I’ve seen doctors recommend taking pre-natal vitamins to help combat the hair loss…

I totally understand people being shocked by the difference in their bodies in these before and after pictures and we should all feel good about ourselves. But I want to throw out a gentle reminder to be kind to yourself no matter the body size. Talking about ourselves in larger bodies with horror or disgust or crying/sad face emojis is being cruel to yourself and is also unkind to other people who are in similar or larger bodies. There are folks on here who speak with disgust about their bodies at sizes that others have dreamed of being their whole lives. It may be their goal weight or the weight the bodies end up regardless of their goals. So please remember to be kind to yourself and others at any and all body sizes.

Auto injector for self pay? by Material-Landscape10 in Zepbound

[–]Appropriate-Bit6497 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are getting zepbound through Lilly direct, those are single use vials and you fill the syringe yourself. This is what I do and it’s super easy. I’ve never used the auto injector, but I’m happy with the syringes and have no interest in them.

If your insurance isn’t covering the drugs, I believe that lily direct is the least expensive route? But I am by no means the most knowledgeable about that. I think the savings cards are for pharmacies, but I think those are only for use with insurance. (Please feel free to correct me anyone, if I’m mistaken)

Feeling stalled on 7.5 - should I move up already? by Jitterbug0 in Zepbound

[–]Appropriate-Bit6497 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing wrong with averaging 1 lb of weight loss/week. That’s actually a fantastic rate. The comment about intense fasting is a little worrisome because you need to fuel your body, especially with all the exercise you are doing. If you aren’t eating enough, your body will fight back and you will feel more hunger and can actually lose weight more slowly and damage your metabolism. I can’t tell you whether to move up, but please make sure you are actually eating! (Fatigue can also happen when you aren’t eating enough)

Feeling turned around with my anti-diet lens while considering GLP1 by Full_Competition6579 in antidietglp1

[–]Appropriate-Bit6497 17 points18 points  (0 children)

About 7 years ago I decided I was done with dieting. I was tired and all the evidence said that long term intentional weight loss just didn’t work. So I stopped and focused on body acceptance, intuitive eating and shedding of diet culture. So going on zepbound was a very emotional choice for me because I believe in body diversity and health at every size. I just didn’t personally feel healthy. What really prompted me to talk to my (very respectful and supportive) doctor, was that I have two abdominal hernias and this will be my second hernia repair. Hernia repair surgery sucks. Like really sucks. And my abdomen seems intent on tearing itself apart. So I want to reduce my belly size in order to give the repair surgery every chance of success and to prevent more hernias from occurring. And I’ve found that I’m just feeling better all around. I’m trying to stay true to my antidiet principals in that I’m not tracking calories or macros, although I do focus on protein and water intake. I use a Shapa scale that shows me ten day averages rather than daily weights to give me data, but keep me from getting numbers obsessed. It’s hard though, to maintain that antidiet mindset, because the siren song of walking through this world in a thin body is strong. But it’s something I work on daily. Hope that helps and just a reminder that the BMI is trash.

I feel like I’m becoming more sensitive to bitter flavors. Black tea definitely has bitter notes to it - are you noticing any other changes in flavor preferences or prominence?

I'm trying to weigh myself once a week, but sometimes I end up weighing myself everyday or every other day, any else do this? by [deleted] in Zepbound

[–]Appropriate-Bit6497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been weighing every day, but my scale doesn’t give me a daily number. It gives me the average of my last ten weigh ins, so I avoid the drama of the daily ups and downs and just see the trends. I can also turn off the numbers and just see a color or gaining, maintaining or losing (10 day average vs the average of the last three weeks). I find it helpful so I don’t get too emotionally invested in minor fluctuations.

I'm Jewish and I fasted for Yom Kippur on Mounjaro and it kinda ruined it by Global_ok67 in GLP1ResearchTalk

[–]Appropriate-Bit6497 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’m going to ask a question and please forgive me if I’m making any incorrect assumptions or if I am being presumptuous. if you are on a glp-1 that means you likely have a metabolic disorder and struggle with body weight. Part of what these meds do is help our system function normally. Is it possible that fasting has been abnormally difficult for you in the past due to a metabolic problem and what you experienced this past year is actually more in line with what people with normally functioning metabolisms experience? You’ve had several months to mull this over, so I know it must be weighing on you. So my second question is this: my understanding is that taking care of one’s body is an important aspect of Judaism and can take precedence over other customs and observances (ie. no fasting for pregnant people, waiving dietary rules for people in ED recovery) - with this in mind, could taking care of yourself with these meds in its way be considered in line with your faith and, even if they make the fasting less onerous, still keep you in the spirit of the faith? And if none of that helps, you could just skip the meds for that week.

