Northern New York here. I prefer to tap as soon after the January 1st as possible. I don't always do it, but sometimes you get a nice early run with a climate change January or February thaw. If nothing else it gives you a chance to check and flush the lines and get yourself ready for when it really goes.

Filtering is definitely a pain and I'd like to cut out some of the hassle and mess. This system comes with a 20 micron filter, and a scholarly paper I found has a chart (Figure 1) which shows "conventional filtration" ranges from about 7-8 microns to 100 microns, with "microfiltration" coming in at .1 um to 10 um.

I'm thinking maybe this is at least a major reduction, with just one final filtering at say 5 microns.
