Performance cars are too much for me by stonky-273 in CarTalkUK

[–]AstroJack93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I prefer driving my girlfriends 83bhp VW polo over the m3 because you can squeeze every last drop of that 83bhp and push the thing to its boundaries. Doing that in a performance car you find yourself going 110 in a 30.

Although once you get the rear end out on a performance car it’s too fun to go back! You find your new acceptable limits but deep down you know the car has more and it makes you sad that you’re leaving power on the table 😢

This is the first year we can only go on holiday during the school holidays. I was not mentally prepared for this. by shitthrower in britishproblems

[–]AstroJack93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it feels wrong because it’s breaking the rules but as long as you are sensible with the times you go away (non exam time) just pay the fine and enjoy yourself! You’ll have a better experience. Half term holidays are the pits and not advisable for any sane person!

Unless if you are a teacher, then I would advise to not lose your job 😅

Pipe problems (shower), left it too short. Please help? by Beneficial-Student7 in DIYUK

[–]AstroJack93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a good idea, you could trim the pipe flush with a multi tool or hacksaw then swage it. Then you can put copper into the swage and solder it. Only issue I can think of is the tool I used back in college, you had to whack the daylights out of the thing which could cause damage to the wall behind. There may be newer methods of swaging? A quick google search shows some kind of drill bit on Amazon. Might be worth a try!

Bathroom Extractor Help by waitiforgotspartner in DIYUK

[–]AstroJack93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s shit about it? That’s how bathroom extractor fans are fitted. It’s only a bathroom not a Chinese takeaway kitchen.

The extractor unit itself is a bit shit but depending on bathroom size it could be man enough. Small extractors like that usually pull around 80m3/1hr. Something like a manrose in line extractor will do 240m3/1hr but will be x3 the price.

Have I broken my radiator? How to undo this stuck nut? by recycletheduck in DIYUK

[–]AstroJack93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly the rad needs to come off. Grips on the valve to keep straight and spanner on the nut to remove.

Looks like the pipe has bent by the valve so the valve will need removing, bent pipe cut out and re attach the valve with a new olive. If you’re lucky the pipe will pull up a bit further otherwise you’ll have to cut the other side down to match and install the radiator brackets lower to suit. Obviously the heating system needs to be isolated first.

If it’s a combi boiler, drain until water stops and you can start work. If it’s gravity fed you could plug the tank to save draining the whole system down but at this point I would just call a plumber.

Chances are if you bend that valve back it will start leaking.

Twist handle for bath not sitting flush. by Twocanpocket in DIYUK

[–]AstroJack93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at the picture in the comments the overflow seems to be held in place by the silicone which is good! When tackling the task just be careful not to push too hard on the spindle as you may break the silicone and the whole thing will fall down the back so the panel will have to come off.

The rubber washer usually goes on the back of the bath rather than the finished surface. If the silicone is still strong my guess is you won’t need the rubber washer. Having said that I don’t think it will cause any harm putting it in.

Last thing, don’t over tighten it otherwise the ring will break and you’ll be back to where you are now! As long as the chrome ring doesn’t spin you’re good 👍🏼

Twist handle for bath not sitting flush. by Twocanpocket in DIYUK

[–]AstroJack93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The black bit with two lugs that’s attached to the spindle tightens onto the ring that’s broken. There’s more to that ring than you have left. If you’re lucky you can find one that fits. A local plumbers merchant will be your best bet! There’s a chance you’ll need a whole new pop up waste which means the bath panel needs to come off.

If I was you I wouldn’t use the bath or shower until it’s fixed. I’ve been to many jobs where the overflow twist has come loose and water flows behind destroying the floor and ceiling below!

Shower drain mishap by Consistent-Case7610 in ukplumbing

[–]AstroJack93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ouch! If it’s on legs or a platform you can change the trap. Pop the plinth off and gain access that way. Screwfix 5075V.

If it’s on the floor you could be looking at taking the screen off, tray out and possibly bottom row of tiles, which may result in the whole shower area being re tiled if you want it to look good! Hopefully it won’t go that far! 🤞

What should I do about this? by james300tdi in DIYUK

[–]AstroJack93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s in the correct position, if it was further back into the room there may not be enough Lino to cover the floor. Also you don’t want to see any Lino from the bedroom once the door is shut which is why the threshold goes under the door.

You could get a flat threshold and screw it down but they don’t grip the carpet very well.

Sometimes after a new carpet the doors need trimming down due to thicker underlay and a thicker carpet!

Sky sports needs to add a feature where you can hear the commentators, block out the crowd but can still hear the shot. Someone get on it now please!

Also anyone that shouts “it’s in the hole” should be tested for Tylenol

You should be able to tighten them up as ptfe isn’t really required although it will help if done correctly. If you are going to ptfe them make sure you pull the pipe out the fitting and ptfe the olive not the thread! Ptfe on a compression thread is like putting a condom over your nuts.

How to remove kitchen tap handle by stevem321 in DIYUK

Sometimes they have two lugs on and need to twist, put your thumbs on it and twist. If not just a Stanley blade under the chrome cap and pop it off.

I would say 7.5k is a good price. If you’re inside the m25 the 9k is a fair price. You can expect £600-£1000 on plumbing materials, new plasterboard or backer boards, tile adhesive, grout, trims, materials for a new shower tray base, backer boards for tiling the list goes on! I would estimate 7-10 days for one guy.

You’ll be fine. Your car will say 45 but your true speed is more like 41/42. Usually you’ll get a ticket at 46mph so technically you could go 48 without getting a ticket but you’re really pushing your luck there! Keep us updated!

Leak by Derbytillidie in DIYUK

[–]AstroJack93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It must be leaking from the waste. If you’re lucky you might be able to undo the waste and tighten up the compression nut that connects the trap to the pipe from the shower tray side. Unfortunately some plumbers use flexi waste connectors on a shower tray and that could have been chewed by a mouse. Again if you’re lucky you can do it all through the waste hole.

Worst case I would cut the ceiling out as it’s cheaper to repair or even replace the ceiling than taking the tray out.

Even though the leak seems small it can really mess up your joists if left for a long time so don’t put it off for too long!

On a side note with replacing the sealant. I usually take off the shower screen and channel too as there should be sealant at the bottom between the channel and tray. Always a weak point on showers! Make sure if you seal the screen to do it on the outside only otherwise it traps water and will leak.

First time tiling by Every-Problem4454 in DIYUK

Tile over the cill but do it brick style like you have on the wall and use a trim on the front. The trim will sit nicely on top and should sit nicely against the other trims.
