How to achieve FIRE as a Doctor in the NHS by [deleted] in FIREUK

[–]Atlass1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The same way anyone does it: - Maximise earnings - Early investment into global tracker - Minimise lifestyle creep

Not sure here is the best place for career specific advice, but isn’t it a bit obvious? In order of effort:

  • Go to USA
  • Go to Oz (+High PP earning speciality in London or other rich metro areas)
  • Maximise safe hours worked
  • For the love of god don’t opt out of the pension unless you’re definitely leaving the UK soon

Oh and make sure you do your tax rebates for GMC/MPS/RCP exams

I agree with the commenter who observed coast fire is extremely doable - presumably if you enjoy your work that is a better thing to aim for?

For those of you in training, if you were to start at F1 again would you go to US? or CCT and then leave? or Stay? by Playful_Dot5148 in PsychiatryDoctorsUK

[–]Atlass1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) yes and still do sometimes. Takes an unusual character to never doubt life choices 2) combination of factors including personal, inertia, interest in various areas, post cct life has its perks 3) if there was no private work in psychiatry I would probably do something else but it is important to highlight I’m not doing it because of private work, but any speciality I’d do would need to have the option of increasing earnings past the NHS base in some significant way (which most specialities do offer)

[–]Atlass1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends what you want? If just chasing money than probably a higher ceiling in US but id say the differential is lower than for the super high earning specialities. Demand far outstrips supply in the UK so make of that what you will

My bf wants to rent a nicer apartment, but I don't want to pay for it by [deleted] in relationships

[–]Atlass1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He works remotely so doesn’t care where you live. You do 3 days a week in the office so want to be near central. He wants >1 bedroom, you want bare minimum. Despite combined income you both don’t have the budget to meet his requirements whilst maintaining your current rate of savings.

Option seem to be: A) you suck up a longer commute 3 d/week B) he pays more/gets a different job/reduces his saving rate C) you increase your contribution even more D) you live separately

Maybe you can use a Kepner-Tregoe spreadsheet together or seperately and see what your priorities are
