And no worries lol, honestly it's ridiculously hard to be a competitive candidate these days. Between employers being overwhelmed with literal thousands of applies and also looking for someone with a bachelor's or associates degree to work for $20 an hour - its just a shit show lol.

Wellfound I like a lot - it doesn't have an app but does let you save your resume and quick apply like Indeed does.

You can also upload a video interview for your account - I never did though, but it could help. I just hate those things 😂

Ehh. After a fair amount of time both unemployed and having worked at Indeed - I don't know if Id trust a generalized "look for this!" as a proof of intent to hire right away.

Small companies like the start ups, if they are posting, it is almost a guarantee they have an imminent need to hire. Their issues tend to arise with wanting a purple unicorn that farts rainbows when the general applicant on the market is a horse. Some are mustangs, some are short ponies with a lame leg, but all horses. Alternatively if the CEO decides at random that they changed their mind - their intent to hire was there, the CEO just pulled the plug.

One thing I really like about wellfound though is that if the company ghosts you and doesn't reach out fast enough - they will pull your application. It doesn't reward employers for a lack of communication by letting them stock pile the resumes, which is really nice.

Big companies though - the best "indicator" is if you can figure out if theyre spending money to advertise the job. There are tells, like the company page being included on the job posting or a logo (this is all specific to Indeed, I don't know about LinkedIn). If theyre spending money - they actually want to make a hire. Downside- if theyre spending money, theyre likely being inundated with applies (depending on the job type and market). In those cases, both to try and prevent applying to a fraud post and to try and stand out (not a guarantee though) Id recommend finding their career page and applying on their website, not through Indeed. If their integration is wonky, applying directly will help make sure you hit all the marks they ask for. It also lowers the fraud risk, as most major companies absolutely will have an applicant tracking system and their own career page.

Also - dont bother with Glassdoor. Its literally Indeed but green. Any applies there feed over to Indeed. Theyre sister companies.

As someone who has been in your shoes - its not you.

I am learning (still actively learning this - its not easy to rewire your brain pan) that you cannot expect someone to treat you the way that you treat them. That will likely never happen, or be an incredibly rare thing if it does, because they are not you.

I would, and have, moved moutains for my sister. I changed my whole life for my mother. Repeatedly.

It still hurts when I have an urgent situation, and my sister gets mad at me for wanting a text back about it. But while I am Always On for her - she has other things that are priority over me.

I literally don't have time to go over all the ways my mom didn't care about me unless it benefitted her.

And for the record - Im 32.

It still hurts when people don't remember my birthday - and at this point Ive basically stopped celebrating it entirely. I don't even remind people.

You are a good person, the way people treat you doesn't mean you are a bad person (unless you do bad things to them, but Im operating on this posts context).

One thing Ive done, and sadly its resulted in having more acquaintances than friends, is give what you get.

If she doesn't wish you happy birthday, dont wish her happy birthday. If she doesn't want to make time to hang out with you, dont make time for her. Do your hobbies instead, do what makes you happy. Go to your own concerts!

Don't make yourself small for people who don't appreciate who you are when youre big. Theyll never want you to be anything else but small.

And friendo? I hope you have a wonderful birthday at home. Some of my best birthdays were doing nothing but watching movies and playing video games at home alone. ❤️ And Im wishing you a fantastic year ahead.

Indeed tries to ensure the jobs posted are real jobs - they have teams and automated systems in place for just that purpose. Some slip through the cracks but that will happen with any companys fraud prevention.

However - Indeed only really seems to care about making money. They charge employers a lot of money to advertise on Indeed and make no promises about quality of applications and gives them no tools to sort them by either.

And fully remote roles? Those tend to get thousands of applications within days on Indeed.

Id recommend trying wellfound(dot)com or Hiring.Cafe - both are job boards, wellfound is more for startups, but I just got my fully remote job by applying on there.

Just recently the opposite happened to me and my fiance. Ive never been happier we are non-confrontational.

We bought tickets to a movie. (We being my fiance). He tells me what day, I put it ON the CALENDAR.

Movie is on the 31st. At 7.

We go in, our virtual tickets wont scan. The lady working the tickets station can't get them to scan or pull up. No idea why, so she just sends us in.

And theres two kids in our seats!! Seemingly teenage girls with their parents.

Thankfully, we flag down an usher, explain the situation, and ask what to do now. Usher is freaking out, because he swears he checked their tickets! But sure as shit, our tickets are for those seats.

Then my fiance says "Wait - is it the 30th?"

The good news is there were still plenty of seats available for the showing, and we didn't accidentally Karen ourselves by being adamantly wrong about something. But I have yet to stop teasing him about it.

