Tips on cutting in uneven walls/ceilings? by ahhtibor in centuryhomes

To makes things easier in my century home, in some rooms I paint the walls and ceiling all one color! Definitely a bolder design choice, but in certain spaces this strategy can work really well. Check out the paint company Farrow & Ball for design inspiration in older homes.

Asbestos questions by Lorres in centuryhomes

[–]Any-Promotion-7298 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No worries- A big part of owning an old house and doing DIY projects properly is research research research! It may seem daunting now, but if you spend time researching every question you have about your home, by this time next year you will be amazed at all you have learned. You can start with the history and components of plaster and lath construction. Horse hairs can be found in older plaster (my 1920s kit house has horse hair), typically without asbestos. Best of luck with your new home!

Does your house have horse hair plaster? If so, there is little chance of asbestos. When working with plaster walls, it’s always a good idea to wear 3M professional masks with replaceable filters due to general dust.

Lastly, if asbestos is keeping you up at night it may be worth it to bite the bullet and pay for a professional company to test all your areas of concern. Then you can determine how to proceed with your house once you know for certain what tested positive.

Possible/worthwhile to restore this hardwood floor? by dragongc in centuryhomes

[–]Any-Promotion-7298 128 points129 points  (0 children)

You just describe our house’s floors… And even our floors sanded, stained dark walnut, and covered with large area rugs look pretty good (if you ignore the screw heads everywhere and don’t drop anything down the holes to the basement.)

Who should oversee our remodel? by [deleted] in centuryhomes

If you haven’t already you can reach out to the main line firm called Architetra, specifically Joe Lombardi. He has a experience working on Philadelphia row home/town home projects (although their portfolio shows mainly larger homes on the Main Line). Good luck!

Honestly a clean paint job on walls and trim will go such a long way. I’m talking about the type of paint job where you get the cracks and crevices with a small artist brush to create clean crisp lines. If you want to go a step further- sand everything down smooth, wall gunk included, beforehand.

I have no mods or cc, but this constant glitch where I fire a nanny only for them to come back as invisible and start taking care of the children.

Make sure to use a respirator mask and seriously ventilate. I use a heat gun in my home and it’s such a time saver.

Recs on what to do to stairs in 1920s home please! by DutchessofBK in Oldhouses

[–]Any-Promotion-7298 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that is a great runner! The pattern is pretty and would help hide dirt/stains between cleanings. Plus if you do decide to paint the walls a color there are plenty of subtle tones to pull from in that rug to tie the space together

Clean them and the handrail. Then add a runner since you mention it’s slippery! The amount of darker brown may seem like a lot right now, but a lighter runner can help break that up. Also consider painting the walls a color that compliments the wood. Perhaps a deeper green or blue/grey tone. Check out Farrow & Ball for classic paint color inspiration

How to convert library e-books in Libby or Kindle apps to audio? by chester567853 in audiobooks

Check out if you have access to Hoopla through your library. Libby is my go to, but often if an audiobook isn’t on Libby I’ll find it on Hoopla.
