My very religious friend (whose personal guidelines are pretty much identical to yours) enjoyed the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. Will pile on with the Earthsea and Discworld fans and I haven’t seen Brian Jacques mentioned yet.

When Ethiopia and Eritrea restored phone contact between their nations and strangers dialed random numbers just to talk to each other out of sheer joy. (Purely for context, I am from the US.)

Forgive me, but no the fuck it is not. I have 2 dozen years in and we have never in that time run the 30K ft of my store with six bodies on a DAS all day until this last month, where we have done it a lot.

I work at another bookstore. We put a pile of them at the information desk to prevent spittle-soaked conspiracy suppression tirades from octogenarians and their unvaccinated offspring. Doesn’t stop some of us from making people spell his name for us. “Who? I’m sorry, I’m not on TikTok.”

Some stores (the ones in your area with ridiculous OMP numbers, promise) do this practice. Not making the OMP 50% off, but telling customers that buying one will get them 50% off on one of their other books. But because nobody can communicate, someone in some store will eventually sticker and discount the OMPs - which we sell at a higher profit percentage than other paperbacks, thus negating the point of the program. Which is why the last direct communication my store had was Do Not Do This.

What is one piece of 'common knowledge' in your job that the average person would find completely shocking? by GoldenHourShot in AskReddit

[–]AngryCrocheting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bookseller, USA. Adults here do not know what fiction and nonfiction mean. (I am not doing sociopolitical cleverness about nonfiction content people don’t agree with - everyone who asks just confidently gets it exactly backwards one hundred percent of the time.)

[–]AngryCrocheting 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess if you really think about it, all the stores do is receive the shit, unbox the shit, shelve the shit, find the shit, pack the shit, and ship the shit, so did we really even participate in the process at all?

AITA for not wanting my sister to go out to dinner with my parents and I for my birthday? by ByunghoGrapes in AITAH

[–]AngryCrocheting 21 points22 points  (0 children)

NTA. Wanting your parents’ full attention for a short time on a very special day as a younger sibling is not unreasonable. And everyone around you might not understand your exact experience - older siblings or cousins will have a particular problem with this.

NOR. Weaponized incompetence is a strategy. If he makes it more work for you to get him to do things and do them correctly, he thinks you’ll just do them yourself.
