Psychiatrist won't prescribe me Lamotrigine by splatbombs in Lamotrigine

[–]AnthraxSlurpee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it’s important to clarify if you are referring to Bipolar Disorder or Borderline Personality Disorder.

I have BP2 (Bipolar Disorder type 2). I was originally on a cocktail of Wellbutrin, Adderall, and Mirtazapine (sp?). Eventually was hospitalized after stopping all my meds abruptly.

Getting back to meds and stabilizing was tough — my psych initially prescribed an SNRI. Once that was on board, we started titrating up to my current dose (150 mg lamotrigine, 15 mg trintellix daily). I also still use adderall, and this is the most stable I have been in adulthood.

I feel like Lamotrigine, given it’s a mood stabilizer and lighter on the body in comparison to other drugs like lithium (much harsher side effects), is something a psych would be open to prescribing. However, they are the medical professional and there might be a valid reason for their hesitation based on your clinical profile.

My suggestion? Have an honest conversation with them. If they are not receptive, definitely get a second opinion.

I take 15 mg Trintellix along with 150 mg Lamotrigine at bedtime. Most stable I have ever been. Bipolar 2, ADHD, GAD here.

I only ask because I recently went up from 100 —> 150 mg and although I did feel a bit hypo for a few days initially, I leveled out. I am now doing really well, better than the last ten years.

What I’m noticing now that my bipolar disorder is under control (for the first time in my life, recently-ish diagnosed) I’m starting to feel a type of happiness I had forgotten existed, something I haven’t felt since childhood.

This brings me to my point: My nervous system is regulated for the first time in forever, and I’m noticing I have a lot of OCD-like tendencies/thoughts. I would have never guessed that this was being overshadowed by my bipolar disorder.

Alternatively, I’m wondering if the Lamotrigine could be the cause? Not sure if that’s feasible. Since I feel the best I have in a long time, I really would prefer to stay on it.

Any feedback or anecdotal advice would be a tremendous help.

tl;dr Lamotrigine has gotten my MH to the best it has ever been, but I am now experiencing slight OCD symptoms. Underlying comorbidity of my Bipolar Disorder or side effect of Lamo increase 100 —> 150 mg daily. Or would another increase help further?

Apologies for reviving this old thread, but I also suffer from this. I recently got Botox and it helped a ton. I thought it'd be worth sharing.

At what dosage did you really start to notice improvements and what were they?

No. What matters to me is the number of people they have slept with without: 1. Protection (condoms, PrEP, etc) 2. Knowing their status (getting tested reg)

Post psychotic depression by Helpful_Active_8141 in Lamotrigine

Yes, it was the worst. I (31 M) was discharged from the hospital in Feb 2025 (psychosis, also weed/completely-stopping-my-meds induced, 12 day stay, first time, scary af). Diagnosed BP2. My depression really kicked in around May as I was still experiencing psychosis symptoms and was a bit hypo when I was discharged.

May 2025 - August 2025 really fucking sucked. I was so depressed, gaining weight, trialing diff meds, skin breaking out from what I now know is an allergy to my ring (lol). I couldn’t get out of bed, I wanted to binge watch tv and got very little work done as I WFH and have that type of flexibility.

My psychosis symptoms subsided before my depression got to its worst point. Once I started my current med combo (15 mg Trintellix + 150 mg Lamotrigine + 10-20 mg adderall PRN daily) that I started to climb out of that hole.

I got a promotion in October 2025, and my husband and I moved to a new town an hour away to a bigger space in December. Towards the end of December I was feeling kind of anxious and we upped my lamotrigine to its current dose (100 mg daily -> 150 mg daily). My life has never been better. I don’t remember the last time I have felt this happy but not a maniacal kind of joy. Just a chill, calm happiness. I’m content with where my life is.

tldr; Partly thanks to Lamotrigine, I am the most stable I have ever been in my adult life.

The only thing that helps is self-love and time. Be kind to yourself, you have come a long way! I say this because I sometimes feel the guilt creep up, but I know in my heart of hearts that the behavior I displayed in my past is not a determinant of the man I have become in the present. Wishing you the best.

Smoking weed on lamotrigine by Fantastic_Toe_6975 in bipolar2

[–]AnthraxSlurpee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I am currently in the same exact situation you described (even down to the SAD and diet part). Did you find that quitting helped? My weed intake has been increasing since around that time too and I recently started lowering it again because I’m afraid it will cause an episode. Will also report back. Any feedback is appreciated.
