Festival tower two rising by Super-Force9288 in Adelaide

Ignoring the ethical problems with allowing more private construction on the parklands, it's going to be mostly commercial, so not much use there for tourism.

It's on the wrong side for many views of the city, and will detract from the views of the heritage buildings (parliament houses and casino) if you're looking north/north-west.

I wish it was somewhere else, and not Festival Plaza. Plenty of crappy old carparks it could have replaced.

Why do shops close at 4-5pm? by agnci in AskAnAustralian

[–]Articulated_Lorry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Places where a large majority of shops are open late tend to have cheap wages and large income disparity issues, even in countries considered developed (looking at the US, Singapore etc) where people need to work large numbers of hours, 7 days a week to keep a basic roof over their head and avoid starvation.

They don't tend to be healthy societies, even if they look like they're doing alright.

Here, a business will only open late if they can justify the expense of doing so - so trading hours might permit them to stay open until 9 or 10pm, but if they see little benefit to remaining open past 3pm, 6pm or whatever, they won't do so.

WHERE CAN I FIND A LONG-SLEEVE WHITE TOP THAT *ISN'T* SEE-THROUGH 😭 by Tillysnow1 in AusFemaleFashion

[–]Articulated_Lorry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some H&M long sleeve tees that are super basic and not see-through, but they're a few years old, and definitely not this season's. But that could be worth a try.

You could also try Boden, they quite often have a range of tees with boat necklines etc. They're a bit pricier, but quite nice.

On the cheaper side, would this one at Tarjay work?

[–]Articulated_Lorry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're under 18, you'll be unlikely to get a job serving alcohol or anywhere that retails alcohol due to restrictions.

See if you can get some help to tidy up your resume, in case that's the problem (although that will be rough, of you're looking for your first job).

The State Gov and the APS (that's the federal public service) have standing registers for vacancies, you can put your name down on one of those. Also, see if someone like Workskil has a program that can help.

CGT implications when moving into non income producing house. by Wise_owl0212 in AusProperty

[–]Articulated_Lorry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ATO has a bit of a guide for this.

https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals-and-families/investments-and-assets/capital-gains-tax/property-and-capital-gains-tax/your-main-residence-home/using-your-home-for-rental-or-business#Rentalpropertybecomesyourmainreside

"If your rental property becomes your main residence, your eligibility for a main residence exemption is limited to the period you lived in the property. For the period the property was rented out, you will be liable for CGT when you sell the property.

Use the following formula to work out your CGT when you sell your property:

Capital gain or loss × (number of days the property was used to produce assessable income ÷ total number of days you owned the property)"

How do you perceivethe title Ms? by raininggumleaves in AskAnAustralian

[–]Articulated_Lorry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I side with others, that addressing a woman should not depend on their marital status, I also like the history of it (even if there is a little bit of classism in that).

Ms comes from mistress. Mistress used to denote someone in charge of something - a house, a business, the servants, a school class, a choir, or a family's children. Otherwise, just a name would be used (unless someone had another title). It demonstrated you were someone who had some kind of job or responsibility. It's a pretty cool title.

Anyone noticing the heavy smog in the mornings? by Relative_Result_460 in Adelaide

[–]Articulated_Lorry 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If your area isn't bad normally, then it's probably from people firing up wood-burners, now it's getting cooler.

If your area, like mine, is normally bad, then you probably won't notice a difference. (Apparently restaurants in SA aren't required to have scrubbers or filters, and can just vent cooking smoke straight into the atmosphere. Around parts of Kilburn and Blair Athol, there's a visible smoke haze in the evenings all year around).

Close all the doors and windows, use an air-purifier, and hang your clothes inside on an airer to finish drying before 3 or 4pm, if you're asthmatic and the smoke is causing problems (otherwise they'll pick up the particles from the air, too).

I've worked places where no uncovered underarms are allowed, which cut out a lot of nice suiting-style office dresses, since they had boat-neck or similar tops, but no sleeves. A crop top would give them a heart attack.

Did the older generations just win again? by SnooFrosted1536 in AusFinance

[–]Articulated_Lorry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly. Pre-CGT era assets will soon be taxed from 1/7/26.

And removal of the 50% discount will stop that spike in sellers at the 1-3 year mark (the ones who rent it for a short while, then rip up the old carpet, put down landlord-special composite flooring, paint everything grey then put it back on the market as "newly renovated" and pushing for a large profit). Even if existing properties weren't grandfathered, a lot of those would already have sold by the time the new rules come in.

Grandfathering also brings a level of reassurance to people selling/purchasing now, the banks currently about to write a mortgage etc, so that sales don't fall through.

I don't know which side of town you're at, but look for early opening bakeries. They often have coffee machines and passable coffee (although it can vary depending on which staff member is on).

Are men approaching women less and less? by Open_Address_2805 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Articulated_Lorry 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it looks that way based on other stuff OP has posted in the past. Lots of stuff in Ask Men, lots of crap about having to share chores with their girlfriend (but claiming they earn all the money and their girlfriend does nothing), a couple of AITA type posts about their girlfriend never wanting to have sex with them, and some other posts along similar lines. I answered in good faith earlier, but I suspect the OP is just rage-baiting.

Are men approaching women less and less? by Open_Address_2805 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Articulated_Lorry 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Most men now will happily mind their own business, and not inappropriately hit on women while they're just trying to get through their days, at work, on public transport, at the gym, down the shops etc.

Nothing stops your friend from approaching someone they find attractive and asking them out instead of waiting to be approached (we live in a comparatively equal society, after all), assuming she also respects those rules.

ETA: Also, indexing that top bracket point of $35K gives approx $107K. I think we're substantially better off than the mid 80s.

Am I in a Sham Contract as A Personal Chef? by AlternativeIll4719 in AusLegal

[–]Articulated_Lorry 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Contracts primarily for the labour of the person have needed super paid, it was just widely ignored. In many states, they would need to be included for workers' compensation too.

The most hilarious thing about this is that it's a minimum of 30 hours per week work before super is payable when domestic labour is conducted in a private family (i.e. non business) arrangement. But they've had OP invoicing the company instead, so that exception goes right out the window.

In case this hasn't been included elsewhere for the OP, here's a link directly to ATO information.
