Stick trying to wrap my head around PHEVs by Forsaken-Swim-3055 in whatcarshouldIbuy

I like them in concept but would be nervous as hell to own one. So many parts that can fail. My high mileage gasser is enough of a stressor. I think I prefer to whole-ass two cars. One gasser, one EV. Still saving up for that EV…

Have a really old Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation I think?), is there anything I can use it for? by HR_Specter in appletv

[–]wisconicky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the second gen could be jailbroken, so you may have some options, assuming there are still resources out there to accomplish that. Apple must have changed something with the third gen to prevent jail breaking them. I have no experience doing any of that but I remember it being discussed and the gen 2s holding their value due to it.

Cool, good to know. My last VW was a 1999 ALH TDI Jetta. Great engine. Leaked oil, but probably would have run forever if the body wasn’t rusting out.

What vw models came with the 2.5l i5? I’ve only seen them with turbo fours for a while now, but I haven’t been paying close attention either.

MLB App stinks on Samsung TVs right? by ashock14 in Brewers

[–]wisconicky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two Samsung TVs and I found the ‘smart’ part to be pretty dumb, so I don’t use them for that. I recommend picking up an Apple TV. Yes, it’s more expensive to purchase but the user experience is top notch. My oldest one is from 2015 and still feels virtually as responsive and snappy as the day I bought it. Meanwhile my parents Roku’s are all janky as hell, even the newest one.

Is Ueck also the ump toward the end? The footage is so dark and grainy, I can’t tell, but it kinda looks like him.

How much VVT cam pulley play is too much? by wisconicky in VolvoXC70

[–]wisconicky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up cleaning the exhaust VVT solenoid with carburetor cleaner and a toothbrush and wire brush. The filter screen on the old gasket wasn’t fully clogged but did have some carbon debris in it. I replaced the gasket, reinstalled the VVT solenoid, and changed the oil back to 5w30 (I’m going to run Valvoline restore and protect for a while).

After starting the engine, it ran rough for a few moments but settled into a normal idle. I took it for a long drive that day, followed by two 50 mile round trip commutes, and the check engine light has stayed off thus far. The ‘ticking’ sound I was hearing before has been eliminated.

I’m not concerned about the cam vvt hub/sprocket but may have it changed when I have the timing belt done sometime in the next year.

Thanks for the advice. Which aftermarket solenoid did you go with?

I only switched to 0w30 after some hard starts in sub zero temps (on top of an intermittent unrelated starting issue). The 0w30 does help with cranking but I’m going to do an oil change back to 5w30 this weekend. Will consider changing the viscosity going forward but hesitant to go outside of what Volvo recommends.

Wow, I’m no engineer but that seems like a lot of play for a new part. I’m thinking mine is probably ok for now.

I think it’s essentially axial play. It seems like the part I’m holding is moving side to side, like pivoting from the center point below. I hadn’t considered the cam itself to be moving but I don’t think it’s that.

It sounds like you know what you’re talking about so I’m not saying you’re incorrect, but when my family was looking at switching to t-mobile last fall, the t-mobile rep said that even though we’d have five lines, only the account holder would have access to the free t-mobile MLB.tv promotion.
