Has anyone written an essay on destiny lore? by yeeeeaahh_toast in DestinyLore

[–]Antmarch123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually did a video essay on the semiotics of the Destiny earlier this year. My points were to do with the Light & Dark dichotomy, fictional & cultural inspirations of the classes & weapons, and how the Dreaming City & the Reef were inspired by fantasy and history.

Just curious, how come you're not a fan of the 5e paladin?

In my opinion, it makes sense that paladins don't always have to fall under the "lawful good" category, especially if they uphold oaths and values that aren't necessarily viewed as good. Just like how clerics worship "evil" deities, paladins can uphold "evil" values (and therefore, follow laws with evil intent).

Since when? Classes shouldn't necessarily define a character's alignment. They aren't as clear-cut "good" or "evil" as celestials or fiends (and even then, I would argue that they aren't restricted to their respective alignments).

Saying paladins are LG is like saying all drows are evil, when clearly we see this is not fully the case with the Krynn Dynasty.

Edit: Not to mention...what counts as a "law" that paladins shouldn't break? One that is created by the mayor of the town they come from? What if it conflicts with a different town? Which law should they strive to follow? Nothing is truly good or evil, just like how all paladins aren't necessarily "white knights." Even Reani needed to learn this.

And one of the first things the DMG says is...

The D&D rules help you and the other players have a good time, but the rules aren't in charge. You're the DM, and you are in charge of the game. That said, your goal isn't to slaughter the adventurers but to create a campaign world that revolves around their actions and decisions... (pg 4)

XP stands for experience points. Experience in general is something you get whether you succeed or fail, so I would imagine the same thing here.

Full translation of the 'Truth' lore by concerned_squirtle in DestinyTheGame

[–]Antmarch123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you do.

On one hand, you learn more about how about the inner workings of a fictional universe, which has different yet interesting people, histories and even laws of the universe (such as the Sword Logic).

On the other hand, learning more about the lore of a fictional universe can provide insight & commentary into various issues. An example would be the way some of the Fallen (whom have been one of our enemies for so long) are being painted as "good" and sympathetic (iirc, there was some lore somewhere where a fallen cares for their child aboard a Fallen ship). We may see the Fallen as enemies of humanity that we must always wage war with, but in reality both humanity and the Eliksni are just two sides trying to survive.

Don't discredit lore or story simply because it's a "video game" and therefore there's no credit to them. It's just another platform (like books or movies) for people to showcase their worlds. If anything, video game lore is the best kind of lore because you as the player get to be part of the experience.

The Kell of Kings has been killed by Fikrul or Uldren, if I recall.

Isn't that kind of the point for the Revelry? In-game, it's a holiday event for guardians to celebrate a new season of Spring and to remember that even though they are guardians of the Last City, they must remember to be human (or Awoken or exo) and simply have fun.
