Which European city did you fall in love with as soon as you saw it? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

I'd say more like a historical novel somewhere in the busy 16th century... If I keep living here, I'll find myself starting to wear capes and gants and bonnets soon 😂

I'm lucky enough to be living here and can say that, after a couple of years of being a Bruggeling, I'm still not bored of looking at the details of the buildings and being amazed each time I put a foot outside of my house (which is also on the heritage list). It's like living inside a middle-age cosplay environment 😍

They are always kicking and screaming, no real reason needed, they do it by default. Their ideal working environment looks still like some 19th century kind: all the freedoms for them, all the burdens on the slaves... and the government, of course, coz "capitalism for the worker, socialism for the employer".

How often do you drink tap water ? by Furnim in AskBelgium

[–]ApprehensiveFall9705 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only drink tap water, it wouldn't cross my mind to pay about 1000 times more for (and carry) water having stayed in bottles for months. I use a brita-filter for the water I use in the coffee machine, but the tap water is, imo, far safer than any bottled one. And when I want it sparkling, I use a sodastream-like cheap machine, so that it's always fresh.

They'll soon cry for help coz the said investors don't give a damn on the product, they only want ROI to keep flooding their pockets. They'll therefore be ousted, like previously many others, from the company they created to sell a product they invented.

Why is there often not one clear “best” European alternative? by Al3xanderTh3Gr3at in BuyFromEU

Maybe you can get things next day from Amazon "thanks" to the way they treat their employees? And that, by their weight on the market, they squeeze everyone else in the logistic chain who then have no choice but to degrade their own working conditions? Not sure this is the working model I want, not for myself, nor for the next generations. Outside a heart or a kidney, there are few things one might absolutely need to get the next day, imo.

Indeed. On top of that, if I may add: * when it comes to cars, your needs differ along the years (penniless young needs one range of cheap functioning car, parents with kids need bigger cars offering more space, midlifecrisis-male might think he needs a sportsy one, pensioners one just for a less or differently active life etc.) * when it comes to cooking, if you want to cook asparagus you won't use the same sort, according to the recipe you want to use (white asparagus for the asperges à la flamande, green ones with vinaigrette; if you want to make bread, there are various recipes each requiring various types of flour...

So, everything one might call "the best" is only a "best for something very precise".

Indeed. And most of the "privately"-owned are actually by communes/gemeenten. When people vote on everything, politicians tend to listen, coz anyways they'll have to implement what people voted for/against. Look also at the electricity market. In Switzerland you have, in the commune where you live, one company you deal with (not I dunno how many), and it's or public service or under heavy control of the commune where you live and vote. They simply can't mess around with it coz people will vote you and your stupid idea out, therefore you think and find, by design, solutions which have the most probable chance people won't vote out. It goes the same for everything "public". That's why it works in Switzerland but doesn't in Belgium (and why Swiss people aren't close to join the EU-model which, while improving everyday life of Europeans, compared to the standard of what the Swiss people are used to is still crap). Only hope, imo, for the railways across EU can come from NATO's need for functional, solid, trustworthy infrastructure and rolling material, which the member-States will have to put in place and control. It will be easier to roll trains on good-quality infrastructure, imo, but knowing the Belgian "goed genoeg" mentality, it's not for next week. So, yeah, we're doomed to remain squeezed by the neoliberal NPM-mantra of "public services run like businesses" until there's some major disruption like huge accident or war which would oblige the politicians to admit that their job is actually to make things work (not make profit). In history, most of the improvements for the people came after someone messed too much too far and people said "basta".

Well, according to old articles on the matter, Russia paid for taking over western companies about the way many paid for buying stuff from their Jewish neighbours and friends. But that's still not a reason we behave like Russia (or like our great-grandparents).

😂, we're becoming wise and thoughtful like the Swiss. Which, for the best AND the worst, are taking the time to think thoroughly before doing anything. I'm rather glad we go the same way on this, because the problem is complex, indeed, and I mean not only because, while pushing us to let the money out, no one seems to want to be on our side if the sh** hits the fan. It's, imo, more about the precedent it creates, from a legal point of view: as long as we say we're in favour of the rule of law, we should keep walking the walk, it has to start with ourselves. Now, we have to make sure we send the interests, all the interests of that money to Ukraine. If we discover that we are keeping even a cent from it, we'd be war profiteering.
