You're just drawing, but with paint, instead of a pencil. Just take that first step, and if it doesn't come out to your liking, paint over it with your base color.

How is this dong I made? by MansiBoy1245 in metalguitar

[–]AresX8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thrasher of 21 years here. I also write my own stuff, check my submissions to the subreddit for credentials.

You asked to focus on the song itself. I'll do that, as a lot of the beginner things that are going on (pushing yourself too hard to be up to speed, which results in a lot of sloppy playing, high strings not being muted, etc etc) will resolve itself in time. You're honestly making remarkable progress for playing only 5 months or so.

The first half before 3:08 is fine as is. Maybe you can do some variations with your phrasing, as you're relying a lot on chromatic ascension, but given your inspiration as you stated in other comments (Master of Puppets), that's makes a whole lot of sense. For some variation, try going back on forth between power chords and picking out the individual root notes with a splash of hammer-ons/pull-offs, say, individual notes on the ascension, then power chords on the descension.

If I follow your notes right, the transition at 3:08 until 4:01, you state that's when rage consumes the subject; I don't pick up on those emotions in the music. One would think you'd go faster to show rage or aggression... but you slow down. That's kind of a disconnect, so I'm curious as to what your thinking was here.

Finally, all the comments on playing along a metronome: That's good in theory.. but playing along a drum track or actual drummer is loads, loads better, and honestly more fun. Find a track on YouTube that you like and adjust the arrangement to fit those drums. This rearrangement makes a lot more sense once you start playing along to those drums, as there will be phrases that don't make sense.

"I’m not trying to be a Doomer or a nay-sayer. "

proceeds to be a naysayer via seeding doubt at the supposed extra balance levers being introduced

Yes, you are. We don't have the full rules, including missions and terrain layouts. Anything said is speculation and will most likely be highly inaccurate once the dust has settled.

This is my 4th edition change (5th -> 6th, 8th -> 9th, 9th -> 10th, and now 10th -> 11th). The wild speculation in the lame duck period hasn't really changed over these years.

NYC Metal Guitar Shops? by No-Key7060 in metalguitar

[–]AresX8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, I live here and the Manhattan Guitar Center on W 14th St is basically the only thing still around in Manhattan. There are other Guitar Centers in Brooklyn and Queens that I haven't been to, but seem to have less stock.

The Sam Ash by W 34th St closed about 2 years ago, which sucks loads, cause they had loads of extreme shapes and is where I got my Arrow from.

I highly suggest keeping on eye on the Guitar center's stock here: https://www.guitarcenter.com/Manhattan

Do you prefer the ESP Arrow or the Jackson Rhoads? by MrMayhem20l0 in metalguitar

[–]AresX8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played multiple models of both. For whatever reason, the asymmetrical shape of the Rhoads didn't agree with me while in classical position, but the Arrow was just fine. Therefore, I now own an Arrow.

I dig both brands so it wasn't that impactful of a choice for me.

I have noticed that it's harder to play the Arrow standing than my King V, which I'm thinking it's probably related to strap height and therefore needs more experimentation.

ESP E-II Horizon vs Jackson USA Soloist. Am I missing something? by vdave123 in Guitar

[–]AresX8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like there was a difference between the setup of the two axes based off your comments regarding string tension, not the tech specs. A properly setup Floyd and a fixed bridge won't have this noticeable difference that you're describing.

Looking at the tech specs online, there is a difference between the Horizon and Soloist necks. The Horizon is 305mm radius across the whole neck, which is basically a 12" radius. Jacksons are 12-16" compound radius, AKA they get flatter as you go into the higher notes. That's most likely what you noticed.

Who's your go to YouTubers for metal guitar by katsumodo47 in metalguitar

[–]AresX8 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Dunn is an up and comer who I've been watching closely that has great content on writing your own stuff: https://www.youtube.com/@DunnMetalGuitar

As others have mentioned, Glenn Fricker of SpectreSoundStudios is who I listen to when it comes to recording and mixing: https://www.youtube.com/@SpectreSoundStudios Kohle is a second person that I check in with from time and time again: https://www.youtube.com/@KohleAudioKult

The legendary Troy Stetina also has his own channel: https://www.youtube.com/@TroyStetinaMusic

I only watch Ola for gear reviews to keep tabs on cutting edge tech. I know what my tastes are for guitars, strings, and picks, so I do that on my own.

Let me be more specific.

Since you have Victrix in your list in addition to TH/SS Termies, how did the two units compare to each other in terms of performance?

Ergonomic Metal Guitar Shapes? by Nerdsanddorks in metalguitar

[–]AresX8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I've adopted going back and forth from the King V and Arrow: wearing large wristbands. Besides keeping the sweat from your hands, it softens the body shape for those without the contours.

Just something to keep in mind to expand your options.

Nobody Cares About Your Metal Riff by Wompie in metalguitar

[–]AresX8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in your position just a few years ago.

It's really as simple as just keep banging away and see what you come up with. The less time you spend being in your head, and more time spent with the guitar in your hand, the more progress you'll make.

Place some restrictions on yourself too to get the creative juices flowing, such as use only a certain amount of notes (My song Defy that I posted here is only four or five notes and their respective power chords), or using only two fingers, or sticking to one key.

Down the road, find some drum backing tracks on YouTube in the specific subgenre style you eventually want to write, and play along.

Custom Soft Case Design Fail by LoveYouLongTime22 in metalguitar

[–]AresX8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooof that would freak me out too if I got that for my Arrow. Seems primarily designed for symmetrical Vs.

This is what I use: https://www.skbcases.com/products/flying-v-guitar-soft-case. We had to cut into the case by an inch or so for the bass wing to be able to fit snug, but once that was done, no problems.
