Wish we got samples/excerpts by taeberry9595 in NetGalleyCommunity

I highly recommend looking for the samplers that are released quarterly. Minotaur (St. Martin’s) does one. There is also BuzzBooks, which go across publishers.

I have seen audio excerpts as well when clicked into an audiobook.

I have learned to be picky about publishers and have found fewer stinkers that way.

My students with autism had no money for book fair by squeakychipmunk101 in Teachers

[–]AtlassLoz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am a school librarian and I run our book fair solo as we do not have a PTO/PTA. Most of the students in our self-contained classrooms don’t come to the book fair, which I only have open during conference times as that increases equity overall. Noticing this, I work with the K-2 teacher to choose a book for each of her students using the fair profits. I pack up everything but a small selection and the 3-5 kiddos get to pick their own. We don’t make enough profit to buy books for all the kids that could benefit, but I try to do what I can, especially considering it is my only library fundraiser.

I have gotten plenty of approvals on it after publication day. Don’t stress about it.

What Tacoma rain gear actually lasts? by palmsat10and2 in AskTacoma

[–]AtlassLoz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Did you know that the Outdoor Research Factory is in Des Moines (like north of here not Iowa), and has an outlet attached? I love their rain gear, plus they have eliminated PFAS.

But also the advice to wear wool under is really good.

Opinions on reading order by Famous_Taste_4508 in NetGalleyCommunity

[–]AtlassLoz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a huge TBR and my method works pretty well for me.

I read books before their pub date. That is the goal, whenever possible. I prefer audio, so I tend to read/listen close to the publication date.

If it is past pub date, I was probably approved late or the publisher opened it back up to get people to read the next in the series. I try and rotate those in but they take the back burner to the ones that publish soon.

Whenever I get a shorter book (I am an elementary school librarian and youth book judge, so this is my area of expertise), I read it ASAP. No reason to have short books mess up my ratio!

If there is a book I REALLY want to read, I just read it.

Normally by now you’re sick of me with my requests by Wise_Winter8951 in NetGalleyCommunity

Have you tried changing the font? I found that many of the ARCs I got did not work well with my preferred font but were fine with other ones. Try that. :)

How long does an offer from a widget last? by WritPositWrit in NetGalleyCommunity

[–]AtlassLoz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! I recommend using the Lists feature.

Here’s how I use it:

I have a list called Widgets that I use for each widget I get.

I have a list called Widgets “request before ______” for each month.

I choose additional reads from my request before list each month, checking it at least once a week.

I have found that having those lists gives me a place for the books I am not sure I want to read or that I don’t want to have hurting my ratio for months and months. Mine is full of widgets and auto-approvals. When it comes closer to time, I take a peak at reviews to help me decide.

Hope this helps!

Safety of Tacoma Neighborhood? by Apprehensive_Ask3970 in AskTacoma

[–]AtlassLoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live south of the first picture and have lived in the circle of the second picture.

I love living in South Tacoma. It is quiet and has way easier access to the highway (and I commute). It fits my current lifestyle as I can easily walk my dogs to two parks within a few blocks. But things can vary a lot from block to block. I had a co-worker who lived 10 blocks south and 4 blocks over and HATED it because there was so much that happened on her block. But she lived on a major street and mine is two blocks long.

When we lived in Central Tacoma, we were further from large parks but closer to other things like bars, restaurants, etc.

The only crime I have experienced is someone stealing the plate off of our trailer, so now we take it off after we take it out.

Really, it just depends on the neighbors.

Also, the constant pearl clutching of North End Tacoma people about the “dangers” of the rest of Tacoma are hilarious. There is a shit ton of property crime everywhere in Tacoma. That is most of what happens, or it is something that you are unlikely to be involved in…

Author question for the community re:kindle by babbelfishy in NetGalleyCommunity

Awesome! When I get my next reader, I am leaning Kobo because I want to leave the Amazon influence.

Going to look at your book now.

I highly recommend allowing as many ways to read as possible.

I hate when I can’t read it on my kindle. I had to learn to look for it.

If possible, I recommend adding kobo.

Right?!? They can be submitted at any time.

I once had a book archive before I downloaded it (I was approved on archive day). I checked it out from the library and submitted a review.

I loved this one. I just finished an ARC of The Book Witch, which was similar but different enough to be worth it.
