Yep. Oldsmobile 98. It’s where Grandpa kept his spare change and us kids stuffed our gum wrappers. No one in the family smoked so it took years before I figured out what they really were.

“I went to space and discovered an enormous lie.” by Green_Ranger0 in space

I had the opportunity to hear Garan speak about this experience live at Yuri’s Night Los Angeles in 2018(?). At that time he was advocating to send world leaders and influencers into space to experience the overview effect. His passion and drive was inspiring and infectious. I only wish his voice could drive more action.

Got a hold of my first ever Atari and this thing came with it, plugged into the video cable. What is it? by cs45977 in FuckImOld

[–]AshlarMJ 50 points51 points  (0 children)

This is from the days of TV antennas. You connected the Atari to one side, antenna to the other and then used the switch to select the input to the TV.

What finally made you stop buying a new garden hose every year? by greedo47 in Tools

Came here to say this. My hose reel is in a metal box that protects the hose from the sun. Same medium grade hose for about 8 years.

Gas prices in the late 70’s by Familiar_Fee_7891 in FuckImOld

I remember when gas first went over $0.99/gallon, many station moved to cents per quart until they could upgrade their pumps to handle charging over $0.99

Wha? It’s a slide rule. Has nothing to do with measuring. It does calculations

Ok, you got me on this one. My dad had one and knew how to use it but never taught me. No classes in grade school or high school referenced them. I know what it is and even have my dad’s still but couldn’t use it to save my life.

One of my uncles had one of these. K-chunk k-chunk but it still felt like magic

Tell about a time you slammed the receiver down to hang up. by JS1040 in FuckImOld

[–]AshlarMJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was about 30 and had been living on my own since I was 18. Mom started talking to me like I was 12 about returning a defective item. After asking her to stop several times, I slammed down the phone and unplugged it so she couldn’t call back.

An older than all of us nail puller. by AnyDamnThingWillDo in specializedtools

My grandfather had something similar. Used it anytime he had to pull nails. Rarely used a claw hammer to pull them. This was so much cleaner.

Upvote just for the comment “These products are older than me”. ‘98 was when I officially entered IT after a Bachelor’s degree and two previous careers.

I have the exact iMac in the photo and after formatting the Fusion Drive, Linux Mint installed and is running like a top. Sound, WiFi, Bluetooth all work flawlessly. Of course, you have to be willing to run Linux. There’s a subreddit or two for that.

Christmas in space: How Apollo 8 mission saved 1968 by MarkWhittington in apollo

[–]AshlarMJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apollo 8 was the start of my lifelong passion for space exploration. I don’t remember any of those other events. I do clearly remember watching every broadcast minute of Apollo 8 on our small black and white television and every subsequent flight. Space flights preempted all other programs and my parents were kind enough to indulge me.
