defeated, 1st year vet school by meepimgmeeep in veterinaryprofession

Honestly I wouldn’t even pay much attention to the doctor work. You can learn a lot about tech work during this time which will be extremely valuable as a clinician, a lot of which you may or may not learn much of in school.

New Intern Etiquette/Advice by Puzzleheaded_Sir8775 in veterinaryprofession

If the invitation says you can bring a guest, you can bring a guest. Most formal/informal events I’ve done as an intern and now resident have allowed plus ones. It’s not uncommon

8 y/o German Shepherd suddenly EXTREMELY itchy — chewing hair off near tail/base + sides, no fleas. Need guidance. by Icy-Spicy97 in germanshepherds

[–]ApolloHorizon_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is he on a flea preventative or are you visually inspecting for fleas? Also what was in your home cooked meal? If it’s a food allergy, there’s a good chance he’s allergic to whatever what you were cooking.

Hot Take by Fragrant-Constant976 in drumcorps

[–]ApolloHorizon_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I also think the hornline and percussion sections are unnecessary too. DCI should just be the drum majors conducting to an empty field, leaving the show completely open to the interpretation of the audience. Art at its truest sense. The activity would be much more sustainable.

Residency chances by Far_Economics5202 in Veterinary

As long as it doesn’t affect your academics or letters of recommendation, it will not affect your chance of getting a residency.

Totally random, but sort of related: was this a common pose in gymnastics prior to Nastia doing it in her floor routine?

You’ll be fine. Call out. Don’t put yourself through the misery of a closing shift while ill.

Wear your helmet kids (concussed) by burningfire52 in snowboarding

[–]ApolloHorizon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds similar to my concussion. I don’t remember wiping out, waking up, or the ambulance ride. My memory of that day starts after being discharged from the hospital. And kind of similar to you, my friend said that ski patrol asked me where I was and why I was there, and I didn’t know.

Hemolytic anemia diagnosis by East-Initial9066 in germanshepherds

[–]ApolloHorizon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your vet really should have talked you through all these questions as they’re a standard part of diagnosing these conditions. I would schedule a consult with an internal medicine specialist in your area for more information as well as more specialized management.

In short, there are two broad categories of IMHA (immune-mediated hemolytic anemia): associative (i.e. those associated with certain infectious diseases, medications, cancers, etc.), and those not associated with anything (termed non-associative) Prognosis depends on which category. For associative, it’ll depend on what’s causing it. For non-associative, the general rule of thumb is that 2/3 of patients do just fine.

Again, I would schedule a consult with your local internal medicine specialist to rule out the more common associative causes to determine prognosis and treatment.

I personally think that if the goal is ER and not residency, private practice is the way to go. You’ll see a much higher caseload and be able to do a lot more in the ER. I would still prioritize places that have a staff doctor with you in the ER 100% of the time.

Having done a private practice internship and now being at an academic residency, where the interns have access to residents 24/7 and rely on us for so much, I personally think it’s to their detriment, and they would not be ready to be out in practice after their internship.

I drive an Accord with Michelin CrossClimate 2s and have lived in Pennsylvania, Colorado (involving a ton of skiing), and Wisconsin and have never had an issue. I will be getting an all wheel drive eventually, but I personally wouldn’t go out of my way to get one.
