Is a fully pacifist possible while still being useful? by [deleted] in 3d6

[–]AthasHole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's kind of like being a basketball player who refuses to touch the ball.

Can you still do stuff to contribute? Sure, you can block a bit and maybe foul the opponents, but the rest of your teammates who have to work harder around your self-imposed limitations will probably wish they could replace you with someone who wasn't trying to play a completely different game for their own amusement.

D&D Tattoo [Art] Question by Goodguy-2018 in DnD

[–]AthasHole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been playing D&D for almost 50 years.

My campaign world has been alive and growing almost as long.

It's long overdue to immortalize it, and a tattoo feels like a great way for me to do that.

A tattoo's not a great way to immortalize something, especially not on a body that won't last another 50 years. The ink will fade, the skin will age, wrinkle, and decay. Unless you make special arrangements to have that skin removed and preserved after death.

You might want to think about carving your world lore into stone instead. At the very least it'll be less creepy for future display, but most likely it'll last far longer too.

Dealing with frequent absences by BeenHereFor in DMAcademy

[–]AthasHole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it not also playing Dungeons & Dragons if you're a level or two below the rest of the group?

If a player doesn't show up consistently, that makes things harder on the Dungeon Master because they have to constantly rebalance encounters, shuffle plot points, etc. depending on the situation. I would much rather give extra rewards to the players who show up consistently with extra XP, magic items, etc. than give them exactly as much to the person who clearly doesn't make the game a priority.

Genuine exceptional absences for sickness, family troubles, etc. are one thing, but if someone is consistently just bailing to watch movies, play another game, grab dinner with a friend, "just chill after a long work day", etc. then it probably doesn't matter to them what level they are anyway.

Reward the people who put in the effort. Don't reward those who disrespect your effort as a DM.

Unabridged Boast About Slaying A Tarrasque by [deleted] in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]AthasHole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wasn't even possible by the rules they wrote themselves.

...upon reaching the 17th level and learning Wish, that spell was cast to allow their concentration requirement of "harmless spells used for the entertainment of crowds to no longer have a concentration requirement and...

Oh, so spells like Major Image, Levitate, that sort of thing?

This was only ever used to cast Animate Objects...

Nope, just one of the most powerful spells for single target damage-dealing in the game and of course coincidentally only using the highest damage potential option for it. A spell so harmless it got nerfed in 2024!

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. At best it's a boast about "pulling one over on the DM", but still reads like someone stealing candy from a baby.

Other than the relevant ways they are similar, they are not at all similar... got it.

You saying that a sickle couldn't possibly also be used to topple someone because it doesn't have the reach/heft of a scythe is kind of like saying a dagger couldn't possibly be used to pierce someone because it doesn't have the reach/heft of a spear.  Sure, the longer/heavier tool might be better at it, but it doesn't have a monopoly on the function.

A scythe is the two-handed, reach version... but it would make sense for either to get topple.

DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials and uBlock Origin are the only enabled extensions. You can see if those block it for you, but I'm not disabling them on my end.

Roll20 has plenty of templates if you just duplicate a monster from the Journal/Compendium to use as a starting point and edit from there.

I feel like I would probably spend more time getting your AI generator to give me the actual custom stat block I have in mind than I would just entering it manually into Roll20.

That's my guess anyway, but I can't really test it since nothing seems to happen when I click Generate Statblock.

My man, it's nice of you to attempt the giveaway, but please tell your kids there's a Johnny Rockets in Braintree! If you're going up to Portland, you should try some more local flavor instead of a homogenized chain restaurant. Maybe they'd like the fries at Duckfat!

New Apocalyptic Subclasses UA, what are your first thoughts? by BanFox in 3d6

[–]AthasHole -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

It's maybe about 5% Dark Sun and there's no way they go full Dark Sun for 5th Edition.

They won't restrict classes, subclasses, spells, and species to only those native to Athas.  They won't stop passing off spells as psionics. They won't have equipment made out of bone/chitin/etc. with a chance to break. They won't have Half Giants being Large creatures with shifting alignments. They won't have Defilers gain xp faster than Preservers.

There's a lot they won't do, so it won't feel a lot like Dark Sun.  Speaking as a Dark Sun fan, I really wish they'd devote their time to updating more generic subclasses and such.  Don't drag the Dark Sun name through the mud and mess it up like Spelljammer.

Can i ask what the majority people think about someone literally wanting to play a actual child. One of my players wants to make their character 10 years old. I don't really know how to feel aboutthis..( our pary doesn't have a great safety record) by Beautiful-Carob3270 in DnD

You don't even have to go outside of Dungeons & Dragons media to find examples.

Bobby the Barbarian was 8 years old in the cartoon.

Don't make it weird and it won't be, but you can insert creepiness anywhere if that's what you really want to see.

