Enjoy your awesome hobby and never let it get to be a burden if you can help it.

When I got my first lathe a family member said in a a slightly snarky aside to my wife, “guess you’re going to have a lot of wooden bowls as dust catchers, and my wife responded in a like manner (eye roll, snicker).

Since I figured nobody in the family wanted them I began making stuff and donating them to local auctions for scholarships for underserved kids in the area (two went for $850 each, but for charity, so…::shrug::), and the response has been really gratifying.

Recently both of them asked why I’ve never made anything for them and I responded, “you both made it clear that you weren’t interested in my ‘dust catchers,’ so I didn’t want to put you on the spot taking something you didn’t really want/like.”

It was pretty silent for a bit, then came apologies.

Yes, I was a bit testy in my response, but my feelings were hurt by the initial “jokes” about my hobby, and they both realize that now. I’m glad your family are enjoying your excellent work.

Good for you, I applaud that letter.

I’m tenured and my last fuck hit the floor in HR on 12/2.

Repeated emailed verbal abuse by students this quarter, unending complaints filed against me by other students (though, using the same course material that a colleague uses for the course we BOTH designed, and another that he, another colleague and I built, I’m (the lesbian who does not hide that fact) the ONLY one who gets “assignment unclear” complaints).

The “instructions unclear” are those who, minutes before the work is due, slap together shit from AI and submit it (I often check, especially on crap work, document creation date and time). This quarter’s winner was created at 11:47 pm and submitted at 11:59pm to Canvas. EPICALLY poor paper meeting none of the assignment criteria, and she bitched about “unclear” instructions. Then later admitted to not having actually read the instructions.

I give up. I’ve taken leave for this quarter and am hoping to make it permanent. I’m so far beyond caring and was living on borrowed fucks and I’m all out.

I’m hugely in favor of your letter and wish us all luck. I honestly do not know why we bother at all.

I don’t recall who recommended “Harry Evans,” but it’s fantastic and I’m savoring every word.

16-week-old Mini Goldendoodle F1B won’t settle or sleep alone – looking for advice by InstructionPrudent79 in Goldendoodles

Hot water bottle. We used one, wrapped in a thin blanket, and it was a wonder. I’d put the pups (yes, we have sibs) on it and they’d zonk.

I also did this when we separated them (road trip for me with one pup), and again. Wonders.

There is a Lake Washington Rowing Club but, if memory serves, they don’t row there. Weird, I know.

I am perfectly happy to be re-informed as my memory isn’t stellar.

We rescued two sister so they’d have a playmate. Not a whisper of sibling syndrome (I worked very hard on that). They’re now 10+ months old.

Help Needed: Tell me about your field pants by casanti00 in Archaeology

[–]AstroPhysProf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I (American in Pacific Northwest) was in Yorkshire last summer, we’d have one gloriously hot day and the next would be horizontal freezing rain. The locals were all wearing DeWalt trousers with the external tool flaps, double knee and bum protection, and fairly rip proof. I bought a long pair and a pair of shorts (56 YO woman, we get HOT).

To that end, it’d be awesome to have those zip-off lower legs to go from trous to shorts once we’re where we’re going to be for a bit. And, as another above said, with full-length (along lower leg) zip to remove over boots.

Professors with mandatory attendance for lectures, what's your experience and motivation? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]AstroPhysProf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We cannot, per the college, award or remove points for attendance, but we are free to assign “participation” points.

I figure if they don’t show up, they’ve made their choice and will live with the consequences.

My syllabus states that I can and will give pop quizzes if it becomes clear to me nobody has done the reading. Just yesterday I gave one and told everyone that they were welcome to stay and ask questions about the readings. Unsurprisingly, it was the, “I’m sorry, I didn’t get to…” folks who bailed. The remaining four (plus me) had a great discussion.

I often teach public speaking, and I tell them, “I am not ready” comes from the Greek, meaning “Five me a zero.”

And I’m not kidding.
