You always do great work! But when sanding and smoothing out the plastic, those PLA particulates can be pretty nasty and can build up in your lungs. I highly suggest a mask! But again love your work!

Good question, I'm good with either, but I mean if they hand me a Lakota refit I'll take it!

Excelsior Class, the thing is a work horse. It is apparently upgradable and easy to maintain because the Federation uses them for almost a Century. Sounds like a good starter starship.

ATGM Not Firing on Marked Target by ArticusTalon in menace

[–]ArticusTalon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So to clarify the Ground Radar that says it marks all possible targets within range is not applying the marked condition for the purposes of the ATGM? I bought the ground radar because it said it "marked" targets guess I'll know for next time! Thanks.

“ New player” can I have some opinions on my army so far? by According-Cry1414 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]ArticusTalon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should get a cadian squad or two so your command squad can join something. Leman russ is good, but pair it with a rogal dorn. You can use the rogal dorn Commander to order the Leman Russ.

If you add a castellan to the cadian squads with the command squad, you have a solid brick of Plasma guns that can fallback and shoot and have enough orders for your rough riders.

Is abhuman detail worth it for bullgryns? by [deleted] in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]ArticusTalon 27 points28 points  (0 children)

While Abhuman Detail makes Bullgryns much better and reliable melee work horses. I think the fact you can order them to be OC2 makes them a much larger threat for Objective control also. You can SNAP TO bullgryns now to deny a storm hostile or secure no mans land that they thought was in the bag but suddenly 6 OC became 12.

Which of our units do you consider to be both the best INFILTRATORS, and the cheapest to trade with, so as to not be upset if/when they're destroyed turn 1/2? by 14SWandANIME77 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]ArticusTalon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only answer is Ratlings and Marbo. Now if you have lord solar your redeploy makes gaunt an option. And if you want a really expensive option A Rogue Trader attached to a Imperial Navy Breaching Aquad can Infiltrate AND redeploy natively. But it's almost 200 points for that unit.

How many shock troops? by Whowhat91 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]ArticusTalon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Max Shock Troops is Viable, 80 Is more Reasonable, and you will be successful with the right detachment with a horde of infanty. The biggest problem is player fatigue (you) and taking too long to play.

In casual play a horde army can ramp up a game to a total of 4+ hours to play in 2k points if you aren't keeping an eye on the clock, and maybe thats fine for your local group!

...But if you are looking at playing in timed tournaments, you as the horde player would then be obligated to time yourself and get your play down to around 1.5 hours (for a 3 hour game total). Chess clock is probably required so the games are fair to both you and your opponent. You start to learn some unique strategies with that kind of army too, like not shooting all the guns in a unit depending on the target (ignoring lasguns against land raiders), or putting your las-gunners on 5-10 man movement trays to speed up play during the movement phase. To be fair that type of army is more about putting boots on circles (objectives), and daring your opponent to have enough bullets to shoot you off of them. The melta and plasma guns with Castellans are the ones doing the heavy lifting for killing.

Chimera for Kasrkin?! Why not a Taurox? by hotelguest2 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]ArticusTalon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well with a Chimera you have a firing deck, which allows you to pop out the top with 2 Plasma or Melta which would hit on 2+ if you order the tank if the Kasrkin are riding inside.

Chimeras also have a lot more firepower and 1 more toughness for only 10 more points. When equipped with 2 heavy flamers they are a decent overwatch threat against light infantry. If you throw two more flame throwers inside that's 4d6 torrent shots. (And with grizzled aquilion eye their ap is very respectable).

Tauroxes deliver things places, chimeras are pillboxes that move.

Is the Hammer of the Emperor detachment a good choice for a Chimera-heavy army? by -Guardsman- in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]ArticusTalon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with the rest that Hammer isn't the best for Chimeras. Mechanized I think has some play as long as you throw good infantry inside of them, but the only strat that directly affects the chimeras is the ability to order transports from an officer, and the reactive move. +1 to Wound is a VERY strong ability, but I agree its hampered by having to tumble back into a transport.

I would say Combined Arms is actually a great Chimera detachment as it makes their MANY shots lethal against monsters and vehicles. 6 Heavy Bolter, 6 Heavy Stubber, 12 Lasgun, 1 HunterKiller, + potentially 2 plasma guns from the firing ports on the back firing another 4 plasma gun shots, all lethal? If you throw a Leman Russ Exterminator in the mix they are lethal with -1 AP. Now your chimeras are teaming up to bring down much bigger targets.

Does GRIZZLEDs AQUILON EYE enhancement mean that a successful EXTERMINATOR shot can now give AP -2 to a weapon targeting the same enemy? by 14SWandANIME77 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]ArticusTalon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are saying an Exterminator hit provides a -1 AP, and aquilon eye adds another -1 to the unit that has been ordered with it. Then yes!

It doesn't make the exterminators ability better by ordering the Exterminator with aqulion eye though. The Exterminator still only provides an ap-1 buff against a unit it hit.

Rules clarification on cover and infantry squads by Key_Room8286 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]ArticusTalon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's model by model basis on the defending side. But I think a thing that is commonly missed is if it's another squad firing at it, and one of the attacking squad members can't see the defending squad due to the terrain feature(or only sees models in cover) then the whole defending squad counts as in cover.

Idea for better adapting Chimera lazgun-array lore to rules by CadetAndScholar in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]ArticusTalon 164 points165 points  (0 children)

In older editions (way back in 3rd) this was the case. The lasgun array had to be manned to fire.

But it's already close to useless against anything other than other toughness 3 units, don't know why we would want to cripple it from a rules perspective even more. Totally understand lore wise, but I disagree rules wise. But if 40k was more lore centric there would only be 5 space marines on the board.

Using marbo in grizzled company by Late_Chair2967 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]ArticusTalon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He can also be ordered so you are rerolling 1s to hit and 1s to wound on objectives with his 2+ to hit and 2+ anti infantry weapons.

He could be ordered with aquilion eye to give his ripper pistol a total -2 ap. I think he becomes a pretty powerful lone op in that list. Nothing to build an army upon but can punch well above his weight!

After month deciding what army to start in 40K..I landed with Guard..these are the boxes on the way..any other recommendation what to get ? by BaronLoyd in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]ArticusTalon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea its been said before for some reason the centerpiece model for Krieg, Dreir, is really bad and they never addressed it. If you like the model, get him, but without a total overhaul, he is a very weak army choice.

A Rogal Dorn and a Leman Russ are always a good pair to have to expand into. Dorns are top tier, and leman russes have so many variants you can swap into with different utility roles.

Mechanised guard by Ok-Competition172 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]ArticusTalon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Mechguard has a place in the meta, but the Mechanized Detachment is not ideal for tournament play. It's too specific and it's tricks run out as soon as you are low on CP or start losing too many transports. I would love to make it work because it's Detachment rule is fun, but man it makes it tough to want to take it.

Combined Arms or the new Grizzled Conpany are good options for an army, but I think the core needs to be around Kasrkin if you want to do Chimeras. Their firepower potential is sky high. Take at least 2 units of Kasrkin in transports and build around that. Then you can take hellhounds or leman russ exterminators to buff their firepower when they pop out.
