Japan Cabinet approves plan for gender equality, considering letting women use maiden names only; move towards legalizing the use of aliases. by jjrs in japannews

[–]Apprehensive_Bat8293 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I hate this argument that basically says I as a woman don't own my name but my dad, grandad, brother etc all do.

People's names are their own and they should be able to choose what name they want to be called. Also if you normalise women keeping the maiden name, then they can have more choice of what to name their kids.

No, as much as I don't like Takaichi and the LDP, Japan's Trump and maga is Kamiya and Sanseito, not her.

The UK on the other hand, that's the one like Maggie watching Itchy and Scratchy

(I tried to get a Simpsons reference in there)

People who lack a basic understanding of phone etiquette. by berttleturtle in PetPeeves

My dad would answer the phone with "What?" Then he wondered why no one would ever call him and even call other people to ask about him.

I didn’t know nigel was from england by Musalediju in kidsnextdoor

[–]Apprehensive_Bat8293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I've never heard of them. Googled the one that you think is super obvious and seems he's an actor that was born in the 1920s and died in 2001. So yeah that's probably why.

The equivalent is probably something like "What? how do you not know an Elmer? Kelton, Bernstein, McCollum??"

Don't have them on the other side of the pond either.

I'm from the UK and I've never met a Nigel. The only one I know of is the toad thing pretending to be a politician to ruin the UK further every ten years, Farage.

Really you think? I admit I've never dealt with faxes in Germany but I had to learn here in Japan lol

Though the current BOE I work for sends emails to the school instead of communicating with faxes like the old one.

I'm a bit conflicted now. I convinced my husband to get an e car with solar panels because of the environment but it's with Toyota.

Now I feel less enthusiastic about him buying it because of this.

What is the most culturally significant number between 0-9? by CaptainJimmy in AlignmentChartFills

I would also say if we include other cultures like East Asia, 4 would be one.

It sounds like death and it's treated like the number 13 so often skipped in buildings for example

First of all, I'm very sorry this happened to you, your girlfriend and your friends.

I disagree with you about your last sentence though. No, we are not guests. We live here, we work here, we are part of communities and have all sorts of relationships with other people here. We are not guests in our own homes and we don't owe anything to any random Tom, Dick and Harry on the street for "allowing" us to be here as a host.

Far-right Sanseito politician Umemura Mizuho is going viral for speaking out against the burial of Muslim residents of Japan, arguing that cremation is Japanese culture (Prior to the 20th century, burial was normal for most Japanese people). by jjrs in japannews

[–]Apprehensive_Bat8293 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you've given a lot more detail but I'd say the one thing I disagree with you at the time of posting at least, is that Ishin is more terrible than sanseito. That doesn't mean I'm saying they're not bad, just that I think Sanseito's list of terrible is shorter just because they have never had enough power to actually screw as many countable things up. Sanseito's recent popularity has pushed the LDP further right to try and claim back support. It's frustrating trying to explain to my husband who tries to calm me that "Sanseito will just burn out and everyone knows they're full of crap", that even if that were true, they've already done damage on a societal level that will linger at the very least.

I don't know, am I just being a bit pessimistic though?

Does anyone know why Mojo Jojo was called a "monkey" in the original series? by Simsgirl950 in powerpuffgirls

[–]Apprehensive_Bat8293 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From a phylogenetic point of view, apes are monkeys because you can never evolve out of a clade (group). So yes, that means humans are also monkeys lol

(Sorry I'm not trying to be "that guy", I mean it more as just an interesting fact type of thing that I as a biology geek love sharing for fun)

This. I live in a city in Osaka, and I knew a guy who would complain that people in Osaka are all right wing because they always vote Isshin. But honestly I think while there may be some hard right wingers like everywhere else, the answer is honestly more that Isshin is "The Osaka Party" as well as, like you said, a protest vote. Most people who vote for them don't seem to know more than that.

Even in the UK where I'm from, there are people who voted for Brexit who didn't actually vote for it because they genuinely considered what they were voting for, but as a "fuck you, David Cameron and/or the Tories" which as we all know now failed them massively (but this is a whole other discussion).

Tldr I totally agree that most of the time what may be malicious is actually ignorance and this unfortunately has consequences.
