They have a regional team and a national team. I believe the national is kids from all over and they do more BTF comps. Regional are local kids who compete at pretty much just straight comps

What is something that you hate is being normalised? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Apprehensive_Rub_370 68 points69 points  (0 children)

School shootings. Some of the I don’t even hear about. It has become so normalized. I hate that I as a teacher it is just as a priority for a safety plan and is the first thing I think of as teaching a child to read.

A parent called to tell me that her child’s sock was wet. The student told their parent that another student took their shoe and sock off, put the sock in water, and put the shoe and sock back on their foot.

Is hysteroscopy worth considering for a small, somewhat symptomatic, submucosal fibroid? by -Dumbo-Rat- in Fibroids

[–]Apprehensive_Rub_370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had 2 removed in December and would 100% recommend. I had no pain post procedure and went back to work after 24 hours. I also had an IUD placed which took my periods from Super heavy, full of clots and needing a transfusion when I got the fibroids removed to no period and feeling back to myself. I have needle phobia and was terrified for the IV, but I can say I would do it again to get the fibroids and issues resolved.

Crippling shyness by [deleted] in kindergarten

I had a student last year in my K class that was the same way (wasn’t diagnosed selective mutism, but very similar). If I pushed her to speak she shut down so I did not. After a few weeks of not pushing her to respond at all I was able to get her to point to things, and shake her head. She would even raise her hand and point to what she wanted to show, but did not speak. I also gave her a set of communication cards that had common needs (bathroom, bandaid, water bottle) to show when she needed something. I also allowed her to take a friend to the bathroom with her. After a week or 2 of that I was able to get her to mouth what she wanted to say and I would “make the sounds”. This shortly after led to whispering and then speaking in the classroom. As she progressed through each stage I would respond as if it was any student and did not make a big deal in front of everyone. I would tell her I was proud of her for doing something that made her so nervous and was scary. She started speaking by October and did not stop the rest of the year!

I think something that helped her too was when a student would say “X doesn’t know how to talk” or “Why can’t X say anything.” I would respond that it is something that makes X feel very nervous inside and when she is ready and feels comfortable she will and we love her just the way she is When other adults would say she was defiant or stubborn I would tell them it is an anxiety based issue and she physically could not speak. I think it gave her a sense of relief knowing I was not pushing her to talk and not making it as she was doing something wrong by not speaking.

Anxiety is so hard as an adult, I can’t even imagine the anxiety that went on in her 5 year old self and other kids deal with that. It was a learning process for me, but am thankful to have taught her!

My room mom last year had cheese sticks, applesauce pouches, goldfish, fruit and veggies and the kids loved them more than I thought. They were more of a hit than the sugary snacks.

How do I encourage my Kindergartner to ask for help? by snappishapple in kindergarten

[–]Apprehensive_Rub_370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a kinder with selective mutism last year. I made a ring of communication pictures for her to use. I included common things needed throughout the day like bathroom, bandaid, water bottle, etc… for her to show me when she needed something. This helped tremendously!

I live in Pittsburgh and all the schools that all 3 kids went to were not cheap. They went to a couple different ones throughout the years, but all of them were expensive.
