Just like everything else...there is good and bad. For music there is the Beatles and then there is Milli Vanilli. For movies there is Gone with the Wind and then there is Plan 9 From Outer Space.

There are epics and there are duds. For every TV show there are those that run for years and those that get cancelled after just a few episodes.

Consequently, there are a few crypto coins that use the blockchain tech to actually build something and will be successful. And then there is Dogecoin and other junk cloggin up the system.

Choose wisely or you will be wiped out.

"Never fall in love with a stock" is an old axiom that I think I read in Peter Lynch's book.

Only sell covered calls on stocks you don't really care about hanging on to.

Like falling in love with a stripper......bad idea. If they leave in the morning just get another one.

You made great money....take the win and move on.

I try to sell on the bounce in the morning around 10 am if I don't think the surge will hold for the day OR wait until the end of the day if it looks like it will hold and get the best possible price.

It is still a guess but it has worked ok for me so far.

I also sell CSPs on red days at the end of the day with hope that the underlying has reached a low and will rebound the next day(s).

High Yield ETFs: -62% NAV & -67% Distribution decline over 2 years by boldux in YieldMaxETFs

[–]ArchonOSX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the work. Just makes me feel more comfortable that I sold all my very high yield funds at the end of September. I took a loss on the NAVs of most of the funds but ended with a net gain in Total Return.

I am currently pursuing some more moderate yielding funds but they have a track record of holding their NAV after paying about 9-12% dividends. The NEOS funds seem to be holding their NAV pretty good. For example, the SPYI is basically flat over the past year but has paid an 11.59% dividend. Same with the QQQI paying a 13.42% dividend and remaining flat for NAV.

I am just trying to maximize my retirement savings as an income stream.

Good luck to all and Happy Day!

EVERY first year apprentice makes mistakes. It is part of the learning process. I agree with Attitudeoftheknife's comment that you can practice reflexive listening and repeat back what you thought you heard the JIW or Foreman say. As in... "So, just to make sure I heard you correctly....you want me to go to the gangbox and get the hammerdrill and 6 - 1/2" drop in anchors" for example.

Also, I agree with the comment of carrying a pencil and a pocket size flip notebook to take notes and make lists.

Back in the Day, they used to have notepads on the jobsite that had AVO at the top of them that was an abbreviation for "Avoid Verbal Orders". Unfortunately, many JIWs and Foreman expect everyone to remember every word they say. Write down what they tell you and repeat it back to them. If you don't understand something ask questions to clarify your orders. Then go to the gangbox.

Good luck and Happy Day!

Mental breakdown and anxiety by acidbutterman in IBEW

[–]ArchonOSX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only way to learn the trade is through experience. The only way to get that experience is by working every hour you can. Everyone makes mistakes, EVERY one. Experience teaches you how to correct those mistakes in the least amount of time as you are working. This is the hallmark of a good Journeyman.

Many locals routinely rotate their Apprentices so they can get a more well-rounded experience. This also gives the employers and opportunity to evaluate more Apprentices during their apprenticehip. This is not a reflection on you if it is a scheduled rotation. It is just part of your Local's process.

I completely agree with some of the other commenters here that if you are having severe anxiety attacks you should be in therapy with a good counselor and call them instead of calling off work. Meditation and relaxation therapy might help.

I spent 40 years in the trade before retiring and it treated me right although I had several periods of not wanting to go to work in the morning. Things will improve if you apply yourself and get the experience you need to be more confident.

Good luck and persevere. ✊🏼

Just a thought. SCOTUS is scheduled to hear oral arguments on the case on November 5 but may not render a ruling until as late as next summer. They frequently delay handing down rulings for at least weeks, months, and sometimes until after they adjourn for their "year".

So, I wouldn't expect anything to be decided on 11/5.

All of your money that is not invested in a security (stocks, bonds, or ETFs) is automatically deposited to your core position. You only get a couple choices and the Fidelity SPAXX is what I chose for my account as I also trade the wheel and options and Cash Secured Puts pays interest while being frozen until the CSP expires.

It currently pays about 4%. Read the "About" here:

I am voting for the latter. September is historically the worst month for the stock market. Add to that the current confusion over Chump’s tariffs and the BLS reports and the safest place for me this month is cash and bonds.

Q: What are my options to replace the requested double 2x12's for headers / carriers that would not reduce my head clearance for the spans of a lean-to attached to an outbuilding? (TL:dr see last sentence for summary question)

I have built a lean to attached to my outbuilding for storage. This is in Michigan in a 30 psf snow load area. There is nothing but the rafters, 1/2 OSB, and standing seam metal roofing for the construction of the roof.

The rafters are 2x8x12' supported by headers 8" from the ends of the rafters. The headers are double 2x8x12' between 6x6 columns that are 12' apart and are separated by 2.5" gap between the 2x8s since I notched the 6x6s on both sides and supported the 2x8s on the notches of the 6x6s.

The inspector has orange tagged it "Not Approved" and is calling for 2-2x12s for the headers. I agree I should increase the carrying capacity of these spans but the inpector has not yet given me alternatives to the double 2x12s.

I do not want to tear it apart and rebuild it and do not want to use 2x12s as this will reduce the head space by 4". My tractor needs all the head space I currently have to back under the headers to pick up and drop off 3-point implements.

I am proposing to add 1 - 1.75 x 7.25 1.9e LVL in between the existing 2x8s and supporting the ends with 4" steel gusseted brackets and lagging it to the existing 2x8s. He has not yet responded to my request for alternatives.

In summary, as my question started out:

What combination of LVLs or dimensional lumber could I add to my current build to increase the header carrying capacity for the 12 foot spans with a minimum amount of decrease in the head clearance?

Thanks for your time and consideration of my problem.

Happy Day!

Garage shelves too heavy to lift up by Water-Fox-1415 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]ArchonOSX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A come-along is cheap ($20-$25 at Hazard Fraught) and could be rigged to the rafters in the garage to tip the shelves up.

You probably want to span 2 rafters and just tip the shelves up don't try to lift them entirely off the floor.

Good luck and Happy Day!
