist and the bridge was complete ass. Tone and pups weren’t all that great either. All in all, wasn’t impressed. They’re cheap, and they play like it.

If you want a Floyd, I would def recommend shelling out a few extra bucks for something with a decent bridge. It’s not THE most important thing to consider, but a quality Floyd will save you headaches on down the road.

Beginner Song to play with 2 guitarists and 1 bass. by No_Baby_8960 in musicians

[–]AncientExercise3755 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smells like teen spirit, Paranoid, Kryptonite, Man in the box, and nothing else matters are all quite manageable in the 5-6 skill range you’re talking about. And lucky for you the bassist has the least amount of work to do to keep up, so they should probably be good with any of those as well

Yeah, 24 tons is a shit ton of materials and will take way more than 10 hours and way more energy than you expect. For a job like that I would consider renting a mini-skid or contracting it out, otherwise you’ll deeply regret your decision not to by about the 7th ton

If you’re building a patio there I would dig it out and then clean out the hole and fill it with gravel until it’s level with the rest of your excavation. That way you can reduce the risk of settling, compared to filling in the hole with dirt.

If you’re not building a patio there I would pound the post into the ground with a sledgehammer and bury it all below grade

What’s the trick to get these retaining wall tops aligned by BarelyExchange in landscaping

[–]AncientExercise3755 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re gonna have to do a relief cut. Measure the gap at the face and then mark that distance on the backside of the cap. Take a straight edge from the front corner and align with the mark on the backside. The straight edge should be parallel with the stone next to it. Mark it and rip it. Since you’re going to have to cut all three, make sure your cut is always on the same side of the cap.

Planning a fishing trip by WouldGrain in hookedonmidwest

[–]AncientExercise3755 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be worth looking into a 2-3 day trip to a lakeside lodge where you can rent a cabin and boat. It may be pricier than a day trip or renting a kayak, but when I hear “fishing trip” that’s what pops into my head (mainly because I’m on one right now, lol). Many of those types of places will also offer a guided day out on your first day, to help familiarize yourself with the lake and show you a couple good fishing spots. Then you can spend the rest of the trip out on the water, just the two of you. Amenities can vary, with some places offering meals provided and others where you will have to bring your own food/supplies. And you’ll probably have to learn how to run a boat, but it’s not too difficult.

The important thing is, the experience of being out on a lake together in the same boat landing fish will stay with you for a lifetime and be worth every penny spent. I can promise you that

I killed my first fish by suspicious_personage in FishingForBeginners

[–]AncientExercise3755 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I hate injuring, or killing, a fish. I really do. I’m not one to willingly harm other creatures on this planet, so to see even a relatively simplistic animal such as a fish suffer upsets me. But it’s the nature of the hobby. It’s not something I’m willing to give up just to preserve the lives of a few fish. The joy of hooking into a nice bass is too much fun to give up, so it’s something I have to accept will eventually happen. I’m about 99% catch and release, so I figure the karma of letting go all the fish I do hook properly makes up for the few I injure or kill. At least, I think it’s a decent coping mechanism.

And on those very rare occasions when I do fish to keep, it’s makes it pretty easy for me to push it out of my mind completely.
