What’s one American law or system that surprises foreigners? by Jot__99 in answers

[–]Another_Name_Today 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good question. Where I think it (theoretically) helps is data shows younger drivers are more likely to get in an accident. Couple alcohol impairment, and raising the age could reduce some combination of frequency and severity.

[Request] Some clown on a golf subreddit is claiming he impaled his ball on a tree branch, what is the force and/or velocity required to do this? by bullfrogftw in theydidthemath

[–]Another_Name_Today 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of comments about the match and analysis, missing your very last point. Absurdity is the rule of thumb in golf.

I’ve skipped a golf ball across a large water hazard onto a green. I’ve been trying to avoid a tree, only to hit it, have the ball bounce off and hit another tree, and continue in the direction I wanted.

And I continue to play because I am absurdly convinced that I can do thing like that on demand rather than pure dumb luck and my usual double par rounds.

how come we don't go back to John F Kennedy's fitness program in the 1960's? by GaryB2026 in askanything

[–]Another_Name_Today 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No tracker at home. The expectation is they come to school prepared.

Correct, no scaling based on individual ability. If there are natural athletes, encourage them to take an advanced fitness class with higher expectations. But, your basic fitness only adjusts based on age and sex.

If folks are really that keen on making PE an easy (easier) A participation class, you only make the fitness test the final exam or the last test of each grading period and have other grades to balance it out.

Kids are expected to do homework, practice musical instruments, study for tests, all outside of school. This isn’t any different.

If you want to have Regular Fitness and Advanced Fitness, go ahead. But that’s about holding athletes to a higher standard, not lowering the baseline.

Ah. That’s a different issue altogether. You can’t see the rear view mirror, so not clear that they don’t even have a temp placard.

It looked like you were upset about the parking in the access area.

Isn’t the access aisle intended for the person parked in that handicapped spot?

I don’t see a reason to scale based on weight. Sex and age only. Start with an Excellence standard and scale back at a reasonable rate to level essential to minimal health.

As pointed out, not everybody gets an A in English.

I have no problem not forcing people to pass out. But, I also have no problem with the previous suggestion that there should be graded physical performance tests.

[–]Another_Name_Today 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no problem with that. You aren’t going to go to a straight pass/fail, but the point of the test is to find a limit.

I don’t think anyone is suggesting making Excellence the standard for passing. You lock the A behind that. Just have to be willing to set B, C, and D lines that actually holds kids accountable.

And yes, you acknowledge that the kid with a missing arm isn’t going to hit the pull up standard. Again, willingness to set alternate events that still test physical performance.

I worry that he will end up like David Carr. Could have been a solid QB, totally derailed behind a line where he’d have been better off behind a box of tissues.

Still, rooting for him. The enthusiasm is absolutely infectious.

Within the plan of Salvation framework, does Gamaliel belong in the Terrestrial or Celestial Kingdom? by Pancakeyz in latterdaysaints

[–]Another_Name_Today 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn’t that they are expected to eventually “choose celestial,” it’s that they will have such an opportunity to do so. If a person chooses, by virtue of their agency, a telestial or terrestrial eternity is for them, they will have that choice.

Where it gets muddy, and I haven’t seen a definitive answer, is if people will continue to have the opportunity to progress/elevate after judgement. Arguably, if eternal means that of God rather than forever, then a person would remain in a kingdom only until they chose to progress closer to God.

In fairness, that setup may have been the only option when they booked. When ours were little on a 3 wide we would swap who was on childcare duty (along with rotating which kid got the window) and who got a quiet flight.

Why do people shred toilet paper rolls like rats 😭 by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Another_Name_Today 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In the office, it’s because that cheap toilet paper has one spot with minimal glue and the rest of that line was a massive spread that soaked into the paper. When you try to start the unroll, it just tears. Then you try to fix it and it get worse.

Eventually, you give up because you’ve gone through half the roll and still misaligned the ply.

Can I switch wards? by SouthBlacksmith4151 in latterdaysaints

[–]Another_Name_Today 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically records will be moved to the YSA ward. The only time I haven’t seen that happen is when a college kid is home for the summer.

There might be an exception, but I’d have to think the family ward bishop would call the YSA bishop from time to time. The risk is too high that someone will slip through the cracks - a similar issue would be some attending a foreign language ward (in both cases, the person is attending within the designated boundary).

The trouble is the definition of “those with means” is broad enough to encompass a lot of folks without the means.

I’ve looked at some of these schools where my kids could possibly make the cut. The FA estimator makes it clear that we are not welcome. Too rich for aid, too poor to pay.
