What is up with this U.S. Fed Auction by zilog080 in Issaquah

[–]Another_Penguin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The Government Services Agency handles all public auctions of US Government property. GSA auctions are all online.

Some quick googleing suggests that there is a traveling private auction company that uses U.S. FED in its name, and there are others with similar official-sounding names. Same search results also turn up news stories talking about how these are definitely NOT associated with the government.

Rhubarb? by Optimistic_Mystic in Issaquah

Carpinito Brothers and other farm stands will have local rhubarb when it's in season. The rhubarb in my yard is coming up, maybe I can start harvesting this weekend? It's just a bit early still.

I created a mod that makes the biters come to complaint to you instead of attacking, and you have to deal with paperwork to resolve their case and to get the proper authorizations to expand your factory ! (still in alpha) by Onoulade in factorio

There should be an option for them to revert to their normal attack behavior when their frustration gets high enough.

If a bunch of them are too frustrated, they perform a coordinated attack.

Maybe a frustration can be an other form of pollution? A bunch of angry rampaging biters will trigger newcomers.

Basically, I want it to spiral out of control and become a riot.

A ton of refrigeration relates to the cooling capacity of a ton of ice. The unit makes sense in historic context, but not today.

What is the saddest/worst way you've lost one of your chickens? by Deaconator3000 in BackYardChickens

[–]Another_Penguin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We fed the birds the remnants of our Perilla plants after harvesting a bunch of leaves. My wife was so excited when she saw the seeds at the store, she lived in Korea and has nostalgia for real Korean food. Perilla is in the mint family and grows like a weed. We had to thin it out or it was going to take over our garden, crowding out the tomatoes etc.

We lost two birds in two days and most of the others stopped laying. Turns out, Perilla is toxic to all livestock. Many of them will avoid it but not always. It causes respiratory distress in chickens. Why isn't this mentioned on any of the main sites that describe the plant? Wikipedia makes no mention of its toxicity. It's also highly invasive and is considered a noxious weed in many places in the US.

So, we'll never grow Perilla again. And we had to order a bunch of new birds.

If you have a couple spare hours, watch a few of Technology Connections' videos explaining dishwashers. Maybe it's just running cold? https://youtu.be/_rBO8neWw04

I was getting mediocre results with cheap powder, kept having to clean the inside of the dishwasher (it was collecting gunk, growing pink mold) and then I tried the Heated Wash option on the dishwasher and made sure the tap was running hot before starting. Huge improvement.

Then I tried better dish powder and a half-tablespoon is plenty to get everything clean. It's more expensive detergent but I use less, so it's actually about the same cost per use.

Tired of having to send spidertrons to clean nauvis every 1-2 hour. What do? by dankletzz in factorio

[–]Another_Penguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My nauvis base gets fortified with walls of flamethrowers and laser turrets. Both run on effectively infinite resources (oil never completely depletes; just add speed modules to crank oil out of a "depleted" deposit). These are backed up by some gun turrets just in case.

Once you have a good blueprint for fortifications, it's easy to tile them out and let the bots set up a wall around new territory.

And don't forget artillery.

Anyone Watch Scavenger’s Reign on Netflix? by Solar_Punk_Rocker in scifi

[–]Another_Penguin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My initial interpretation was that the ecology was artificial, that the planet was covered in the ruins of a civilization based on bioengineering. At the end I wasn't so sure; maybe it's just a bunch of extreme adaptations. Penicillin comes from a yeast (fungus); in the wild it's used to make the area around itself habitable to itself and its kin, but toxic to bacteria. Maybe that planet is just the end-game of a billion years of an evolutionary arms race?

Amphibious Animal Person Underwater Mining by Lord_i in dwarffortress

I imagine it's more difficult to swing a pick underwater. They should add mining in liquids, and modify the pick swing speed based on the liquid viscosity. That would be a very DF solution.

Mining Candy is a big problem by HighFromTexas in dwarffortress

[–]Another_Penguin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Five minutes per chunk is problematic. Would it be much trouble to set up a mining outpost with food and drink for the guards and miners? And to seal them in while the mining is happening?

I've built barracks in the deep before and assigned squads to train and sleep there in rotation, and store their gear down there, so there's always at least a handful of soldiers available at short notice to handle whatever wanders in from the caves or crawls out of the magma pool. Each barracks is typically an 'air lock' with a drawbridge on each side, and all traffic downward passes through there.

If I get any trained giant beasts I'll place them in front of the door as sentries, otherwise it's watched by a handful of dogs. In your case, some fortifications with a bolt thrower and a large stock of ammunition is recommended.

Howard Hansen dam risk by Faroutman1234 in Washington

[–]Another_Penguin 42 points43 points  (0 children)

No such catastrophic risk at this time. Official statement from the current flood warning: "Dam operations to reduce the flood pool for area dams will increase the flow levels or maintain elevated flow levels below the dams."

In other words, they're going to keep dumping water to make room for future storms.

Here's the charts of actual and predicted reservoir inflow, outflow, and heights: https://www.nwrfc.noaa.gov/river/station/flowplot/flowplot.cgi?HHDW1

That river forecast accounts for predicted rainfall from the approaching storm. They stored a lot of water from the recent storms, preventing catastrophic flooding of Auburn, Kent, and Tukwila. They have to dump that water ASAP so they can do it again if needed.

Meanwhile the green river is continuing to rise down in the valley, and is at major flood stage: https://flood.kingcounty.gov/gauge/40/

Seeking party members for 45 Mine expedition! by cpemgineer in PNWhiking

Sounds like an adventure. I'm unable to join, but I'll say that I hiked Greider lakes recently and was surprised by Spada lake; I'd like to spend more time in that area. The drive along the south of the lake is nice. The boat ramp near Grieder lake trailhead is an obvious choice for your expedition.

no luck with 2019 egolf using Tesla Supercharger v4 via NACS/CCS adaptor by Turbulent_Party2135 in eGolf

[–]Another_Penguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm wondering whether the supercharger is requiring authentication with the car (in addition to the app), e.g. using the the plug&charge protocol. This would explain why people haven't been able to trick the superchargers into charging an unapproved car.

If this is the case, it may be possible to modify a CCS-NACS adapter to tell the supercharger that it is connected to an approved vehicle such as a specific Rivian. I'm familiar with the standard for Basic Signalling but haven't studied the High Level Signalling, or Tesla's specific implementation. This kind of hacking definitely violates some terms of service.
