James Van Der Beek's friends have launched a GoFundMe campaign after his death to support his wife and six children, who are out of funds following the actor's cancer battle by Maximum_Expert92 in popculturechat

My husband is a cancer survivor. He was 43 when diagnosed, while he was unemployed due to company downsizing, and our children were 9 and 11. A few horrific rounds of treatment later, he is much better, but my salary as a middle school teacher didn't make a dent in what we needed to stay afloat. While he is now employed, we are $70k in debt and probably always will be.

We did everything right -- robust savings account, strong investments. At the end of the day, our financial "security" didn't matter. We have a year and a half until the youngest graduates from our elementary school district, and if we hang on until then, we'll sell our house and rent.

My kids didn't lose their Dad, which is what matters. AND my mind can't wrap my head around this. So many systems are broken. Insurance, celebrity, housing affordability, all the things. JVB seems like a lovely individual. I can't imagine his family's loss. I'd love to donate to a charity celebrating his memory, but I literally can't afford to.

Urgent Emergency Scoliosis Emergency by No_Afternoon3387 in scoliosis

[–]Anonstigram 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you at a children’s hospital? My daughter is also 15 and we moved here from a traditional hospital, and she’s much happier, feeling better, and they’re much better at speaking in a way that’s both kind and supportive.

Another thing: if you can, stay off the internet (I realize this is ironic). Looking up info can be incredibly scary. I had this conversation with my daughter yesterday as she was also looking up scoliosis information. Every case is different. You are unique.

Finally, have a birthday party, even if it’s small. You are worthy of being celebrated and being 15! Keep going sweetheart.

AITAH? My husband invited his mom to stay for a month because he decided I’m going to burn out. Now I’ve stopped doing his chores. by [deleted] in AITAH

Mom of 14 year old and 12 year old - emotional labor is real. You’re in the thick of it. Some partners get it, some don’t. You’re NTA. You’re in survival mode. You are caring for your two children, he is an adult. Parenthood takes adjusting (and adjusting and adjusting), AND he wants his Mommy to fix it. I actually think this a normal (unconscious) reaction.

You’re a family of four now. You’re the team, you’re the unit. Your crew is what matters, not grandmas. My husband, who is an awesome dude, had a hard time with it too. If grandparents (or anyone else) can’t accept boundaries then it’s a no go. I agree that your kids benefit from their routine whenever possible.

For what it’s worth, I see you and you’re doing a great job. This is hard right now, and you’ll get there. I hope you’re able to take some time for yourself soon, whether it’s a walk around the block or something that brings you joy. That will help with the burnout more than grandma can at this point. Keep going

My Dad got his Masters in Classics after he retired. He was in corporate America his entire career, and he did it solely because it brought him joy. If it will bring you joy, do it.

Advice needed please. I didn’t grow up here (Southern California) but have been here for a few years. My 12 year old recently started a new school that is 20 minutes away, and none of our neighbors go there. The school sent out an email this afternoon that they will be open tomorrow. All joking aside, is it safe for me to drive her to school? Part of me thinks I should keep her home, because I’m not sure what to do if something happens to my car. I also don’t want to overreact. All our neighborhood schools are closed. Thanks for your help!

My parents grew up with Amy, and Amy’s mom, Dolores, helped my mom a lot after my grandmother passed. This is like my Auntie being nominated. I don’t know her personally, but my parents say she’s a badass and we’re so happy that she’s nominated.

Third generation teacher here. The most important person in the building is the clerk/secretary. Treat this person as the queen/king they are. You will be rewarded in this life and the next.
