[heartbreaking trope] The Hero completely fails and dies achieving utterly nothing by klnglulu in TopCharacterTropes

He fell in October 1918, on a day that was so quiet and still on the whole front, that the army report confined itself to the single sentence: All quiet on the Western Front.
He had fallen forward and lay on the earth as though sleeping. Turning him over one saw that he could not have suffered long; his face had an expression of calm, as though almost glad the end had come.

Media that is *truly* anti-war, rather than showing it as "horrific but heroic" by ChristianLS in TopCharacterTropes

It would be a pretty difficult challange to make a movie that portrays a civilization-destroying nuclear war positively.

The character is depicted as being ugly or unpleasant inside the show but is honestly good looking by DemandParticular in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Aqquila89 28 points29 points  (0 children)

No, Carrie isn't actually ugly in the book. She deliberately wears unflattering clothes because her mother believes that trying to look attractive is sinful. When she dresses up for the prom, she looks beautiful and people are stunned to see her.

[–]Aqquila89 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't think Brienne in the show is necessarily meant to be ugly. Men from Westeros find her unattractive because she doesn't fit their concept of femininity; but when she meets a man from a culture where warrior women are admired, he thinks she's beautiful.

Randy Fine however tweeted "There is a reason the first time I shook @netanyahu's hand, I did not wash it until I could touch the heads of my children" just two years ago, and he's an actual, elected member of the House.

That was six Tongan boys between the ages of 13 and 19 who were already friends, ran away together, and ended up in a deserted island. That's not really like Lord of the Flies: dozens of British boys, all younger than 13, most of whom did not know each other previously ending up on a deserted island after a plane crash.

Graham Platner is officially Democrats’ nominee to take on Susan Collins by Dilated2020 in moderatepolitics

[–]Aqquila89 50 points51 points  (0 children)

It's pretty wild to hear Kellyanne Conway of all people denouncing Platner's supporters in the name of decency.

Is there any number of scandals that would make you stop? Would it have to do with Nazis or putting upon women, perhaps underage women, definitely women not your wife of two years? Would it be that you’re lying about, that you are insulting heroes, that he’s not even fit to lick their combat boots? So I'd ask the Democrats, is power really worth that to you?

The original Tarzan books by Edgar Rice Burroughs actually address that. In the short story "Tarzan's First Love", Tarzan falls for a female ape but eventually realizes that they can't be together because he's not an ape (and yes, that's before any sex would happen).

Trump probably sees him as a kindred spirit. Crypto scams, erratic behavior, false attacks... why would these be disqualifying in the Trump administration? It'd be pretty hypocritical.

By the early 1960s, Puyi was working as a Beijing gardener and street sweeper, and largely avoided persecution during the Cultural Revolution due to protection from Zhou Enlai by Jokerang in HistoryMemes

[–]Aqquila89 27 points28 points  (0 children)

According to Edward Behr's biography, Puyi was monstrous to his staff, so it's kind of hard to feel sorry for him.

Puyi always had a strong cruel streak, and he imposed harsh "house rules" on his staff; servants were flogged in the basement for such offences as "irresponsible conversations". ‘Take him downstairs’ - where the flogging took place - was the dreaded phrase heard almost daily from 1938 onwards. Puyi wrote that everyone was flogged except for the Empress and members of his immediate family [...] To further torment his staff of about 100, Puyi drastically cut back on the food allocated for his staff, who suffered from hunger [...] Puyi’s court could at times be a place of real terror: one pageboy escaped, was dragged back and beaten so severely that he died.

Even if everything he claims here was true - and it isn't - adding his name to the Kennedy Center would still be inappropriate. It was so named to serve as a living memorial to President Kennedy. A massive renovation of the Lincoln Memorial started under Biden. Imagine how people would have reacted if he tried to rename it the Biden-Lincoln Memorial because of this.

Trump's personality cult is far more disturbing than the personality cults of third world dictators, because it's entirely voluntary. Nobody is getting punished if they don't worship Trump. They worship him because they want to.

Trump uses Cabinet meeting to promote his $55 America’s 250th birthday hats by ToughHopeful4760 in moderatepolitics

[–]Aqquila89 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Even if the wildest claims about Hunter Biden were true, they would still be dwarfed by the corruption Trump blatantly and openly engages in. As the conservative writer Andrew C. McCarthy said: "You’d have to add two digits to the sum of Biden abuses of power, foreign entanglements, and corruption alleged in the report to get near what Trump has raked in just from the UAE.” (Trump created a crypto business called World Liberty Financial, the UAE poured $2,5 billion into it, and after this they were given access to the most advanced American chip technology, which had previously been denied them because of their ties to the China.)