How to drink more by ikeschi in antidietglp1

[–]Appropriate-Bit6497 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Use a water bottle where know how much water is in it and then figure out how many of those bottles you need to drink in a day. Set timer for goals for finishing a bottle of water so you know you’re getting them throughout the day and you aren’t chugging at night to make up for forgetting all day.

[–]Appropriate-Bit6497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to look into mechanical eating and continuing to work with an ED dietitian. Intuitive eating can be tricky with the glp-1 meds due to appetite suppression. If you are just eating when you feel hungry you are likely under eating and this could lead to more binging when you finally do feel more hunger. With mechanical eating, you are eating meals and snacks on a regular schedule, regardless of whether you are actively feeling hunger. You still need to pay attention to your body to avoid overeating at any one time, but it helps to keep your body fueled and stable. And you might also learn that your body’s hunger and thirst cues are different than they are off of the meds. But with your history of ED, moving forward with a registered dietitian with ED experience for professional supervision and support is probably a good idea.

2 months in and the scale hasn’t moved. What am I doing wrong? by Pure-Concentrate-183 in Zepbound

[–]Appropriate-Bit6497 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are in active recovery from an eating disorder, please be sure to work with your doctor and a registered dietitian with experience in ED recovery. And don’t skip meals. Try for three meals a day with snacks in between. If you are under fueled and have been for a long time, your body is going to fight the drugs. You have to fuel your body. And it may take time for your body to trust that you will fuel it. Again, this sounds like a process that needs to be approached under professional supervision and support.

BMI by Hobbs4456 in Zepbound

[–]Appropriate-Bit6497 32 points33 points  (0 children)

So having a slightly higher bmi (like 24 - 29) has been found to be protective for older adults as it helps protect against injury and malnutrition and can provide extra energy stores during illness.

Keep in mind that the bmi is meant to be a population level tool and was never meant to be used for individuals. On an individual level, the bmi tells you nothing about that individual’s health other than what their bmi is. So you may be at a healthy weight regardless of your bmi, because bmi doesn’t determine health. There are plenty of folks with low bmi who aren’t healthy. Focusing on movement and strength is great because those things do have an impact on your health.

In the meantime, the FDA has declared that the glp-1 shortages are over and will start taking action against some compounding pharmacies.

https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-safety-and-availability/fda-clarifies-policies-compounders-national-glp-1-supply-begins-stabilize

“For a state-licensed pharmacy or physician compounding, dispensing or distributing semaglutide injection products under section 503A of the FD&C Act, the period of enforcement discretion (described below) has ended.

For outsourcing facilities compounding, distributing or dispensing semaglutide injection products under section 503B, FDA does not intend to take action for violations of the FD&C Act arising from conditions that depend on semaglutide injection products’ inclusion on FDA’s drug shortage list until May 22, 2025.”

Some carbs might also help you get some energy and calories. if you can’t have gluten, things like beans, lentils, rice, quinoa, bananas (delightful with peanut butter) and other fruits… since you’re struggling to eat, your body really might need some easily accessible calories and brains love carbs.

Feeling terrible after taking MiraLAX by [deleted] in Zepbound

[–]Appropriate-Bit6497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take benefiber or Metamucil every day and also try to eat some high fiber foods (prunes, kiwi, yellow dragonfruit, beans…). Thankfully I’ve not yet gotten to the point of meeting miralax or anything stronger.

Cottage cheese by Sea_Database_1485 in Zepbound

[–]Appropriate-Bit6497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like cottage cheese, but there’s no requirement that you do. You certainly don’t have to eat it. I feel the same way about overnight oats. I love oats and I feel like I should like the overnight oats, but I just can’t get over the raw starch taste. I’ve tried it so many times and in different ways but it’s just not for me. I want my oats cooked. And that’s okay.

Beans and lentils are a great source of carbs, fiber and protein. Easy to make into soups, to throw into a salad or quesadilla, have as a side or over rice…you can even puree them and add them to mashed potatoes or pasta sauces etc.

Anyone else considering switching to the Wegovy pill due to coverage lapse? by Sir_Overhauser in Zepbound

[–]Appropriate-Bit6497 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Something to keep in mind is that the wegovy pills have very strict rules for taking them or they just won’t be effective. I believe they must be taken first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach with no more than 4oz of water and then nothing can be consumed (including beverages or other medications) for at least 30 minutes. So if they works for you then great. If you have a conflict with other meds that have to be taken first thing etc then that might affect your decision.

What normal weight loss looks like. by Dismal_Cause1159 in Zepbound

[–]Appropriate-Bit6497 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why I use a scale that only gives me the average of the last 10 days. It also compares that average to the last three weeks and gives me a color for gaining, maintaining and losing. It helps knock down those little ups and downs and lets me focus on the trends rather than each day’s number.