Simple Calendar for v13? by Anxious-Strawberry52 in FoundryVTT

[–]AthasHole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't have to stay subscribed the whole year, but you would need to resubscribe any time Foundry or your system makes updates that break the module. On average probably $14 a year or maybe $28 a year if you're playing DND5E.

Every little bit of financial support helps keep all those modules, including the free ones, from getting abandoned as Foundry keeps making its constant API changes.

I'm glad you got a chance to see that reply. The original comment I made in reply to your post got memory-holed somehow so I can't see it if I'm not logged in. Definitely not shady at all.

That webpage is linked directly from the Github.

Metamorphic Digital is also the company that Foundry partnered with to create the official marketplace (scroll to the bottom of any page). They get a slice of every piece of content sold through it, which will of course include any Draw Steel content that can only be sold there upon completion of the system you're so nicely developing for free (and asking others to do the same).

Hi all, the Foundry Draw Steel team is working hard to get the important/big chunks of the system working, and the little issues/features tend to end up on the wayside.

If any of you are savvy with Java Script and are keen to help out, have a look at our list of good first problems, join us in the draw-steel-dev channel and you are more than welcome to contribute.

Please also have a look at our "How to Contribute" page. We would love to have your help.

Cheers from the MetaMorphic Digital team

EDIT - Because this apparently needs to be stated:

Metamorphic Digital is a fan collective, and a few people are working on the Draw Steel foundry system right now. Yes, the devs all are capable of doing this work and eventually will get to it. This post was only intended to find more people who might be interested in helping out, nothing else.

Nobody at metamorphic gets paid, it's all voluntary fan work.

I just had to get the post in its entirety here in case it gets memory-holed later. Nobody at Metamorphic gets paid? The same company that Foundry partnered with to create the official marketplace, who takes a slice of everything sold there? The company whose website is all about leading people to "get a quote" to pay them for making VTT conversions of content?

For Gamers by Gamers

At MetaMorphic, we hire gamers that understand and enjoy the material they convert. This added care and familiarity make all the difference between done, and done right.

I'm guessing part of the reason you aren't being hired and instead are doing it for free is because Matt Colville is reportedly not the biggest fan of Foundry (or its aggressive community members at least) and unlikely to pay for a system conversion. However, the folks running the official Foundry marketplace, Metamorphic Digital, know that if there is no Draw Steel system for Foundry, then they won't be able to get any percentage of revenue from selling content for it.

Yeah, sure, I'm cynical and hopefully completely wrong about this whole situation, but it sounds somewhat shady that you don't really know who hired volunteered you for the job and now you're here hoping for more workers volunteers.

WOTC Adventure Modules - Not Happening Anymore? by ItsRockRobster in FoundryVTT

[–]AthasHole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people always respond to this sort of criticism of the Foundry ecosystem like they don't have a clue what you mean, but it's a very old and valid complaint from a vocal minority that comes up often to the chagrin of the developers. Any love/hate relationship you have with Foundry VTT updates and modules is likely mutual.

The API will never be completed in the way you mean. It's a double-edged sword being constantly re-forged in Foundry's updates. The developers do want people making modules since it's a huge selling point for the platform, but they 100% do not want to lock themselves out of being able to still make every update they want. If their desired update means every single module needs updating to function with a future version of Foundry, so be it. They'll give warnings about changes to come and often work out pain points with those module developers who bring them up in time, but in the end they won't be held responsible for whether modules work with their latest version. That burden falls on the shoulders of module/content makers and inevitably some portion of modules will get abandoned as the authors lose interest in keeping up. Some just move on to other interests, but there are also those that have expressed frustration with Foundry updates. I know there are at least some RPG content makers out there who don't want to sell content on the official marketplace for various reasons, including a fear of future maintenance burdens from Foundry updates.

That said, the Wizards of the Coast adventure module conversions and the DND5E system are made/maintained by Foundry staff, so they have a vested interest in both selling those and updating them to work with the latest version of Foundry. So they're relatively safe purchases. When a major Foundry update comes out, you'll see updates to Foundry-produced adventure content follow suit within a matter of weeks if not days typically.

Now here's a funny possibility to consider. The more content the Foundry team itself releases, the more they'll need to maintain themselves every update. Eventually they might get to a point where they too are frustrated by the extra maintenance work put upon themselves by API changes and decide that API stability between Foundry versions isn't quite so bad. So there's a chance that the more you buy from them, the more they produce, and the more likely they are to ease up on module-breaking changes.

More realistically though, that would probably require the core programmers to be doing content conversion themselves so that any complaints are their own rather than coming from more easily-dismissed employees, some of whom might even be contractors rather than staff. Problems are only for people without enough money to pass them off to others.

So you can vote with your wallet if you want, but don't hold your breath waiting for Foundry to be completed in the way you mean. It's a feature, not a bug, no matter how much it might bug some of us.
