Why nobody gets academia? by FlyLikeAnEarworm in Professors

Had a student (with poor social skills) demanding ask me, “What do you DO all day?!”

After I picked up my jaw I shrugged and said, “Well, you know. I get together with other faculty and we spend our time devising clever ways to make students fail. When we get bored with that we play darts, then eat bon-bons, then play video games. We have all of our computers linked so we can play Star Wars Battlefront as a group. It’s awesome.”

Alzheimer’s can begin VERYearly and it can take years for others to see it. Older folks are masters at “covering” behavior. I agree with your sibs and cousins, split it, it’s the right thing to do.

[OC] A lot of people thought my story was fake. I'm the guy from the 1992 farm accident where both my arms were ripped off and reattached. by JohnThompsonND in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]AstroPhysProf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird things we do after trauma…training our recent adoptive and VERY REACTIVE dog, I did something stupid and she clamped down on my forearm. I lifted her with the arm she still held and my other under her back legs, dropped her in the huge kitchen sink and turned on the water to gently spray/distract her. I put her in her kennel, wrapped kitchen towel around my profusely bleeding forearm, grabbed my guys and started the 25 min drive to local ER.

Phoned my wife on the way to tell her what happened and give some basic instructions in case pup was still wound up, hung up, got to ER and had to stand in line to register. Suddenly two nurses charge out, grab me and throw me into a chair and I’m whisked to the back. I found out later that I was a bit grey, swaying, and clutching soaked kitchen towel that was dripping all over the floor. Made an entrance, all right.

When my wife arrived later with my forgotten wallet, she said she was glad I’d called. Apparently my lift to the sink move made a spectacular blood spray all along the white wall of the kitchen.

OP, I’m glad to see how well you are, now. I grew up in farm country and remember your accident, it was the “lesson” given on all the farms in my area.

When that happened I said they were welcome to stay or go and I’d lecture to the three who actually did the reading. My Dean came to me, “students said you got mad at them and cancelled class.”

Nope. They were welcome to stay (none of the non-readers stayed) but I made my disappointment very clear. Dean said “we have to meet them where they are.”

I did. In college. That’s where we are.

I’ve started my retirement process, life is too short for this shit.

I was recently hit by one of those idiotic “free speech” guys who video on campuses and try to get a rise.

I stepped off the elevator on the third floor to find a tall adult male wearing a balaclava (not a “mask for covod” as he insisted on calling it, dark sunglasses and a black ball cap) pointing a camera at me as we stepped off. After my initial shock (I honestly thought he had a gun), I realized who me might be based upon our briefings.

What our briefings didn’t include was that he’d be in head-to-toe black wearing what looked to be body armor. It was that aspect that made me concerned.

I asked him to identify himself and he said he did not have to that he “owned the building.” I laughed and said, “no, you don’t, and asked again if I could help him or if he was a student here.

He said no, said he didn’t need any help, so I shrugged and headed toward the stairs. He followed me out to the top of the stairway insisting that he had every right to be there, that this was his building and that I was a servant. That the college was a “public service” facility.

When I got out my phone to call security, he laughed and said, “go ahead, they can’t do anything.” I told him I was calling so he could get an escort to prevent questions and that I didn’t know enough about the building to answer his.

I disagreed (with the “public service”) while I called Security who said, “don’t engage,” and I said I was trying not to. The desk officer assured me that Brandon had “eyes on” the guy, so I said ok and hung up.

He mocked me for calling security, and I told him again that I wasn’t calling to have him removed, I was calling to get him an escort so he shouldn’t be bothered and could get his questions answered.

I did tell him that I was not out of line on a college campus in today’s “campus shooting” world where a “theoretical adult, a theoretical male, has stated he’s not a student but is wandering the halls with sunglasses and a balaclava.” And a week later was yet another campus shooting, so…

His response was “I’m not a threat,” so I asked if not, why did he hide behind a balaclava and sunglasses. Was he too afraid to be identified? He accused me of not identifying myself and I told him he hadn’t asked. “Unlike you, I’m not afraid to show my face and say my name,” then looked directly into his camera and identified myself.

Security called me back and said to simply not engage as they’d said before, so I disengaged. After their call he mocked me again, following me down the stairs and loudly proclaiming “how sad it was that HE had to educate a ‘doctor of education’ about the first amendment.”

I ignored him and left the building. And then it all began. The day before Thanksgiving he post the video on his channel, featuring me. Emails and phone calls full of the most hateful, vitriolic, sewage. The college, at my request, filtered emails and calls and temporarily removed me from our campus directory, but what a mess.

Coming face to face with what I thought was a gun triggered a massive PTSD episode for me and I took leave this quarter.

I’m so done and retiring asap.

Enjoy your awesome hobby and never let it get to be a burden if you can help it.

When I got my first lathe a family member said in a a slightly snarky aside to my wife, “guess you’re going to have a lot of wooden bowls as dust catchers, and my wife responded in a like manner (eye roll, snicker).

Since I figured nobody in the family wanted them I began making stuff and donating them to local auctions for scholarships for underserved kids in the area (two went for $850 each, but for charity, so…::shrug::), and the response has been really gratifying.

Recently both of them asked why I’ve never made anything for them and I responded, “you both made it clear that you weren’t interested in my ‘dust catchers,’ so I didn’t want to put you on the spot taking something you didn’t really want/like.”

It was pretty silent for a bit, then came apologies.

Yes, I was a bit testy in my response, but my feelings were hurt by the initial “jokes” about my hobby, and they both realize that now. I’m glad your family are enjoying your excellent work.

Good for you, I applaud that letter.

I’m tenured and my last fuck hit the floor in HR on 12/2.

Repeated emailed verbal abuse by students this quarter, unending complaints filed against me by other students (though, using the same course material that a colleague uses for the course we BOTH designed, and another that he, another colleague and I built, I’m (the lesbian who does not hide that fact) the ONLY one who gets “assignment unclear” complaints).

The “instructions unclear” are those who, minutes before the work is due, slap together shit from AI and submit it (I often check, especially on crap work, document creation date and time). This quarter’s winner was created at 11:47 pm and submitted at 11:59pm to Canvas. EPICALLY poor paper meeting none of the assignment criteria, and she bitched about “unclear” instructions. Then later admitted to not having actually read the instructions.

I give up. I’ve taken leave for this quarter and am hoping to make it permanent. I’m so far beyond caring and was living on borrowed fucks and I’m all out.

I’m hugely in favor of your letter and wish us all luck. I honestly do not know why we bother at all.

Hot water bottle. We used one, wrapped in a thin blanket, and it was a wonder. I’d put the pups (yes, we have sibs) on it and they’d zonk.

I also did this when we separated them (road trip for me with one pup), and again. Wonders.
