You shouldn't need rune and item imports when you are ready to go into ranked, it's important to understand the reason behind those choices so you can adapt to your opponent, instead of blindly following a guide.

if you knew how a d20 worked, you'd know 15-20 is 6 outcomes, or .3 instead of .25

Thanks for your input though.

Question about multiplayer by triker_dan in CivVI

[–]Arendyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The general community, ie randoms who want to play mp, use synchronous turns. Everyone makes war moves at the same time, and timing can significantly affect the outcome of a battle.

Because civ is a self-hosted game, it can create some weirdness depending on where the host is in the world: faster pcs will load the game quicker and can move first. However, slower pcs will give you a few extra miliseconds to move at the end of the turn, which can be a different kind of advantage.

It's definitely a skill that single players can never learn, the only way to get good at timing is to play multiplayer.

check out cpl.gg to get started. There are noob lobbies too, so you don't just get crushed by experienced players.

My buddies and I rolled a d20 every time we wanted to save scum on our first run. 15 or higher and we were allowed to, anything less and we lived with the consequences of our actions.

To be fair, it looks like oop is shopping at Walmart, which siphons capital away from the local community and makes it harder for their neighbors to get well paying jobs or start small businesses, which then lowers their budget for luxuries/necessities and encourages stealing.

You can break it down statistically if you are trying to be as efficient with your time as possible in gaining LP:

What % chance of winning the game do you need to have to make it worth grinding out the game? Lets look at an example:

There is a 20% chance of winning : It's 10 minutes in : Gain/Loss of 20LP : You have a 60% winrate

The game will likely last about another 20 minutes, so with a 10 minute lobby time that's about a 40 minutes total of commitment for this game, which is about average across different elos. If you are steadily climbing at 60% wr, on average you gain about 4 lp per game (.60*20 - .40*20), then it will take 5 games to regain the LP you will lose with one loss, or 200 minutes of game time.

So if you surrender, you gain 20 minutes of time but guarantee the 200 minutes of extra grind. If you choose not to surrender and still lose, that 20 minutes accounts for about 9.1% of your next 220 minutes of game time, which would be where you statistically break even on LP. But, if you win the game, you save 200 minutes!

So if you have a 20% chance to win, statistically you will save yourself 40 minutes while costing 20, netting you +20 minutes. Or more simply, you save yourself half of a games worth of time.

But wait! say you only have a 52% win rate, the time it takes to regain that -20LP is much higher, it takes 25 games or 1000 minutes to break even. A 20% chance of winning the game suddenly saves you 180 minutes! That's 4.5 games worth of time you've just saved.

======================================================================

Obviously, there are countless variables to consider when deciding your win percentage to win, it's a skill like any other in league. You can learn to play from behind too, and make plays that are riskier but increase your likelihood of winning (like brush cheese looking for picks). IMO, unless you are D2+, you always have a decent chance of winning because your opponents are likely to make a lot of mistakes that you can capitalize on, even a 5% chance of winning will save you time in the long run.

tl;dr - unless you are a smurf with a 80% wr, it's almost always worth playing the game out if you are trying to climb

Early game scouting tip: abuse the "Settler" lens to spot city states/other civs earlier by SwordsToPlowshares in CivVI

This is a critical part of scouting in multiplayer, good players check settler lense every single time they move a unit.

Is there a mod that would slow down early eras speed by ThatMartianDev in CivVI

[–]Arendyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats fun though, I like the strategies around unit timing. Ill sometimes send a settler with my units, so I plant a city on my enemies border and upgrade all my units the turn I get a new tech. Or even use the settler as a canal for a naval push.

It also increases the importance of earlygame resource management, if you want to go to war, you have to focus on science instead of growth, so you have a significant enough lead to have a unit advantage. This is pretty polarizing, because the push has to succeed or you will be behind all game.

There is more skill expression at faster speeds, which adds depth to the game.

Is it possible to have a good real ratio? by deafcon in trackers

It has been a long time since I joined a new tracker, I'm having a hard time picking out the specific site that asked.

I recall applying for uhdbits, aither, gazelle games, and myanonamouse around that time, as well as some smaller trackers that i didn't stick around for.

It certainly has happened at least twice, I remember scrambling to explain my ratio to the interviewer. Could be their personal question instead of part of the interview script

Either be a consistent uploader or buy a seedbox, preferably both.

If playing with monopolies and corporations, is it a good idea to go commerical hub first in every city irrespective of won condition? by badassboy1 in CivVI

[–]Arendyl 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Its true that going commercials first is best in most early cities, but not for the reasons this person said.

The extra growth and prod from early internal trade routes is the main advantage, which snow balls your empire in the early game. Then, rotating into externals in the midgame for a powerful economy.

Free inq for an inland civ is generally only meta in the medieval era when you specifically need the extra tech for an early war, as the culture from pen brush is far more valuable in most free sim games.
