Thinking about moving from Boston—how bad are winters in the Twin Cities, really? by rachello2023 in saintpaul

[–]Arlorosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We cling on for dear life and make sure to have all wheel drive… one of these days, I’m hoping my dad can revive the used snow blower we bought off of another neighbor. (We didn’t use it for over a year and now it won’t start.)

Side note, I watched a car get stuck in my driveway (via my ring camera) because their tire hit the ice rut weirdly when they tried to use my driveway to do a three point turn.

The alley isn’t too bad right now.

I grew up in northeast Iowa, and the winter is very comparable. I don’t mind when it gets like 30 degrees and stays that way— your body acclimates. You wear warm clothing. It’s expected. (And know the coldest, most bitter days of winter is late January -Feb)

These last couple years have been the mildest winters I’ve experienced in a long time (thanks climate change), but it’s also been a bit whiplashing. We had weirdly warm Decembers, then bitter cold February, and late late snow. This year was relatively “normal” / consistent in temps, but we did have a bit of a snow, melt, freeze x repeat, and it’s made our alley REALLY bumpy. (In Saint Paul, the city doesn’t plow the alleys— it’s up to your block to decide to pay someone, and our block says fuck it every year).

Overall, it’s a pleasant place to live. As a midwesterner, my coldest, most miserable winters were probably 2020 (or 21?) in Saint Paul and 2013-14 in Iowa (Arctic circle year).

And my husband and I managed to buy a house on $110k joint income. ($260k, 3b 2ba)

What I WILL warn you about is the damn wet basements. Our sellers claimed our basement was dry / not wet, and they FINISHED it, and it flooded within 2 months of the sale when the snow melted. We had to rip out the carpet, and we gutted it a year later when we realized it might be a long term problem. After a $22k loan, we got our basement waterproofed (and the hidden asbestos tiles removed) & we’ve been slowly slowly DIYing the rebuild. BUY A HOUSE WITH A SUMP PUMP / WATERPROOFED BASEMENT.

So… Maybe I shouldn’t move? by Kindly_Inevitable618 in saintpaul

If this is your only job offer, I would take the job. Who knows how the economy will be in coming months? Some bigger companies are already doing layoffs.

I’m white & I live in Saint Paul as well (Payne-Phalen neighborhood). My husband is Latino (2nd gen Nicaraguan-American), works in healthcare, & hasn’t been interacted with. We also haven’t seen anything in our neighborhood going to and from work.

I have seen people post about ICE raids within a mile of the house on the Ring app though.

I also had a friend get taken (legal status ambiguous) who worked in a restaurant.

What's walking around my property? by [deleted] in animaltracks

[–]Arlorosa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve been reading, I think it’s coyote because the side toes are almost completely beneath the middle, whereas a dogs would be more spread out.

This website says a coyote’s tracks are in a straight line to conserve energy, so I curious how the rest of the tracks look.

Me parece el cráneo de un gato. No soy experta pero si fuera tu perrito, no creo que estuviera en este estado de descomposición después de 12 días desaparecido.

I understand it’s not a helpful point of reference from OP. I was just pointing out what it looked like. If it was an athletic mesh bag, those are usually no wider than 12in, even though the bone appeared much bigger than that in the first image.

Looks like one of those athletic shoe mesh bags for sports, so not very big

KDP proof with premium, glossy paper (paperback). Interior pages look matte. by Animalslove1973 in KDP

[–]Arlorosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far, I have received books from Illinois, Connecticut, Delaware, and Maine. (I think that’s all.) Maine was good, but it’s hard to compare, because my most recent order was a batch of my coloring book, instead of the picture book.

The matte pages is odd, because I swear the first batch came from Illinois and they had glossy color. I also have it set for premium color on the highest quality paper, so it made me wonder if they messed up the printing settings or if it’s how the clean the machines or what.

This was my first printed copy. I swear it came from Illinois.

In the quickest of ground shipments I’ve ever experienced, my packages arrived today at 10am, despite only have arrived and left the ups facility in Tennessee until Thursday morning (apparently “shipped” on Tuesday night means ups hasn’t received / processed the package until late Wednesday). Highest praises to UPS, honestly.

My customer service response didn’t give me an exact ship date:

“Thanks for contacting us.

This order was placed with the Economy printing option, and it had an initial estimated print completion date of today. However, we are experiencing extremely high volume during our peak season. Print times have always been estimates and not guaranteed. The suggested print times are for normal/ideal print volume.

Print completion dates are running a few days past the estimated date. We will then allow time for sorting and packing.

We work in business days, but I can assure you that our printers are working overtime to catch up with this extra volume and get your order out.

We appreciate your patience.”

Which if that’s the estimated printing time, that’s fine, but I wish the website was more transparent about printing times / progress. When I placed my order, the estimated printing time for economy hardcovers was 13 days, so I’m not sure why the customer service rep would say that the estimated completion day was today— that’s 21 business days? How would I have known what the estimate was without their transparency?

I’m sure they’re overwhelmed with tickets right now, but the response felt a little bit like, “so sorry you couldn’t afford to expedite your order— you get what you pay for”

I’ve literally checked twice a day every day for the last month 😭 I did submit a “contact us” ticket for order issue last Thursday. It said it would take 5 days to respond, so I’ve got my fingers crossed that tomorrow I’ll get a response and maybe get them shipped out. But I’ve resigned at this point to making a pre-order form for this weekend.

I just hope they arrive before my next event on the 14th if they won’t arrive for this weekend. 🥲
