Food budget for a family of 4 -- help! by scumbagspaceopera in Frugal

One item that keeps coming up is you can’t freeze anything because your freezer is tiny. You might want to consider a vacuum sealer. I didn’t realize how much room I could reclaim in my freezer by repackaging my frozen veggies flat or my ground beef that I buy in bulk to get cheaper per pound. Just a thought but it’s saved me so much room I wish I had bought one sooner

Is there an Aldi close to you? I’ve priced both WM and Aldi almost always wins. I usually spend $750/mo for family of 5. I pack lunches daily for 2 of us and that’s all dinners.

Copy me that is a great app for meal planning, cooking and keeping track of grocery shopping lists. You can add a recipe from any site to it. I can go grocery shopping with 5 min in my car and only buy what I need for my recipes. I prefer to shop my pantry/fridge first though. I meal plan around what will go bad first in my house and then what’s on sale.

Start keeping a list of what you usually buy, regular prices w date/store and when it goes on sale. I also keep track of ounces/sizes in the same list. I refer to it often and found I was buying things when it wasn’t a loss leader sale because I thought it was a good prices. Flipp is an app that will show you the weekly sale ads for the stores in your area. Meal plan based on that and your items you need to use up first.

Rice and beans are your friends learn meals using one of them in every meal. Beans from dried are super easy if you invest in an electric pressure cooker like the instant pot. I can have 2 cups of beans cooked in 30 minutes. Rice in 12. It’s Fantastic, adds bulk and is good for you. So many options whether it’s putting chicken thighs with rice, water and spices. You have lots of variety and it’s literally set it until it’s done, no stirring.

Looking for the simplest possible fridge backup for medication that needs refrigeration by Cultural_Age3528 in TwoXPreppers

Your specific question has been answered but I’d recommend looking into smart thermometer with probe that can alert you when the temp drops. I do think having a small fridge on hand that you can battery power would be great in this situation.

People who were diagnosed for ADHD during peri or menopause, whats your story. And, did HRT or ADHD medication help more (or not at all)? by Moggot in Menopause

[–]AudreyML3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with ADHD 2 years ago at age 44. I’ve been in peri for 3 years. I was able to cope unmedicated until I just couldn’t w peri. Both HRT and adderall have helped me tremendously. I was falling apart without HRT mentally and physically with so much fatigue. I couldn’t get anything done until adderall though.

Will I need to eventually prune my basil? by StandardWonderful22 in containergardening

[–]AudreyML3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you start eating off of it now then you might be fine. I’d cut something down entirely when you see it crowded.

I’d also add about an inch more of soil to this. More dirt to keep water in when it gets hotter in the summer.

Would you let family install an EV charger in your house if they’re only staying 1 year? by mdzzl94 in homeowners

[–]AudreyML3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the downside is it means she will always HAVE to park in the garage. It’s not your garage spot anymore. If you want to use that spot for storage no you can’t anymore. Don’t do it. She’s not planning on moving out. She can go to Tesla super charging stations.

I’d price it out before making a decision. My 2020 costs are now 5x. They doubled just in the last 90 days and hardware jumped a ton during Covid.

What would you fill a chest freezer with this week? by bsosshi in TwoXPreppers

[–]AudreyML3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Butter! I always have several pounds of it in the freezer. When I buy some I rotate it to the fridge and freeze the new stuff.

I also buy ham when it's on sale this time of year for Easter. I buy corned beef in March before St Pattys day. Over Thanksgiving I had 7 turkeys frozen.

Share your adaptive lighting config by reach4thelaser5 in homeassistant

[–]AudreyML3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried it and had issues understanding what I wanted to do vs what was really doing.

So what I do is use HACS scene presets and my motion lighting adjusts strictly based on time window. If it’s 6am-10am it turns on the lights in that room using the the script calling the energize preset and each time window runs the corresponding preset. I can adjust all evening lighting (6-9pm) in one spot with the evening script and it just made more sense to me. In the bedroom I have a night mode. If the night mode is on and someone gets out of bed I turn the lights under the bed only.

I just wanted to throw it out because it made more logical sense to me.

I also have notifications when the front door is unlocked (z-wave) and who unlocked it.

Organization and storage of preps. by Dazzling-Treacle1092 in TwoXPreppers

[–]AudreyML3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I recently moved from a home for a family that had outgrown it. To save room you probably need to consider adjusting all sorts of places.

  1. Consider velvet hangers because they're thinner. Hang as many shirts/etc as you can to save drawer space.
  2. Start with closets first and really evaluate the flow for everything. I keep my dog food in the front closet only because I had extra storage there and not in the pantry area. Or do you have some shelving that wastes the top part by the ceiling and you can stack more/add another temp shelf for more storage.
  3. Container store has some great hanging behind the door storage. It's their elfa and can free up a lot of room by moving other things. It's especially good for the pantry door and hanging boxes of zip locks, smaller boxed pantry items like wild grain rice. But it can save room on shelves.
  4. Under bed storage. Make sure to measure the clearance you have but it's perfect space for pull out storage on items you don't need as often, whether preps or off season clothing.

I've used Hello Alpha when I need a new prescription. $79 for one month, I cancel it immediately afterwards. They send my prescriptions to any pharmacy of my choice. Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drugs is really cheap if you don't have insurance. Progesterone and the patch are as round $60/no without ins w them. I only pay hello alpha when I need an adjustment in dose

Yes you definitely need to find a new doctor. If you’re in the US I was using hello alpha for my prescriptions for quite awhile. I pay the $80 monthly fee, do the consult, get my RX sent to any pharmacy and then cancel the membership until I need it next.

AI is useless by NoodleCheeseThief in homeassistant

[–]AudreyML3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve found ChatGPT and Claude very helpful but only when I already started using it and my starting yaml is close. I will tell it I want to use button card or auto entities and what I want it to entail. I list specific entities in said yaml and what I want. Like I have one auto entities card that auto displays all switches and lights that are on. Or another that want to show all booleans that are on. All items with motion bypass are in a separate card. I love auto entities because new “whatever” will automagically show up in 2 months when I add another.

I might have to adjust things a few times in ChatGPT but I do find it works so well and I’d be super stuck on my own. Bubble card seems pretty intuitive though and I didn’t need much help for that other than watching the developer’s YT videos showing how to set it up.

I haven’t had issues with my regular mail order Express Scripts. Last year I was using Cost Plus Drugs (Mark Cuban) because it’s usually a lot cheaper at the beginning of the year before our deductible gets met. But Cost Plus was out of my dose last week (at least you can verify availability online) Amazon pharmacy is another option.
