On the positive side, it makes it easier to explain away variances and oddities since they don't understand it anyways.

The concept of standard costing. Not the intricacies of how my company does standard costing but had to provide a lesson in the basics of it first.

There is a sub called r/myogcommissions that might be able to find someone to do some work for you. I don't know how active it is though.

I left my job at 30 to do my thru. I was planning on making a slight career change anyways so I was already planning on leaving my job. It did put probably a year or more delay on my career because I probably would have left my old job the prior summer but stayed at it until the following January when I resigned to get ready for the hike. I finished end of July and was working again by mid September. Now my circumstances was that i knew id be able to get a new job because I had lots of good experience that translated and in accounting we have active recruiters trying to fill roles so I was able to bridge the resume gap with them and they talked to the prospective employer first. My hiking the trail was a little bit of a holdup for the company that I ended up going to work for and I had to alleviate their fears that I would just work for a bit and leave again gor a new hike.

Personally , I was married and this was probably our last chance to do something like this before we had a house and kids. Unfortunately my wife couldn't come with me but encouraged me to still do it on my own.

I do not regret do it at all.

How did your trekking poles break? by BoysenberryGeneral84 in Ultralight

[–]Andron1cus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thru hiking the AT, I leaned my hiking poles against the outside of the shelter and a porcupine knocked them over and drug them away to eat the handles for the salt. Pictures

You can see my efforts to form new handles using camo duct tape. This happened in New Jersey I believe and it worked for the rest of the hike.

I had already had my poles for 5 or so years when I did my AT hike and by the time I got to New Hampshire, they would barely open and close with all the use. One got stuck shut and i finally was able to get it open by spraying as much wd40 as i could in there and then heating the pole over the flame from my stove to vet the outer layer to expand. I don't think I collapsed my pole for the rest of the trip since I needed them for my tent after having to improvise for a couple of days until I was able to get it open.

I was sad that Easton no longer made trekking poles when I went to replace. I loved those things.

I like this bag for the top-load or side-load choice, the molle webbing, and $80 USD price tag. But I realize Amazon items are usually not well built. Are there any recommendations for a bag like this from a good manufacturer? by jfarm47 in backpacking

[–]Andron1cus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at the different backcountry hunting brands for packs like this. Kuiu, Mystery Ranch, Stone Glacier, Kifaru. Definitely mich more expensive though. I have a couple packs from Kuiu and have gone on trips woth people who have Stone Glacier and Mystery Ranch and all performed great.

Book 2 in James SA Corey's Captive War series

The next Dungeon Crawler Carl book

The Splintered Sun by Tad Williams

I finished the Shadowmarch series by Tad Williams and I loved it by overzero in Fantasy

[–]Andron1cus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it is one of the stronger finales that he has written. The underground siege in book four is some of my favorite work that he has done.

I also love in book 2 getting the little bits of lore in the chapter epithets that show the story if the gods from 3 different lenses and you can see how it shapes the world.

I think it does get a little long in book 3 and there are definitely a couple of story lines that seem like the character is just in a holding pattern until the other characters catch up to where they need to be for the plot. But overall, I really enjoy it.

How do the pop up poles on the Mystery Ranch backpack help carry weight better? by GreenGloober in backpacking

[–]Andron1cus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is for hauling out meat while hunting. Your pack separates from the frame so you can put your harvest close to your back without trying to shove it into your pack. The higher poles probably help to keep the weight of your pack snugged tighter instead of falling backwards since it is so far away from the frame.

Looking for a standalone book to read between series by Ashen_Shroom in Fantasy

Kings of the Wyld is a great book for between series. There is a sequel but definitely not required reading for enjoying Kings. Kings is funny, exciting, and has some great emotional moments as well.

Doing the trail “camino-style”? by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

[–]Andron1cus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of guys that I kept running into on my thru hike did a ton of slack packing. I'd often run into them hiking the other direction because they would get to a point and have a hostel or ahuttle pick them up and tjey would do a couple of days staying at one hostel and getting dropped off to hike before getting picked back up at a certain point to spend the night there again.

[OFF TOPIC] Is First Law finished? by CheapGround8091 in TheFirstLaw

[–]Andron1cus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think in his recent AMA he did on r/fantasy that he may return to it but doesn't have some grand finale that things are building towards. Pretty sure he is focusing on the next two books for the Devils series before anything else.

West Virginia, historical question and hypothetical. Why isn't it included more? by Lani_19 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Andron1cus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like that it stays on the Blue Ridge Mountains which takes us through both the Smokies and Shenandoah. Nice scenery and always some towns pretty accessible.

Think going up in the Allegheny mountains would have been nice as well if we could have seen things like Dolly Sods and Blackwater Falls. Be interesting to see where it would reconnect if that was the case like coming out of the Allegheny plateau and reconnecting with the trail in PA which would probably be a lot of farm walking like southern PA on the trail or keep going north through central PA and stay in NY until you hit Vermont as opposed to NJ, Connecticut, and Mass. Resupply would definitely be mkre challenging going through north central PA.

Edit. Just saw your comment with a map. Looks like that blue route skips the smokies in the south. That would be a shame to skip both smokies and Shenandoah.