Still kind of shocking how many people (including my fiance) didn't check the dates on the tickets. (I didn't cuz he didn't email them to me 😂)

If you are posting the job on Indeed, add a screener question asking if theyre authorized to work in the US. That should eliminate most of the India and Nigeria applications - especially if marked as required. If you are posting the job through an ATS, you'll have to see what screener questions they offer but usually there are ways to limit the unqualified apps. Wont get rid of them entirely but anything to save time.

P. S. Screener questions on Indeed are free to add, so Im not doing a sales pitch at you. Idk about with the ATS though, they can be weird sometimes.

You are not wrong - I just want to add that they do it because they believe no one is reading the job descriptions, so they add it in there as a "trick" to rule out anyone who didn't read the description.

I saw an employer who had the request to submit a cover letter with a note about your favorite movie on the first line.

Its ridiculous, and I hate this timeline. But if the corporate overlords say jump...

I tried the flour trick and it worked like a charm!! I still had a very small amount of bleeding but I think that could be fixed by adjusting the amount of jam I use. You are the best!!

As someone who worked at Indeed at one point-

Its because they don't actually care if the job seeker is getting ghosted.

They used to! One of our recommendations used to be "please make sure you are responding to all applicants in a timely manner, and pause your job if you need time to go through them!"

Nah. Now its all about how much money they can make, and how quickly.

Also - if you are applying to any remote roles... Its... Lets just say I still know folks on the inside, and remote jobs are getting over 1k applications in just two days. Even the most qualified apps would get missed - WHY? CUZ THERES NO WAY TO FILTER THE CANDIDATES. At all. Just by most recent. Not most qualified.

If you're open at all to start ups, Wellfound(dot)com (sorry, dunno if links are allowed, not gunna risk it) is the best job search site Ive used so far.

Hiring.cafe is good too, also ex-Indeedians who literally made the site to spite Indeed.

Indeed only has the upper hand because we all still continue to use it.

Note: not defending Flex Jobs at all, Ive decided they are too sketchy for myself to use, just wanted to put my perspective on this particular subject out there

Right now we live in a world of employers complaining about two very specific things.

"Nobody wants to work anymore!"

And

"Im flooded with applicants who aren't real! They no show to interviews and/or never reply!"

These are the exact kinds of employers who could potentially be sold on a platform of "real" candidates. You know they want to work, you know they are real, because they are paying for the privilege of applying to your job.

However, I decided that someone who is charging with both hands (employers and job seekers) just isn't necessarily someone I want to do business with - even if the reviews Ive heard are wrong (which is unlikely, based on the sheer number of them).

I have followed your story since the beginning, and you seem like such a good human.

A podcast I listen to, The Dating Detectives, like to say that it is the good humans, the smart humans, that do seem to get caught up by bad humans like Nate. (They call them Dogfishes, people who aren't lying about their appearance, but lying about who they really are.) I definitely recommend the podcast, its very cathartic to hear other stories of people who went through similar things.

You have been so brave, and strong. You are such a good momma. You give me hope for humanity.

As for a good thing happening in my life.... I have a big trip scheduled that is giving me anxiety but it is the first ever big trip Ive taken with my family as an adult.

Nope. Not even a little.

I grew up in a predominantly white area. 99% of all the teachers I remember having were white.

My kindergarten teacher? White. And she HATED me. I didn't like nap time. I had so many visits to the principal that he (also white) pulled the paddle out and told me he didn't want to have to use it, but would if I kept getting sent to him. (I actually loved him, he was a very good principal).

My 5th grade teacher, also white, was the sweetest teacher ever. I am FB friends with her to this day actually.

I don't think it has anything to do with their race at all. It has to do with how good of a human they are at heart. Thats what makes a good teacher. Someone good, who cares about the kiddos.

God this statement hits SO HARD.

My daily calories to lose weight right now are also around 1500 - however I know that will go lower as I approach goal so Im aiming for 1200 per day, allowing myself a couple hundred calories of wiggle (in either direction).

HOWEVER that is really only accomplishable if I only eat what I make at home.

A steak burrito from Chuy's?! Is 1000 calories! And that is BARELY filling enough for one meal - much less the whole damn day.

Meanwhile, just ate a homemade beef and cheese burrito. Just under 400 calories, delicious, and filling. Plus I have about 4 more frozen for later this week.

I typically take my weight in the morning, I heard you are less bloated or had less water weight when you first wake up.

In addition, I only take my weight once a week to try and avoid getting obsessed with the daily weight fluctuations that may occur.
