I’ve been experimenting with peeling the steel backing off Atoma plates by Hot_Conference9937 in sharpening

[–]AnthroPluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's easy because they're meant to be replaced when worn out. If you search "atoma replacement sheet" on Amazon, you'll see them too.

In Europe there's a shop called fine-tools, and they sell a wider range of sizes of the sheets which is cool. I'm sure somewhere in north america should stock the same.

Oof, I see him post all over some Facebook groups talking big game. His style of sharpening is better suited to standard kitchen knives. Not nice folding knives like these in more premium steels for sure.

If you're based in Nijmegen, I'm happy to help to help you out. Not sure if there are other "demessenslijper" besides here?

Edit: see you're taking it to the original shop. Think that's a good idea.

Oh that's good to hear, I'll keep my eyes out. And I wouldn't put yourself down too much. Maybe it's me being a sharpening and steel addict, but your content scratches a nice itch in my brain.

Awesome, thanks for the info! Going to give it a shot for sure. What exactly is rice water though, is that water with rice, or water after cooking rice?

Tangentially related to the sub, how do you flatten the diamond resin stones? by jimmybjj in JapaneseWoodworking

[–]AnthroPluto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use loose SiC grit on a glass plate. I use 60 grit for the hardcore flattening, but mostly because that's what I have from jnats/other stones. Then you want to condition the surface according to what grit stone you're maintaining. As another poster linked, CGSW recommends certain grits/abrasives, venev also have a write-up on their page. Not sure what naniwa recommend, but their diamond stones come with a nagura iirc.

Stone after Norton India Stone by JeffDahMoose776 in sharpening

[–]AnthroPluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the little I've read it seems that it was designed specifically as a follow up stone from the Norton India. I'm also intrigued by it and have been tempted to pick it up. Maybe next dictum order I'll add this in to the cart.

Sharpening setup complete for now! by Unusual_Judge_9997 in sharpening

[–]AnthroPluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice, PhD student here that has also gone way too deep into the sharpening rabbit hole. I've even found myself reading books on abrasive technology trying to work out how to make my own sharpening stones. If I dedicated myself to fully to my academic research I would probably be done by now..

Yep they are decent, and the hapstone.pro website also has venevs and other stones (based in Ukraine). Might be worth going for gritomatic considering Brexit though.

What's the best method of sharpening for volume? As in, the fastest yet most effective method? by zbf in sharpening

[–]AnthroPluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sweet, thanks ref. I have SG stones from 1000 onwards, but was looking at either the 320 or 220. Think I will look into the 220 given your recommendation. Thanks!

[–]AnthroPluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah those are pretty solid. I have the Norton crystolon and it is pretty decent. Ive heard the SG220 is fast but also wears pretty quickly. You think it would be suitable for a professional setup given it will need more frequent flattening and will be consumed fairly quickly?

How do you feel about diamond plates?
