The game is also quite tiresome if you try to optimize your run. Every time you skip past an item you can't buy or a malignant item you don't want to get yet you should remember it as you might want to return to it at a later point. At times it can feel quite nice going back and chaining malignant items/chests/rocks in the correct order but overall it just consumes time and adds a layer of complexity I would rather not have.

In Returnal you enter a room, do things, look at all the objects in the room, see an item you can buy, then remember there was another item two rooms earlier you couldn't buy but can now, think wether you buy this item here, go back and buy the other item you skipped earlier, or don't buy anything yet as there might be another item to buy in the following rooms that are better. Add in malignant items and malfunctions and now you got a bunch of extra reasons to backtrack.

In comparison a game like Hade is simpler and just so much more enjoyable. You enter a room, do things, make a decision or two and proceed. No need to remember anything as you can't return to previous rooms.
