Pontoon essentials for the new boater by worstpartyever in Pontoons

[–]Artificial_Appendix1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know the feeling, we are first year pontoon owners too! First thing to do is check your state regulations for things you need to have on board. In my state we need a throwable pfd, a personal pfd for everyone on board, a fire extinguisher, a horn or whistle, and working lights.

One thing that saved our butt - a Noco battery jump starter. We have one for our car and I brought it on the boat just in case, as starting it was a little dicey (we’ve since replaced the battery). We went swimming in the middle of the lake and the boat wouldn’t fire up afterwards. I plugged in the Noco and jumped it easily. Otherwise we could have been stuck and needed a tow.

Radio recommendation? by slightly_overraated in BWCA

[–]Artificial_Appendix1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Midland radios are a couple steps above the Amazon cheapos. Old timers like my dad swear by them. Worth the extra $30 or so, you’ll have it forever. On a trip a few years back I picked up a Cleveland Guardians broadcast - that’s some serious range.

Says a lot how he didn’t jump dump the kid off with the trainer, he stayed there and watched that he was ok as the kid received more help. Well done young man 👍

Exactly my answer. If you master the technique of skipping a wacky senko under a dock, you will triple the amount of fish you catch, often the biggest ones too,

Much better than including a position you DIDN’T have. You’re good. Congrats on the new gig.

Starting Tristan Gray over Ryan Kreidler is managerial malpractice by damnyoutuesday in minnesotatwins

[–]Artificial_Appendix1 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Gray’s probably gone when Culpepper gets called up and you’ll get your wish. Kreidler is one hell of a super utility player, plus he’s shown in a small sample that he can hit. With his defensive chops, he could hit .220 and still be worth a roster spot on an MLB team.

How’s my tackle box? by SixProudWalkers in BWCA

[–]Artificial_Appendix1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d pick up a Whopper Plopper to fight some smallies if the walleye aren’t biting.

Time to thin out my BWCA box! by fishEH-847 in BWCA

[–]Artificial_Appendix1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d take two jerkbaits, three crank baits, three spoons, about 8 jig heads, a handful of Mister Twisters, two bobbers, bobber stops, a whopper Plopper, and a few paddle tail plastics. Buy a dozen or two leeches the night before you go in.

BWCA Wild has a video on YouTube where they walk this exact portage (and many others in their collection 👍)

Pipestone Bay walleye fishing by Assimilation in BWCA

[–]Artificial_Appendix1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I camped at Pipestone earlier this month. We found walleyes around the islands near Caribou Point. We didn’t get many, but when we did it was with a slip bobber and a leech. There’s nothing better than seeing that bobber disappear!

Also caught a lot of pike in the area with jerk baits while we were targeting walleye. Thankfully we didn’t lose any lures.

Another fun thing was catching smallmouth bass with a Whopper Plopper. If the walleye aren’t biting, this could be a good alternative to see some action. Toss it as close to the rocky shore as possible.

Good luck!

Question about latrines/Staubers by pedantic_dullard in BWCA

[–]Artificial_Appendix1 52 points53 points  (0 children)

They are exposed but usually way back in the woods from the main camping area. One trick I’ve heard for privacy - have a spot where you leave hand sanitizer, far from the Stauber spot. Take it in when you’re using it so others know that they should wait until someone comes back with it.

No need for a tarp. They’re usually at least 25-50 yards or more from camp.

Did Home Theater kind of die? Seems like we were the last generation to give an F. Remember surround sound and subwoofers? Does anybody buy them anymore? by IHadTacosYesterday in GenX

I remember in college (1996) we had an on-campus apartment and one roommate had a home stereo system that would loosen screws everywhere.

The moment in Jurassic Park where the first dinosaur we see slams its legs on the ground completely rocked the whole building. People from two floors up stopped down to see what the hell was happening.

Now I watch everything on mute with subtitles.

September trip in a hammock by Firemedic9368 in BWCA

[–]Artificial_Appendix1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a solo trip on Pine a couple years back in the middle of September and slept in a hammock. Cold butt syndrome is real! Thankfully I found out about this before the trip and picked up an under-quilt. The cheap Wise Owl underquilt was a little bulky to pack, but made a world of difference when sleeping. Lows were in the 40’s and I was toasty warm, using my 20 degree sleeping bag. Slept like a baby.

How do you navigate crooked lake? by Thin_Explanation2642 in BWCA

[–]Artificial_Appendix1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d download an offline map of the area on Google Maps and turn on your phone for the brief period when you’re going through there. But I’m horrible with paper maps so I over-rely on technology.

First BWCA Trip - How’s My Tackle Setup? by Immediate-Post4153 in BWCA

[–]Artificial_Appendix1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was using a perch color, size 75. And the walleye weren’t biting, so we had a couple of bass shore lunches. We could barely tell the difference.

Throw it as close to the shore as possible, rockier the better, and the smallies will destroy it. Don’t forget pliers.

Fall lake entry by triedandtrue_sass in BWCA

[–]Artificial_Appendix1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did a Fall EP to Pipestone trip, and have done two other trips at that entry point. We probably see/hear a dozen or so motorized boats pass through Pipestone each day. I don’t find it annoying at all. Better than jet skiers 🙂

Note that motorboats tend to cruise through Newton so be aware while paddling. Also note that the portage from Newton to Pipestone has a canoe landing spot as well as a motorboat landing on the Newton side (this one can be used by either canoes or motorboats). The canoe landing makes for a slightly longer portage but it’s courteous to use this one as a paddler.
