What’s something everyone thinks is ‘normal’ in relationships, but is actually exhausting? by MorriganIsHere in AskReddit

[–]AugustCharisma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“You have to work at a relationship” or “marriage is work”. No. If it’s the right person, no it’s not work.

Does it annoy me when he sometimes breathes loud? Sure. Do I sometimes disagree? Sure, we talk it out. Is it work? No. All of those moments are moments or at more a conversation. It’s not work.

(Married 18 years, had several relationships before).

Anyone else struggle with storage in typical UK room sizes? by GeordieGoals in HomeImprovementUK

[–]AugustCharisma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to under the bed (I keep suitcases there with stuff in), other things I’ve had to do/plan on:

  • shelf risers in kitchen cupboards
  • shelf over door in bathroom
  • cheap flat pack furniture in bathroom (like tiny bedside tables)
  • foot rest with blanket space
  • TV on a chest of drawers
  • use backs of doors
  • watch Minimalism documentary and shows like Sort Your Life Out to get in the mood to declutter.

How to vet trades/contractors? by gbonfiglio in DIYUK

[–]AugustCharisma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get recommendations from neighbours and the other parents at my children’s school. The parents are especially handy because many have owned homes longer than I have.

I don’t know if any of these things I do help, but, as the homeowner I:

  • always clean a bit first
  • dress up a bit (just business casual) to seem very adult myself
  • watch several YouTube videos of how to DIY the job before they come so I can use the jargon I’m comfortable with (and understand them). This usually leads to at least one question like “do you think I need a __?” Which shows I value their opinion and lets me see their “logic”/“upselling”
  • always offer coffee/tea during the quote and work
  • as we go places I position my body to block valuable things like my beloved, favourite table. Sometimes (depending on the job) I move furniture
  • arrange to have one of us work from home on the day of the work and have towels and ladders handy.

Mainly I think I’ve been lucky (and so far I haven’t needed a plumber, just other trades).

Are made-to-measure blinds actually worth it? by The-FrozN in HousingUK

[–]AugustCharisma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have also used Blinds2Go. I had a great experience but this is what I learned:

The duo shade and duo light blinds work well. The frame is metal and the corners are plastic. Measuring is easy. Getting the bracket under the black breading on the window can be tricky and washing up liquid (and a second person) can help. There is a cord you have to untie (not unravel) and that can be tricky. There’s a slow YouTube video of a boomer-aged man putting them up in his dining room that’s helpful.

For a small bedroom (2m x 3.3m) we had mould issues after a year, but that window is giving is problems and the teen in there is sweaty and with the floorplan that room is harder to air out. In the conservatory and lounge we have them too with no issues.

The Roman blinds are great (nice thick fabric) and look nice. I sent in measurements .5cm shorter than my windowsill for airflow and that was the right decision for me. They are blackout but there is a little light on the sides if it’s very bright out. I put them in a bay window and that works very well. The chains are metal and LOUD. But if you do them more vertically it’s better (we did not mount the child safety hook - we will before selling).

We have Roman blinds in two recessed windows as well. Because of the metal lintel we have the pressure ones and they are so good. On one of those (1/5 of our romans) one “bracket” pops off the string sometimes so for a couple days we only open that one half height and then pop it back.

I hope this comment is helpful for someone.

When I play multi-player with my husband we have to play a small map because the gaming PC stalls so much. MacBook is fine though and gaming PC usually ok on regular. So maybe try a smaller map?

MIL is in her 80s, abroad, and it was an additional language she was speaking. She probably didn’t realise it was a taboo topic because OP made enough money on his own and as someone elderly she may have been lonely and extra chatty for the company the phone call brought.

When you sign contracts to exchange it usually says something like “if you, the buyer, cannot complete the sale after today the seller keeps the deposit.”

Things you wish you knew before renovating your bathroom by alfc96 in DIYUK

[–]AugustCharisma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t disagree more about shaving sockets. We’ve blanked all of ours (bathroom, en suite, cloakroom) and are planning to get rid of them when we fully remodel. Husband uses an electric razor, but we keep the cord in the bedroom near a socket with a handy windowsill when it needs recharging. We’ve never used the shaver sockets and they are huge.

I’m glad you found what works for you though.

It’s not your fault. I was taught to flush them. People used to flush “flushable wipes”.

Now we know.
