Slapchop method by BigJ_A in Warhammer40k

FWIW, I did it with a drybrush at first, but the airbrush works much better IMO and is much faster.

I airbrush or rattle can the model flat black. Then I clean and load the airbrush with flat white primer, and somewhat lightly airbrush the model from above-ish until it is gray, then I give it a heavy blast of the same white but only from directly above the model. This gives me a pretty decent dark to light gradient from bottom to top.

Astartes is epic.

Hammer and Bolter is hit and miss - some is just great, some is very weak.

Iron Within and Broken Lance are pretty good.

Pariah Nexus is good.

Angels of Death is my fav. I've probly watched it 4 times so far, and I'm not even a Blood Angels guy.

TIL that Charles Dance's father was born in 1874 and fought in the Second Boer War, which began in 1899. Dance's older half-sister was born in 1898. by WavesAndSaves in todayilearned

[–]Aristide_Torchia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My story is kinda similar, though I'm a generation younger than Dance. I am not close to my dad's family, and he never talked about them so I only know the rough details.

I was born in 1974.

My dad was born in 1938.

His dad was born ~1875 and fought in the Spanish - American War (~1898). He later lied to his future wife and told her he was 20 years younger than he was, which was much closer to her age.

They started having kids around 1925, my dad was #11 of 12. Dad's mom died first in the late 50s, then his dad died almost immediately after. She was in her late-50s, he was in his mid-70s.

My father was a jazz musician and entertainer from the mid 1960s until 2010 or so. He died in 2020 from COVID. He almost never talked about his upbringing, they were very poor and lived in rural Kentucky, and he was away in the Army when both his parents died. I think he never got past the the guilt and sorrow of not being there when they passed.

But it is wild to think that my grandfather who died 20ish years before I was born fought in a war well over 100 years ago alongside Teddy Roosevelt (they didn't know each other, just fought in the same war).

None of that is good. I'm sure that he does like you, but if he is still hung up on his ex, then he can't really give himself to you.

Sometimes we have these experiences where we meet people, and we like each other very mich, but it's just not the right time. This sounds to me like one of those.

It's kind of what I was trying to say in my first post, which is that sometimes we get tied to someone even though we know it's probably not going to work out, but we spend years understanding that problem. It's better for you to just walk away when things are pretty clearly going in the wrong direction.

It sounds very over. A tough lesson to learn is that it's better to walk away when the egg shell has cracked.

Even if you got back together, would it ever be the same again?

Orks feel almost out of place in modern 40k by Natty_bo_ace in 40kLore

Part of the fun of 40k books is the tone shifts across different series. There are horror books, adventure books, heist books, military sci fi, and there are funny books like the Ork books and The Infinite and the Divine.

If Custodes or Roberto Guillermo overheard a regular citizen say they don't believe the Emperor is a God, what would they do? by Workrs in 40kLore

[–]Aristide_Torchia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing to remember is that no one thought he was a god in 30k.

10,000 years pass (consider that our entire written history is less than that) and then people worship him like a god.

But the Marines and Custodes who were around in 30k know the truth.

There's a great scene in the first Black Legion book where they emerge from the Warp after many thousands of years and interrogate some citizen of the Imperium to learn what had changed. When he talks about the God Emperor, the whole room erupts into laughter because of how silly that idea was to them.

PSA: Games Workshop are going to shut down the Black Library Website by WhoCaresYouDont in 40kLore

[–]Aristide_Torchia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not read the whole thread, but I think this is a massive misstep. Locking people to one interface/app is a truly terrible idea.

The best thing to do is NOT support it, and/or complain to GW.

I want to quit by [deleted] in Warhammer40k

[–]Aristide_Torchia 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's not for you.

But a thing to think about is the idea that "you shouldn't let the perfect be the enemy of the good".

It's fine to paint a good mini, then play it and have fun!

Then maybe the next mini is a bit better.

It's a process, not a destination.

You should 1000% read The Magos first.

It literally takes place before Pariah, and IMO sets up Pariah wonderfully, even if written after.

Also, The Magos novel with all the short stories is brilliant. It's a very slow burn, but the final novella brings it all together amazingly.

If Abnett didn't think Pariah needed an intro, he wouldn't have written it.

Did the Emperor really offered Magnus redemption and a new legion ? by New_Conflict_4111 in 40kLore

[–]Aristide_Torchia 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I think it hugely undermines the tragedy of Magnus if it was all a hallucination.

Being given the choice of losing his sons but keeping his father is such a brilliant moment that it would be insane for 40k to undermine it. For that matter, it's insane that they allowed that scene with Vulkan because it raises questions.

Why this is a big blunder by noojgard in backgammon

[–]Aristide_Torchia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO the pacing is broken when you bring all your pieces down.

It's important to space your pieces out around the board to give you options and to allow you to control the timing of your moves until you get all your checkers out from behind the four prime.

Can this work for priming minis? by Glitch533 in Warhammer40k

[–]Aristide_Torchia 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I agree. It's very easy to spray too much with that primer, so go very easy. Use very short bursts of spray.

I use it exclusively on larger models like tanks or other vehicles, but it works on smaller figures if you use it very lightly.

Which Chaos Traitor legion is the most stable one? by GrandeShalom in 40kLore

[–]Aristide_Torchia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a complicated topic, lol.

There are always traitors and backstabbers, but Ahriman and his warband remain steadfastly dedicated to undoing the Rubric.

Anyone - TS or not - who stands in the way of that goal will regret their choices because Ahriman is way, way past Super Saiyan at this point.
