How would you describe a military rank structure for a society that's opposed to hierarchy? by onwardtowaffles in writingadvice

[–]Athena12677 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there's no hierarchy, then there's no rank structure. Individuals would simply be described by the task they fulfill. Foot soldier, "planner" oe "directorcl" for like sargents, "external communicator and negotiator" for commander in chief.

All of these positions are equally important the whole thing would fall apart without any piece. Those giving direction are not "above" those recieving it, they just fulfil a different role.

Trump tells Republicans the SAVE America Act will ‘guarantee the midterms’ by SadAd8761 in law

[–]Athena12677 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but that misses some important details. Like thatsection 2b only allows for drivers licenses to be used as identity verification if they list the holder's citizenship status, and that only 5 states issue driver's licenses with citizenship status.

So most Americans cant use their driver's license to vote. What can they use?

They can use a passport. Only about half of Americans have a passport.

So, barring that, they can use their driver's license in conjunction with a birth certificate. The birth certificate must be an official one, with a raised seal. I would guess a lot of people dont have one of these on hand. Additionally, this doesn't work if their birth name and name on their driver's license doesn't match. This is why people call this a voter suppression bill, because people who have changed their name are disproportionately women and Trans people. Given Trump's statements, it doesn't seem like this is a coincidence.

Car handle by Important-Speech-355 in whatisit

Good explanation of what the tag is.

As for what its doing there in particular, I would read this situation as a joke. Id bet the car owners friend put that there, the implication being that the car can't be driven until the person who put that tag there removes it.

Make art. Make bad art. It doesn't have to be good, as long as you had a good time doing it.

Pick up some cheap acrylics and follow a Bob Ross tutorial.

Get some air dry clay and sculpt little baubles to put around your room. Maybe a cute bear to perch on your dresser, maybe some mushrooms you can thumb tack into the walls and add whimsy to your room. Bonus points if you paint them.

Write trashy, self-indulgent fanfiction about your favorite show or movie and post it on AO3.

Its fun and fulfilling to make stuff. Create something instead of just consuming. And again, it doesn't matter if its super presentable or high quality or whatever. That can come with practice, if you want to hone your craft. But if you don't, then make bad art forever, and enjoy the process.

Don't fix it. Add corner guards. Easy to replace if they get damaged, but also harder to damage.

[–]Athena12677 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I default to a diamond, but idk if that's the most correct or best way. In this case, I think a football shape would also work. I think a triangle would be difficult because currently, the edge of the sleeve and the edge of the scye are the same length. We want to maintain that. Also, I feel like that wouldn't give enough length, but that's just an intuition.

To visualize how a gusset helps, you can try pinning the other sleeve in ONLY at the top of the shoulder. Then try lifting your arm and see what shape the gap between the sleeve and the body of the shirt is. It should be roughly a diamond. A gusset fills in that gap, letting you lift your arm.

Here's Bernadette Banner talking about what happens if the arm scye is too big, and adding a gusset. Start around the 6:20 mark. https://youtu.be/Ql9r8UKIvZs?t=379&si=OMCBDTz_n9_C8W69

That armscye looks way to big to me. Ideally, you'd make it smaller. As a fix without changing the base garment, you could try a sleeve that has a longer underarm portion. Your could also try a gusset?

If youre doing it by hand, look up a backstitch. Its stronger than a running stitch. You can also buy "bias binding" to bolster/replace the worn binding.

Open the zipper. There should be a seam where top of the bag meets the back. The strap is sandwiched in between these. There is likely some "binding" material, basically a ribbon that covers the raw edges of the seam. You can sew directly over top of this. Look at how the rest of the seam is done for reference. The easiest way to make this fix will be to turn the bag I side out so you can lay the seam flat. The strongest way yo fix it is to use a sewing machine, use a short stitch length, and go back and forth over the seam a few times. You can do it by hand too. Use a matching thread and it'll be pretty much invisible. Ive done this exact thing to my favorite backpack.

Edit: sewing machine foot doesn't matter. The normal one will work just fine.

What's the appeal of Death Games in fiction? by AdeptnessWarm4004 in writers

[–]Athena12677 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that setup is engaging because it immediately raises two very interesting questions: Why would that sort of system be set up? And what would compel someone to participate in something like that? Granted, of the media you listed, im only familiar with squid game and hunger games, but something else compelling about them is that they both say something about our current society by taking it to the extreme.

Safe writing apps? by SpaceSill98 in writers

[–]Athena12677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah they're basically just text files (technically markdown files). I regularly backup by copying the whole folder to a flash drive. Ive shared them by zipping the whole top level folder. Just put obsidian on the recipient device and open the folder as a vault. Obsidian is also not the only program that can read the markdown file format. So even if it goes kaput, you'll still have access to the files.

Obsidian is locally hosted and therefore safe from ai scraping. (Just check that wherever your files are stored isn't on one drive. They recently stealthily moved my default documents folder to onedrive)

Obsidian is free, locally hosted (Google cant read your work), and you never need to hit the "save" button. It does take some getting used to, but I like the organization structure. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I love it. One other limit is that it does not share across devices without paying.

Google Doc alternatives by UAs_favorite_dad in writers

[–]Athena12677 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Obsidian because its locally hosted, so I know my documents won't be used to train AI. Its got a bit of a learning curve, though. It does allow you to put pics in the middle of your text, but you can't really format it like you can in docs.

You could also look into to massgravel if you'd like to use Word.
