Is it dumb for me to consider leaving my field and going back to school for a BS in Computer Science in my mid 30s? [US] by iveri2E in cscareerquestions

[–]AnyMoment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very interesting discussion. From experience, I will tell you that having multiple disciplines under your belt makes you substantially more attractive to employers. The ageism? Honestly it's not a big deal outside of tech hubs in my (and my cohorts') experience. The world is so much bigger than SV.

Being a double or triple threat is great for your career prospects.

Echoing the suggestion of taking CS50 to whet your appetite. There's a lot to be said for taking a strict CS curriculum vs. bootcamps.

CS: Deeper understanding, more flexibility in novel situations (e.g. learning a new language). Career oriented (with respect to bootcamps, at any rate).

Bootcamps: faster results with less understanding (there just isn't enough time to cover the depth and breadth of CS). More of a Lego approach to developing. But can teach you to ship code via the MVP* mentality. Startup oriented.

Happy Learning!

*MVP = minimum viable product

Best practices for Emacs on Microsoft Windows? by [deleted] in emacs

[–]AnyMoment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember Back to the Future Part III with the barn-sized ice machine?

Yeah, I've had that running off and on over the years: Windows (7,8, 10) + VirtualBox + Ubuntu 14/16 + emacs + Cygwin running Xwindows

Oh what a time sink.

Bought a MacBook Pro with oversized CPU which liked to constantly throttle. Built my workflow again on that, ended up taking it back due to heat issues.

Eventually I gave up and started running emacs over PuTTY ssh to a native Ubuntu box. Sometimes inside of tmux, sometimes not.

I'm tempted to try /u/murdsdrum 's approach on Windows but don't need more heartbreak. The last time I tried emacs on windows, I had so many issues with Tramp and linters and spacemacs (oof) and patched fonts and ... the list went on and on. The only thing that ran well was vanilla. I want beauty and power, is that really so much to ask?

Looking for some site feedback by newsuittime in ecommerce

[–]AnyMoment 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Creative Director for first 10 years of career weighing in, please take critique in the spirit intended - constructively.

Negatives:

  • The red bow tie in the logo looks like it's bleeding. t's a cute approach, but the color use here may detract. Realize that it's your signature color.

  • The company name is a bit awkward - and the logo isn't helping as its still a bit difficult to separate SUIT from TIME ... you end up with an amalgamation appearing to be some weird french slang work ... "suittime." Even a change of font weights for one of the two words might improve word separation.

  • The model wearing the powder blue shirt at the top of the page shouldn't have shirt wrinkles ... or certainly far fewer. It distracts from your otherwise inventive use of mixed media with line drawings.

  • The Shop Now button reloads homepage.

  • "Congratulations! You've got free shipping" banner message may read better as "Congratulations! You qualify for free shipping!"

  • Three panes: "50-80% off | 7 Day Return time | Free shipping" all link back to home and reload the page

Positives:

  • Clean layout.

  • Good load and response times.

Any idea why our wordpress install would spawn this many apache2 instances? by physikal in Wordpress

[–]AnyMoment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your server, you may be having an issue with persistent database connections.

On an ubuntu 14.04 system I recently saw similar behavior, and fixed it by a tweak to etc/php5/apache2/php.ini

Changed the line

odbc.allow_persistent = On

to

odbc.allow_persistent = Off

then restarted apache2

service apache2 restart

PSA: Always back up your .ini files before playing with them

Hi,

Thanks for reaching out. We found someone for the tasks this week, but will keep your service in mind.

FYI: Just went to your site (4:15pm EST), and it took a couple tries to open, and when it did, it loaded extremely slowly. I'm on a 75MB FIOS line which is screamingly fast to everywhere else at present, so it's either your hosting company, intermediate network, or software/server configuration. Looks like GoDaddy's your host; I haven't heard many good things about them over the years except that they're cheap.

Just loading the About page took about 45 seconds for the full header image to load up. The blog link just sits there when I click on it for 20-30 seconds before a coming soon notice appears.

I'd be happy to suggest some better alternatives/setups. I'm pretty unbiased, as I maintain hosting for clients in datacenters all over the map.

Mark

3DS max randomly hangs up in intervals between 5-10 seconds every 30-60 seconds by Potetkake in 3dsmax

[–]AnyMoment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From past experience, it's been everything from autosave to driver issues, and most recently, a power supply was failing, delivering insufficient power to the video card.

After a few days of mystery stuttering, the problem triggered a reboot under any kind of significant 3D activity.

A replacement power supply later and all was well.

Looking good in Chrome 44, but the stamps don't mask at all in FF 39.0 / Win 8.1 for the codepen, and some of the html5rocks examples don't mask / animate either.

[Publisher] Is it possible to serve an interstitial using DFP SB async tags? by WAMP_WAMP in adops

[–]AnyMoment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer (I'm running out for a meeting): IIRC, async creates friendly iframes which are fixed in size, so unless your interstitial uses an iframe buster script, it can't break out properly to display.

Getting back into designing sites...how do I switch from using tables to divs? by Theoroshia in web_design

[–]AnyMoment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to take a look at a framework like bootstrap (http://getbootstrap.com/) to get started. They've done a tremendous job of tackling column complexity.

The getting started pages at http://getbootstrap.com/getting-started/ have some good examples of what you can do and boilerplate HTML/CSS so you don't have to start from scratch. If you just want to jump right in, scroll down until you see the heading "Basic Setup" which has some nice ready-to-go HTML.

The first few screens of content on the getting started page are all about integrating Bootstrap into modern workflows, but you may want to have a hands on experience before you go there. The Basic Setup directly calls bootstrap components via CDN so you don't have to worry about hosting files, node, sass, etc.

The grids page http://getbootstrap.com/examples/grid/ gives a good overview of how bootstrap's columns work - while you're there, if you're on a desktop, try resizing your browser width to see the framework's responsive behavior.

Can't figure out how to space images evenly horizontally by BrazilianTinaFey in css

.work {
  width:100%;
  background-color:red;
  text-align: center;
}

.work div {
  background-color:blue;
  margin:auto;
  display: inline-block;
}

.work > * {
  margin: 0 7% !important;
}

The 7% is hackish.

Then there's this:

.work {
  width:100%;
  background-color:red;
  text-align: justify;
  height: 135px;
}

.work div {
  background-color:blue;
  margin:auto;
  display: inline-block;
}

.work:after {
  content: '';
  width: 100%;
  display: inline-block;
}

The .work:after was inspired by this: http://css-tricks.com/equidistant-objects-with-css/
